I went over to a friend's house the other day, and he's a retro gamer/collector like me, so we share the same interests.

I looked around his room, and he had a Sega Saturn sitting on top of his desk. I asked "Are Sega Saturns any good as far as good games go?"

He said, "Yeah, it's not the most popular system, but you can find some good games out there for it."

Now, I'm more familiar with older consoles, so instead of pretending to know what I'm talking about, I'll be honest. I have no idea what games are on the Sega Saturn. And that's why I'm wondering if it's a good investment.

If you say Yes, please tell me some good games that are worth getting if I buy one.

Thanks,

mamagod

the sega saturn games are really expensive cus all of them are very rare but some of them like Shining Force III and Dragon Force are worth getting. And there are other more obscure but you know, you'll need lots of money to spend.

wrong, the majority of Saturn games are actually pretty affordable, and some of them are dirt cheap. here is a list of games I would recommend which are cheap , and all of them were released in the west (either US or PAL)

Virtua Fighter 2

Sega Rally Daytona USA (or championship edition)

Fighters Megamix

Virtua Cop (best with lightgun) Virtua Cop 2 (best with lightgun)

Last Bronx

Astal (US only)

Rayman

Soviet Strike

Virtual On Cybertroopers

Manx TT Superbike

Street Fighter Alpha 2 (better then the PS1 and SNES versions)

Tomb Raider

Quake

Resident Evil (I heard its a bit rare in the US , but here in Europe its very cheap)

Die Hard Arcade

Winter Heat

Nights into dreams (cheap on its own, with the special controller its going to cost a little more)

all of these games are cheap (some like Virtua Fighter 2 cost about £2 here (about 3.50 dollars) ) and were all released in the west. that said the Saturn is at its best when you import, but its quite easy to import for the Saturn.

the only expensive games for the system are mostly some RPGs like Panzer Dragoon Saga, and even then, you can get the vastly cheaper Japanese version (there is a translation guide online).

Here's the problem with the Saturn imo. There are 2 types of games. 1. Games that are cheap but are done better on at least one other console/PC. Examples from above: Quake, Tomb Raider, Rayman. The list goes on and on... NBA Jam, Myst, Road Rash, etc. 2. Awesome exclusives that run WAY too much money. A lot of the good Saturn only games are in the $50-$150 dollar range. Which, while they may be good, imo I would never spend that kind of cash on a game from that era. I have about 60 Saturn games, which is more than I have for a few systems I own, but hands down, I play the Saturn the least, and always have. Most likely always will. To me, when you can go get a Dreamcast for around $30-$40 bucks and TONS of awesome games under $10, that is a deal. Same for N64, PS1, which are all in that timeframe. Now, if you see one at a flea market for like ten bucks, yeah grab it, but if you go spend $40 and try to buy some cheap games I think you will be let down.

the majority of games I mentioned are not on other systems, and running old PC games is complete pain thanks to compatibility issues. and Rayman is better on Saturn then it is on PS1, as is SFA 2

There are some great exclusives that like mentioned will cost alot and there are better versions of games that will cost a bit too. There are some cool games though that can be bought cheap and are fun if you haven't played them on PC or PS1. I slowly collect Shooters and fighters for mine and every now and then I pick up something unique. Well worth getting a cartridge to play imports as well.

I would say its really only worth it if you speak Japanese and want to pick up a Japanese saturn. There are some good games for it, but the limited library isn't going to be worth the $100s you could spend on it.

lol. that was my first thought. But honestly I dont think a Saturn is worth investing much money into. If you already have a PS1 and an N64, you'll find systems like the Saturn and 3do as horribly inferior. However there are a few games that are exclusive to Saturn and 3DO that might make them worth it for you. If I someday get a house with a room devoted to ONLY games, then yeah I might get a cheap used saturn for a few of the games I would play (Virtua cop, Virtua fighter, Daytona Usa, Virtua Racing, and a few others) but the saturn was a failed system for a reason. If SEGA had just NOT made the 32x and Saturn, then they would have been much more successfull with the Dreamcast.

so youre basing the quality of the Saturn's library based on its performance in the marketplace? in that case the dreamcast is also a terrible system, since it crashed just as badly as the Saturn did, and I assume the Gamecube and Xbox are also terrible, since they didn't have anywhere near the sales of the PS2?

I don't know a single word in Japanese, most games that are worth importing for the average western gamer, do not require any knowledge of Japanese, since most of these are fighting games and various shooters. the RPGs on the other hand would require a knowledge of Japanese or a translation guide of some sort (which exist)

Come on man who's gonna throw money on a Saturn for Tomb Raider or Resident Evil when games like that perform better on the PS1 and are easier to find... If you buy a Saturn it's for the rare games like Shining Force III, Burning Rangers, some 2D fighters and Shoot 'EmUp like Hyper Duel or DonPachi.

considering only 2 of these games prescribe to that clain , its wrong to claim that list is not good, Rayman is a bit better on Saturn (Ive actually got both versions), and Soviet Strike got a conversion on par with the PS1 version.

Quake is obviously better on the PC, but like all older PC games, there may be various compatibility issues with newer operating systems, pretty much every game designed for win95 ive tried running on Windows 7 doesnt work at all, or has various issues with the graphics.

the majority of the games I menitoned are Saturn exclusive as far as consoles are concenred.

when you buy a system , you have to identify what is its strongest point for you , and does it appeal to you.

to me , the Saturn is at its strongest at playing arcade games and fighting games, as well as a decent library of platformers, and a few RPGs too.

the guy asked if its worth owning a Saturn , and I simply mentioned some games which were released in the west , and can be found for a reasonable price.

claiming the Saturn is good for shining force 3 only, is like saying the PS1 is only good for Lunar 2 Eternal Blue, its a great game, but its expensive , and not the first game I would recommend.

the correct thing to do would be to get the system , along with some of the more reasonably priced games for it, if he likes it, he can get more games for it, if not, he can sell it, with little to no money lost.

Totally worth it for the Saturn. But expect that it's harder to get games for a Saturn. It's not like Atari 2600, NES, SNES, Genesis, and games like that. There aren't 1000s of Saturn games at every video game outlet. And especially the RPGs are pricey and hard to find. But there are still quite a few common games that are fun: -Area 51 -Clockwork Knight -Darius Gaiden -Daytona Racing USA -Doom -Marvel Super-Heroes -Panzer Dragoon & PD: Zwei -Quake -Resident Evil -Sonic 3D Blast -Tomb Raider -Virtua Fighter Remix -Virtua Cop 1 & 2 -WWF: Wrestlemania: The Arcade Game -X-Men: Children of the Atom

Saturn games can get quite pricy. I've been looking to buy one, but the cost of some of the games is pushing me away a bit.

Do you own a vault of Sega Saturns somewhere? Face it, it's just not that good of a system except in your OPINION. Mostly everyone else disagrees with that OPINION though.

IMO unless you are into fighters and shooters don't bother. Majority of the other titles have been ported over or remade on other platforms.

exactly , I didnt tell him to buy it, I said my opinion, and am entitled to give my opinion on the matter, just like anybody else, though the fact is, that in my opinion , most of the reasons people are giving are wrong, they are free to disagree. the guy was asking if he should get a saturn , I never told him to get it, I told him those claims to most games being expensive , are mostly false, and make me wonder if most people actually looked (Im not sure about the US , but here most Saturn games are not expensive at all ). what I also said was that in my opinion the Saturn is at its strongest, when playing Arcade games and fighting games, as well as a decent amount of platformers and some RPGs. what he has to do , is decide wether he likes these genres and base his decision on how much enjoyment he gets out oit it. he didn't ask if Saturn games are expensive, he asked if the Saturn is a good system and a good investment. I think my answer is more helpful to him then just saying "don't bother , the system sucks cause its too expensive" , which i seem to see alot.

^ I agree with him. Saturn is worth it. It's only like $50 to get a Saturn. And all the Saturn games are not expensive, only the rare ones are like any other system. I already gave a list of plenty of great common Saturn games farther up the thread. However, there are 1000s of them everywhere like NES, Genesis, or PS2. You may have to go through Ebay or Amazon to get them. I personally have a collection of about 10 games and I didn't pay more than $15 for any of them (well, except Nights Into Dreams, I did pay $20 for that one): -Clockwork Knight -Daytona Racing USA -Nights Into Dreams -Panzer Dragoon -Shinobi Legions -Sonic 3D Blast -Thunderstrike -Tomb Raider -Virtua Cop -Virtua Cop 2 -WWF: Wrestlemania: The Arcade Game

all the games ive seen go from 9.99 and up so ya their a bit pricey compared to nes snes etc but are no where near the cost of this gens games!
