I very much think it is. You are about to pull of a perfect headshot. As you slowly squeeze the trigger, your buddy notices his head on your screen and moves. It's cheating and you know it. It's not "smart playing" or "helpful info". It's cheating.

I consider it cheating, because you wouldn't be able to do it without being on the same tv screen. I guess that's why. It seems like an unfair advantage...

It can't be unfair if EVERYBODY has it. It's unavoidable, so just deal with it and look at their screen as well.

I like to use the term Unfair advantage other than the word "cheating".

I don't do it. In fact if I realize someone else is doing it, I quit the game. To me it is cheating because it creates an environment that detracts from the overall gameplay. I like to be able to kill the other person, but if he/she is looking at my screen, that makes it unfair to me. That's why I don't do it to them. I guess it goes against my policy for honesty.

Screw that noise. If you're playing a multiplayer game on one screen, it is perfectly fair for both you and your opponent to use every pixel of that screen to your advantage. Don't want your buddy dodging a headshot you lined up by camping with a rifle instead of going out to fight like a real man? Play online or over a LAN - anything where you each have a screen all to yourselves.

I have never in person ran into someone who considers using someone else's part of a split screen to avoid deadly attacks as cheating. If you want to call it foul play, fine. Just keep quiet about "foul play" in a military/war themed game. War is all about finding, creating, and/or maximizing unfair advantages to utterly destroy your opponent before s/he knows what happened. Every gamer I know, be they friend/family/acquaintance/nemesis simply considers this method of play a fact of life when it comes to split screen games.

Well, then, I hope I never play a splitscreen game with you. :) Kidding...

I guess it's the fact that it's not war. It's a game. And while I like to be competative, I believe there should be rules of conduct, similar to rules of engagement in wartime. If you want to go the war route. Theoretically, you could kill every Iraqi as a preemptive strike, it would be unfair and genocidal, but it would result in a tactical victory. Or the use of a biological bomb while supplying your troops with air filters.

It goes down to a sort of ethics, I guess.

Yes, ethics. To remain moral in a video game, you must simply abide by the rules enforced by the hardware and software. I haven't come across a game that has a penalty for looking at other people's part of the screen. If I did, I would certainly avoid bringing that penalty down on myself.

Cheating refers to an action that is not allowed or against the rules. To cheat in a video game, you either have to change the rules (with cheat codes), or modify the game. Since occasionally glancing six inches to the right or below my own section of the screen is neither of these, I do not see it as cheating.

On a side note, the last time I had the opportunity to play in this manner was the battle mode of Mario Kart Double Dash against my 12 year old brother. He realized what I was doing and started doing the same. It is currently the only game he can consistently beat me at. Everything else is either balanced or tipped slightly in my favor (less and less as he gets older).

Technically, I wouldn't call it "cheating", but it's still really lame. I mean, I honestly wouldn't even call glitching cheating because glitches are there for everyone to use. If everyone has an equal opportunity with only the materials they have to play the game, then it's technically fair game in my opinion. But that doesn't mean I like playing with glitchers or anything. I wouldn't consider them "cheaters", just jerks.

Cheating is taking advantage of a certain trick that gives you an unfair advantage. It is cheating if the other player is either unaware of it or is unable to do the same. In split screen console gaming the other player can screen look as much as you andus able tonoticeyou are doing it, so it ain't cheating.
