@turks: Good choice. I also started as a mage in the early quests. But the mage can be sometimes bothering in terms of defense and when facing faster enemies since the mage has a bit long of casting magic esp. if you get high damaging skills, it takes 5-8 seconds of enchanting before they release the skill. Though it has a good area of damage, it's actually a great class if you're planning to attack enemies in wide range simultaneously and sometimes their magic is uber2x OP. Base on my experience, when I reach level 40+, I did face a lot of stronger, faster enemies which I find it difficult sometimes esp. when you're in a dungeon, the areas are just so enclosed which is sometimes a bit of a disadvantage. Yes, other pawns might attack the stronger ones, but there's just a lot of enemies going frenzy towards you and sometimes Pawns will unable to protect you because they're busy fighting the other mobs. So actually it depends on your strategy, if your pawns are too high level, then that would be no problem but make it sure not to hire overpowered pawns since this will make the game too easy. I suggest you only hire 1 high leveled pawn to balance the difficulty of the game and that it would also give you a satisfying experience in killing the enemies.
In terms of shifting class/vocation, you might as well consider Mystic Knight and Magick Archer when you reach level 50+ since enemies at that level are way too powerful esp. if you come to face a bunch of dragons. If you want to retain the sorcerer, you can actually change your main pawn as the mage and build her/him to be the mage that you want. Have fun!
