the psp 2 is going to bomb because of the ipod touch and 3ds taking 90% of the market. so yes invest in a ps1 but its better if you invest in a ps2 because you get triple the library ps1, ps2 combined. want HD ps1 games? get a ps3

Well yeah, JRPGs on PSX seem to be very expensive. If that's your game genre of preference, it might be better to looking into PS2, which does play PSX games anyways if you wanted to throw down the money on them.

However, if you can live without some of the more well-known JRPGs, there are plenty of great PSX games that aren't RPGs and are quite affordable:

Action/Adventure:

  • Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (Okay, not the most affordable, but cheaper than a lot of JRPGs on PSX and a fan-freaking-tastic game)
  • Fighting Force
  • MediEvil 1 & 2
  • Mega Man 8
  • Mega Man X4 & X5
  • Mega Man Legends
  • Metal Gear Solid
  • Resident Evil 1-3
  • Spider-Man 1 & 2 (Different from PS2/XBox/Gamecube games)
  • Syphon Filter 1 & 2
  • Tenchu: Stealth Assassins
  • Twisted Metal 1 & 2
  • Vigilante 8

Early First-Person Shooters:

  • Descent & Descent Maximum
  • Final Doom
  • Quake 1 & 2

Fighting Games:

  • Marvel Super-Heroes
  • Mortal Kombat Trilogy
  • Street Fighter Collection
  • X-Men: Children of the Atom

Platformers:

  • Crash Bandicoot 1 & 2
  • Gex
  • Pac-Man World

Shoot Em Ups:

  • Einhander
  • G-Darius
  • Thunder Force V

If those games never drop in price after you bought them, sure why not

Wait. Tales games are $60? Where? I paid $130 for Tales of Desiny, and would like Desiny 2 as well, but that's the same price on Amazon... Though I would rather import the PSP version from Euope though... cheaper and portable. But I just don't know where to do so...

Yes, I am pretty obsesive about the Tales series.

i dunno what you mean exactly, but I personally started buying some PS1 games. I just have a handful of games so far. I think i will eventually get a few more games like the original Resident Evil and both Jet Moto and Jet Moto2, but thats really about it, and only IF i can find them for reasonable prices. The ps1 is a great console for some nostalgia, but I have more fun with my NES and Genesis. some PS1 games are just plain ugly to look at now and the load times can be horrible too. To ME a ps1 game is only worth $10 at most. No way i'm spending over $10 on a ps1 game. but that's just because and I know ANY ps1 game I want is going to be available somewhere in town or online for $10 or less. I just got Ace Combat 2 for $7 on amazon. totally worth it.

I actually find that some games don't look so good with HD, sure you can increase the resolution and picture clarity, but some of these older games were never meant to be this sharp, I find that upscaled games can look worse. though its still better then a normal PS1 hooked up to an HDTV, but I use a very good LCD SDTV for my older games, looks sharper then on my HDTV, even with the upscaling on the PS3

It's definitely worth the price... if you're patient enough. It's possible that you can just pay the high entrance fees of owning those titles, but I find it better to wait patiently for a more fiscal opportunity. It just takes time. I remember clearly trying to purchase Breath of Fire III. Each auction I watched on Ebay would go up towards $28-$40. Finally, I was able to find an auction in which I only paid $16 for the game. It was most definitely worth the wait. Just have to set a price you're willing to buy something. One that is somewhat reasonable.... can't expect to pick up Valkyrie Profile for $20 when $50-$60 would be a more reasonable benchmark compared to its usual $75-$100 price point.

I agree with this list, other then Quake 1 because that wasn't on the PS1, only N64 and Saturn. also I would forget all those Capcom 2D fighting games and instead get Street Fighter Alpha 3, which runs and plays better then these on the PS1

I wouldn't pay more than $50 for a psx game, I don't care what it is. Like someone else said, set a reasonable price point and be patient.

Regardless of how old it is, if itwill provide many hours of entertainment, I wouldn't mind paying as much as I would for a new game.

This coming from a guy who paid $130 for a game using SNES technology... I don't mind admitting I am a bit crazy for doing that. But still, many of us are willing to pay $60 for a short game with awesome graphics, so why not pay the same price for long game with bad graphics, if they don't bother you much? And to many of us, I don't think they do.

An LCD SDTV, this sounds very interesting to me =). Is this a hard TV to find would you imagine? And to TC if I were you I would just find a bunch of cheaper games that you want instead of spending alot of money on a single game that you might not like, and assuming that you like RPGs your gonna find very very few cheap quality games for the PS1, in comparison to something like the PS2.

its an LG , and the picture quality is brilliant for the older games, it also has a VGA socket , so I could use it as a computer monitor, but I currently use that for the Dreamcast.

This is what the Dreamcast looks like on this TV via the VGA, sadly it looks a bit bright through the webcam, but trust me , its not as bright as that on the actually TV.

this is what Dead Or Alive on the Saturn looks like on this TV, connected with an RGB SCART cable.

keep in mind these pics were taken with a pretty bad quality webcam

of course I also own a 32inch Sony Bravia HDTV, for the PS3, but for older games, this TV is better, its only a 17inch TV. but its really sharp.

Definitely gonna have to look into a TV like this lol. Im currently using a tiny little Toshiba CRT tele, got it to replace the 24 year old Mitsubishi TV I have been using, it has great picture quality though, maybe we make a trade lol

well, the model number for my TV is RZ-17LZ40 just remember that this is a PAL TV, so if you live in the US, that TV might not be available, or might have different model number. I would also assume that if there is a US model , it might be missing the RGB SCART socket, since its mostly a European PAL thing, and most US TVs don't have it , but it should still have the VGA and possibly an S-video socket.

i found my oldps1. it works fine and everything but it needs a memory card. i also have metal gear, fear effect, wild arms and star ocean 2

now i looked at theprices for the niche rpgs and holy crap they are expensive. 60 dollars for the tales games lunar is like 45 both the personas are expensive and suikoden 2 is a100 is it even worth it or should i just save up for the psp 2

i already own a xbox and ipod but they are nearly done game library wise

ps2snesgod
the way i see it collecting any disc-system isnt worth it. we know how long cds last so unless you have your games stored in a humidity controlled enviroment and barely handle them your ps1 games will be uselss in 5 to 10 years. go cartdrige systems! though they might need a mem battery changed they should last forever

Well he is right, to a point. The timeframe can be debated, but no matter how long it takes, it is inevitable that your disc-based system will wear out unless you simply don't play it. Moving parts wear out over time. I've had to replace 1 XBox, 1 XBox 360, and 2 PS2 Original models. And no, I don't beat up my systems and I don't have kids or a dog to do it for me.

It's funny though, because my older disc-based systems like Saturn, PSX, and Dreamcast work fine. My Sega CD is a little touchy with scratched discs, but it still works.

the only system that gives me trouble is the PS2, which sounds like its eating the disc rather then reading it. some of the early PS1 consoles have issues, but the later ones are mostly ok. just seems like newer consoles are basically built to break down so that you buy more/spend money on fixing it, same with controllers.

Is it worth the price to build your PS1 library?

Yes it is, Just because a game is of an older generation doesn't mean it is not fun.

I have recently bought a copy of Syphon Filter 3. For the same price as the playstation network price.

So yes if you have missed out on some Playsation 1/PSone classics.

Someone once told me that a "library" of games was a minimum of thirty titles in your collection. So finding 30 quality games for the original Playsation is easy enough. There is about 7000 games released for PS1.

So yes it is (The first Playsation has arguabally the best library of games out of all the Playstations)

well, i had my ps1 since 2000 , -not my first ps1 but its the only one i got left, cause the others blew fuses , , even though those were easy to fix i decided just get a new slim ps1, and it works still , the reason cd based systems tend to die is because people dont clean them regularly , if you buy a laser cleaner it should work flawlesly , and with cart based systems you have the same problems even worst you get green stuff and rust if you dont find some sort of cleaning kit so yes its good to collect but ugh everything goes bad if you dont take extreme caution
