Yeah, the wooden delivery of most of the lines of dialog in Shenmue had us wondering if the English voice staff were actually native English speakers. While in Shenmue it was laughable, it was downright painful in the Xbox version of Shenmue II. If you play Shenmue 2, try to get your hands on the UK version for the DC. It has English subtitles with Japanese voices and is a much better version than the Xbox version.

Is it just you? Not at all. The Shenmue games have the worst voice acting in all of videogamedom. Not even the first RE's voicework is that bad.JustPlainLucas
I'd say that the origina RE1 still outdoes Shenmue. Also, Robot Alchemic Drive has the absolutely worst voice acting of any game ever.
Watch that whole vid to get an idea of what I'm talking about. The newscaster is freakin' hilarious. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AnRX94tkQRw

"Do you know where I can find some sailors?"
It's amazing how much that game rocked given how bad the acting was.Â

Well thats the problem isn't it how do you act out such stupid lines. Thought the entire script was homoerotic with the saliors and anyone remember the tatoo artist *shudder*
It's just you. Shenmue is well regarded among actors everywhere as a masterpiece of the theatrical arts.
Yeah, I agree. The acting was so bad it was funny, preventing me from taking the game seriously, but I still found myself absorbed into the two games.
I remember one part where some gang member throws a watermelon at Ryo's face, screaming "Die"! I was still adjusting to the xbox controller so I constantly missed that ATE, but I always cracked up during that moment.Â
I found it to be part of the game's charm.MacaroniMoses
I did too for the first volume, but by the second volume I found the voice acting to actually start to detract from the story. The voice actress for Joy was especially bad. I'm very, very glad that the first time I played Shenmue II it was the UK Dreamcast version. I spent literally an hour working on hex editing my clear save from Shenmue I so that I could use it on the UK version, but it was totally worth it.

BWAHAHAHAHA, that was great! It's like a bunch of Japanese dudes just practised a weak Drama presentation on their lunch breaks!
To me, the voice acting for Shenmue always fell under its so bad that its good category.Kreatzion
Agreed...such a brilliant game.
"Hey boy! Do you want to play a game?!"
"....I'll play!"Â

LOL, one of the best quotes ever. I found Shenmue much better than the sequel. At least you got to fight more often.

That was hilarious. It might even be worse than Elebits:

Yes, Yes it does! But it can easily be forgiven because of its fantastic story and game mechanics.daytona_178No, it was a hard hairball to swallow. It just sucked as in it sucked. Probably the most laghable part of acting I've heard so far was when you're in the arcade. When you get done playing that shooting game (to the right of the boxing game) the cashier guy goes "You're good!" (badly acted), then your guys goes "No it's easy!". I know it was a few words but it was just so blunt and stupid!
