I've heard it's not the best looking game and there is a couple bugs but the concept appeals to me.
So is it worth playing?

I have it for both xbox and pc and i love the game, so yes its good game if you like 3rd person openworld survival zombie games.
Just dont expect it to be DayZ, Rust or anything to that kind, its a single player game with a story.
Also the 2dlc packs are pretty nice.
2013 BravoOneActual GOTY: State of Decay.
It's my favorite zombie game of all time*.... And that's saying something!
*RE4 technically contained no zombies.
Yes. It's very good. It has a great open world to explore, complete interiors to hide and loot for resources, a surprising amount of depth and delivers a wealth of emergent gameplay moments. It has alot of annoying quirks - several of them being deliberate design choices: like permadeath, persistent saving, dynamic mission system and the game not pausing with the map/inventory open.
Think of State of Decay like a mix of XCOMs base management, The Sims' social dynamics and Saints Row driving / combat all combining into a pretty cohesive Zombie survival game.
As for the graphics: On PC, at least, I think it has some of the most well done day/night cycle lighting. It really makes up for the poor model assests the game uses.
It's unpolished, but functional. The most glaring problems with this game is that navigation and the interface is poor and the game does not explain things very well (several times I thought something was bugged, but turns out the game functions in an uncommunicative way)
The one thing that has really put me off to this game is that it essentially continues to play even when you turn it off. I feel like that should have been a hardcore mode option. I don't need it to feel like my job, where you leave the office on a high note the day before and come back tomorrow to some else's mess....that's just not fun to me. But I've really been wanting to try it, so I finally caved when it went on sale for $3. Hard not to give it a shot at that point.

You have to consider that State of Decay was never intended to be a PC game or even anything else the XBX arcade title, so considering that its a pretty darn good title and also for the price.
