Some of the games with best character customization were from at least 5 years ago. Saints Row 2 has good customization, but not all games have total customization over your character. Like Oblivion. You only really have control over your characters face and skin color. Otherwise everyone is just as tall, they're all the same weight. I know this is a game from, like, what, three years ago, but it is still one of my favorite games. In the next TES I would like to see maybe a taller wood elf, of a buff redgaurd, or a fat argonian, or something except for just all these stupid generic charecters. This thread isn't just about that, it's about all character customization, and why I think it was better before.

I feel you. I dont think you appreciate how much time they would have to waste making unique things. And the more complex they make the character creator the less memory they will have to make the rest of the game. Im all for games with character creators and they are usually worth owning.

Phantasy Star Universe(ps2) has a wicked CC that lets you change height and body mass Soul Calibur 3 and MK:Armageddon dont let you change height or body mass but they have pretty good CC's. The sims of course.

Anyways my final point is that its just time consuming work and developers have dead lines. Im sure they would all love to have awesome super deep CC's but its just not realistic to expect it. The ones with really crappy CC's probably started to try and include one but then realized how much time they were wasting and that they needed to actually work on the rest of the game and had to water it down completely or finish it asap and just move on.

When this is turned into a game, only then will character customization be at its best:

Until then, we will have to suffer through using a set of stuff to make our characters instead of anything our imaginations can come up with. :(

I''m out of my leauge talking about this because I don't really know how it all works but here is my idea anyway.

What we need is a character creation engine. Like how ID make game engines which other companies then borrow to use for their game, this character creation engine is designed to work with all the popular engines and updates every so often. The game developers will of course make the changes, add their own polishes and skins to suite their game just like they do with the Sourse engine/Unreal engine ect.

The only games I can think of which have different builds is City of Heroes. You'd get changes in height, muscle build and a few other things. DC Universe will offer the same.

Character customization isn't a big focus of most game designers nor should it be.  Customization kind of goes against character background (KOTOR gave one's customizable character a background, but it was the same background irrespective of one's character and the gender of one's character didn't impact their love life).  The ability to chose a guy who looks like Bobo the Clown or Frankenstein on steroids is fun, but if it doesn't mean anything, then I don't get real excited about it.

Of course, not making choice meaningless would mean a certain flexibility in game design.  The best example I can think of is GTA: San Andreas, where the character's appearance impacts his abilities (a lean athletic guy doesn't hit as hard as a big, buff guy but he can outrun him, which is useful in a game where one does a lot of running from the cops). Another interesting thing about SA was the character's appearance wasn't something you chose at the start, but something that came about over time due to the lifestyle you had CJ lead.

Pfff if you want character background read a book. I guess custom characters should go hand and hand with player made decisions throughout the story. I dont want to play games where im just watching a story unfold thats what books/movies are for. Video games are for interacting with the story.

It makes a difference, in a game and in the internet, identedy is important, anonimity is the oposite, people will use the same names for passwards, logins, it speaks to there sense of self: Character names, used terms, many times in an online game, they will choose particular atire based on looks and not statistics.

IMO character costumization is very important to get me immerse into the story and basically the whole game. I have to be able to like my character otherwise I'll hate the game. I bought Oblivion but I never really played it because I didn't likeits character custumization.
