I've never played a grand theft auto game before, but that is exactly why I don't want to. It's not that I can't handle graphic images, I've just gotten tired of every game I play centered around killing people. It's repetitive. I've recently stopped playing multiplayer, and trying to get into more single player games with a focus on other things. The walking dead, for example, has pretty violent scenes, but it serves a purpose as it tells a story. Im not against violence in videogames, it just has to have a reason for me.
That's just me though. I understand humans in general enjoy violence, but I think I've exhausted my pleasures with relentless killing on video screens, and instead want to play games that provide thought provoking stories and themes. Right now, for example, Im enjoying the game Nier. Although the gameplay does get repetitive from killing the same enemies over and over again, it feels like it has a purpose as you play a humble but strong father trying to protect his daughter and find a way to save her.
It's not violence, you're shooting at pixels. You should be able to tell the difference.I've never played a grand theft auto game before, but that is exactly why I don't want to. I feel like I've played other games this generation that have been far more violent than GTA is.
The title of this franchise is a felony. You should know what you're getting yourself into when you buy the game. It's "Grand Theft Auto 5", not "Give Everybody a Grouphug 5"
I think the violence is necessary in that it helps tell the story. Most of it being optional, in a sense. Franklin gets pinned down by a rival gang and kills to get out of it, where Michael kills those that's stolen from him. While you have the option to go in guns blazing, you also have the ability to pull off the first heist without really killing anyone. When you meet Trevor you quickly find he's a sadistic psycopath and the violence that goes with him helps display how insane he is.Â
Granted, I'm not that far into it, but it seems fairly fitting for the dark world Rockstar wants to create.
It is worth mentioning that I think GTAV should be rated AO though. The idea that GTAV is rated the same as games such as Halo or various fantasy games is ridiculous imo.
There were alot of times in the game where I found the violence disturbing... the torture mission in particular crossed that moral line for me and I really didn't like it or think it was necessary. And by the end of the game, I have to admit, I was alittle sick of random killings (especially shooting police officers). I know it's just a game but I dunno... it got old for me.
The problem with the gaming industry is its a relative young industry and what is happening now is the same thing that happened to Rock, Tv, Movies and other kinds of music at one point. Also people need to stop using the american red value system as a guide to what is and isent PC.
As to your other question is it needed? well its a GTA game and GTA is violent and controversial and asking for that to change is almost the same as expecting Call of Duty or Modern Warfare to stop being about war and soldiers.
Do you think Grand Theft Auto V is too violent or do you believe that the violence is genuinely necessary to provide a compelling experience? Davex360x
Well, if its too violent then dont play it. Its really that easy. Instead of injecting too much reality into it just remember its only a game.
A compelling experince? Not every game needs to be a compelling experince, nor do I want them all to be. Thats whats great about games. You can play a realistic sports game, you can play a goofy unrealistic one, you can play a puzzle game, adventure, action, shooter, dramatic, or a straight out ultra violent blood bath kind of game. They dont all need to be compelling with a strong narrative and concise juxtaposistion throughout in order to create a unforgetable experince.
So no I dont think its too violent, and if I did I wouldnt play it because Id rather play something else I enjoyed instead of putting a lot of my personal time and energy into trying to cross examine and deconstruct a video game. It really isnt even worth doing so because at the end of the day a video game is a static product that will be whatever it is and trying to figure it out or put psychology into is a exercise in futility.
Ill never understand why so many people put so much effort into focusing on things they dont like and worry that other people like it when they dont.
What else is there to talk about? GTA V is the biggest game released in 2013 by a huge margin so of course a lot threads and posts are going to be about that But just make a post if you want to talk about something else :)Are all these threads about GTAV too much?

[QUOTE="Bigboi500"]I've heard people complain about overly violent films like Hostel for yearsI said books. I'm familiar with the film criticisms, but not so much the censorship of books. For instance The Bible is much more violent than any GTA game.Do people bitch about the content in books too, or is it just video games that are supposed to contain strictly vanilla and politically correct content?

TC just got through playing the toture mission huh? :p
No I don't find Grand Theft Auto too violent since that's been the name of the game forever now. The only key difference that I've really started to notice is that wow, these games just appear so realistic now. Â With GTA V I feel like I'm living out these people's lives, as if its an actual simulation. Â Rockstar has gotten it down that greatly. Â It really makes the killings seem a lot more personal now, since the graphics and engine enables me to experience an extremely vivid world. Â And that's the first time I can ever say that in all my years of gaming. Â It's amazing the lines gaming is crossing and its only getting better. Â Rockstar releasing this game as the final blockbuster for current consoles just gets me excited for what's on the horizon for next gen.
