Is it worth it to buy a slim PS2 now (new $99 or used at $50)? I have like 20 ps2 games and an old fatty PS2 that is acting up so I am considering getting a slim ps2 (preferably the half glossy newest one with no power brick). I know they aren't gonna be making new ps2 games anymore but I would play some of my old games like Resident Evil 4 again if it is possible on hdtv. However, I am gonna get rid of a CRT television for a 40 inch hdtv and I question the slim ps2 ability to play on hdtv. I plugged in my fat ps2 with burnout:takedown into my 46" lcd and it was unplayable with composite cable... Way too blurry! I know it suppose to help a little if I were to use component a/v cable and set the game to 480p by holding triangle and x during startup. I'll try that next time if I get a component a/v cable. I would hate to buy a slim ps2 for $99 and not be able to use it because I will have 2 HDTVs. How is the overall ps2 picture quality on HDTVs? I know lot of ps2 games do support 480p and 16:9 which helps.

So is the slim ps2 worth the money nowadays especially if I only have 2 HDTVs? Do you believe that the ps3 will eventually come with a download program that makes it backward compatable soon? I thought of that too but I also believe BC may have been part of the YLOD problem.

*** I stopped at walmart and they had no ps2s left. Walmart employee was surprised when I asked him if he had any PS2s. haha! "You want a PS... 2?!" I stopped at a couple gamestops and none of them had any of the used model-90000 slim ps2s. GameStop employees looked surprised as I asked for PS2. "This guy is like 10 years behind." haha. I notice that they don't even advertise the ps2 anymore in their stores.

Yeah, I think it's STILL worth getting a PS2, considering PS3's can't play PS2 games anymore.

It's still worth getting a Ps2 period. So many good game. Even with current-gen consoles, I still play my Ps2 quite regularly.

Although you might be having trouble trying to locate a new PS2, I suggest trying Bestbuy if you have any of those stores around where you live. Every time I go to Bestbuy they usually have new PS2's. I think they're one of the few places that still sells new ones actually. But yes, it is definitely worth your time to get a ps2 slim, but I can't give you any info with regards to the hdtv thing as I am not educated with stuff like that.:P

For sure. I re-purchased a PS2 a few months ago, and I'm very, very glad I did.

I'm not concerned about the quality and quantity of PS2 games as I feel that I would still get use out of my PS2 games. I have a nice collection of great PS2 games and I still see a lot of pretty good games at gamestop selling for like $3-5. My only concern is that I don't know about the PS2 picture quality on a large 40-46" samsung lcd (HDTV). Do you all play PS2 games on large lcd (HDTV)? And if so, are you happy enough with the picture quality on an hdtv?

I don't because not a lot of games really support progressive scan and those that don't look really bad on an HDTV. I do all of my Ps2 gaming on a 19" Philips CRT and its looks great.

Depends what you consider "worthy". You might wanna try out the PC emulator which can render the games at very high resoultions in superior picture quality.

I play my PS2 on a 32" HD Sony Bravia and the picture quality is pretty good, I think it's better on a CRT TV but it's decent enough on a HDTV.

Tough decision.... Maybe I'll just keep my 27" CRT, eye sore of a television for a little longer. Save me $600 LCD money for a little while. The CRT picture quality is pretty good to me. However, I can see Playstation Network store start selling my PS2 games for like $10-15 each and put HD in the title like God of War HD. Sony has a nice little business strategy by pulling backward compatability out of PS3, charge $100 for slim PS2 (it has been $100 for 2 years already), re-sell old PS/PS2 games on PSN for like $10-15 and possibly sell backward compatibility program for PS3 in the future. Then $ony tells us that it was to "cut cost" and the people didn't care for BC anymore. MORE LIKE INCREASING YOUR PROFITABILITY BY ANY MEANS! Well I refuse to re-buy digital copies of my PS2 games from PSN store that I already have and I refuse to let my PS2 collection turn into coasters so I will most likely buy a slim PS2 and component A/V cables to try out on my 46" hdtv lcd.

PS2 is the greatest gaming system ever and has the best collection of games. If getting a slim PS2 look atrocious on HDTV and means sticking with the tube TV so be it.

I thought about going with a smaller LCD like a 32" over 40" because I think the PS2 picture would show up better. It is for a bedroom TV and whatever to save some bucks as well. Right now, I think that I will just keep the CRT TV and get a slim PS2. And then cross my fingers and hope my slim PS2 would look pretty decent when I do get a 32-40" LCD in the future.

Get it. And people above that posted that it looks better on CRT are right. I play god of war on my bedroom tv, and when i go to my friends house who has the god of war collection on his ps3 with a 42 inch 1080p lcd tv, my graphics look clearer and shinier than his. The color is horrible on his and it looks like a 2d drawing.

If you spring for component cables, the PS2 doesn't look awful on an HDTV, but it ain't exactly pretty either. Especially older games.

There is a long list of ps2 with HD support on wikipedia. Some games look much better than others when it comes to HDTV. Im gonna keep my tube tv for a little while.

I bought a slim ps2 (scph-90001 CB) from best buy. I used my $90 reward zone certificate so I only had to pay $10.85 total. I didn't know that I didn't have to pay tax on the $90 which is nice. I'm gonna try it out on my tube TV until I get my component A/V cable from ebay or amazon. Anybody want a fatty ps2 that actually plays but you have to constantly tap on for the game to read? HAHA. My fatty PS2 has lots of trouble reading Burnout 3: Takedown but it reads my fighting games pretty well. I opened my old fatty ps2, cleaned the lens with alcohol, re-adjusted the little spindle rotor and the fatty ps2 still makes all those grinding sounds where I have to constantly tap/bang on it....... R.I.P. Fatty.

Of course after I bought my new slim PS2, I took out my old Fatty PS2 and took it apart in order to try to fix it for the last time. My past attempts failed as I cleaned the lens, greased the 2 rods and rotated some white "spindle" a notch. I checked youtube and I found a new technique to try to fix the grinding sound. I bent a white piece of plastic that was touching the "spinning rod". That connected it better and now the lens can easily move up and down nice and smoothly. I also took out the lens and cleaned both the outside and the inside lens with alcohol on a cotton swab. It worked and now it works just as good as new so far. Now I got 2 working PS2... A fatty and a slim. At first I thought about keeping both of them because I really like the size of the slim PS2 but I am gonna return the slim PS2.... I can spend $100 on games or put it towards an LCD.

PS2 RULES!

PS..... And the youtube video that helped me fix my nearly 10 year old fatty PS2 was labeled. "ps2 repair video - grinding video or no disc read"..... If you have any problems with your ps2, you should check out that vid as it helped me big time.

Sure is plus PS2 is inexpensive to buy. The final PS2 games are released in 2011 (mostly sports) NHL madden etc. But the library of PS2 games is close to 7000. It is worth it.

I think it is worth it, there are so many great games available for it that will keep you busy for months. Prices for games are also getting lower, it is the perfect time to get a big batch of games before they become difficult to find in stores.

I just recently purchased a ps2 for this reason. We've spent over $150 on ps2 games in the past week just so I can have my old favs before they become hard to find.

The PS2 is as classic as the NES is...so yes..buy a few of them for collecting. In 20 years they will bring "in mint condition" probably 1000$ or so..If I had the money I would buy them up..

I'd say it's worth it to buy a slim PS2, especially if you've never owned a PS2 before. The system has immense staying power, and you can find a horde of used PS2 games at Gamestop.

I'd buy it new, and stay away from used or refurbish. And I don't know why you're have a tough time finding a place that sells them....

Bestbuy

Amazon

Gamestop

BTW: if some gamestop employee ridiculed me with that comment, I would have made him regret saying that to me.... "This guy is 10 years behind the times?" What did you just say? Now, I want to speak to your manager and want you to give me the number for corporate. ...jerk....

I never got a new slim ps2 because I fixed my old fatty. I tried my old fatty ps2 with composite on my 46" samsung lcd and it looked terrible. So blurry and pretty much unplayable. Burnout 3 takedown was really atrocious especially with all the speed. I ordered a cheap component a/v cable and I am shocked on how it looks so amazing now. Burnout 3 takedown which was unplayable with composite... now it looks amazing with component. Bright, crisp images even with super speed of the game. Burnout 3 does 480p and does 16:9 so it looked really nice. Tekken 5 is another great looking game on hdtv that does 480p and 16:9. Tried 6 games and I was very impressed with picture quality. I may just buy some old cheap ps2 games now. I am using large 46" lcd so I would think the ps2 with component would look even more crisper on smaller 32-40" hdtv screen. Now I can chuck out my tube TV and composite a/v cable.

Everybody with a ps2 should definitely use component a/v cable with their HDTV.... Huge difference compared to composite a/v cable. I bought my component a/v cable on amazon for like $4 with free shipping.

I don't think the PS3 came with component cables. My 120gb slim PS3 only came with a composite cable. I provided an hdmi cable.

If you could spare alittle bit more money, 150$ or 200$ if your lucky. Get a 20gig or 60gig ps3!! From where the ps2 had a pretty bad analog output, having a ps3 that outputs in upscaled 1080p, smoothed out, and true digital REALLY makes a big difference. I have an older ps2, but it hasn't been turned on in years. Let me tell you though, the first gen ps3s are LOUD and power HUNGRY!

Yeah, I purchased the component cables for my PS2, and my Cube, but it hasn't really made a huge difference. I think the older consoles are best served playing them in their retro environment, like with the CRTs. I plan on doing just that with my SAturn,Genesis,Turbo 16, and N64 once I finish my Game room. But I agree with AcidSoldner.
