They take place in the same universe. Aperture Science competes with Black Mesa for government funding, but they rarely get it.
Portal talks about Black Mesa at one point, but HL2 Ep. 2 talks about an Aperture Science ship as well. Where it happens on the timeline is uncertain, but it's likely sometime between HL1 and 2.They take place in the same universe. You can find some company history on Aperture's website. Assuming it's a legitmate history and not just a joke, I think I can understand why the government may be wary of giving them funding.

Actually, it is probably before the first Half-Life. In HL2, they explain that after the first game, the human race surrendered to the Combine in just seven hours. And since most of the people in 2 at least sorta know about Glados and everything, I have to assume it was set a bit before society collapses after HL1.
It's not really a big issue though. All you have to know is that they are in the same universe, and that the events of Portal will tie into Episode 3 when that comes out in 2 years.
Apeture Science and Black Mesa were competing with each other to create teleportation technology. So yes, they are related to each other.
yeah. they both take place in the same universe. in HL2EP2, kleiner makes a reference to apeture science center. and in Portal, you can find a few references to Black Mesa (the logo pops up in a couple places). we just dont know where exactly it fits in with the Half-life universe. I tend to think it takes place between HL1 and HL2, maybe during or around the seven hour war.
Black Mesa, and Aperture are both science facilities that sorta compete with eachother.
Also, in Episode 2 you will notice the ship in the screens is an Aperture science ship that holds some sort of cargo that Gordon is going to most likely have to find in Episode 3.
Same universe, probably the same timeline as the original Half Life (both companies have new weapon ideas in each one, but Portal doesn't take place on an Earth overrun by combine just as the original Half Life didn't take place then either.). I wouldn't be surprised at all to see the Portal gun used in Episode 3.
