The only JRPGs I liked are:

FFVII, Suikoden V, Valkyrie Profile:Silmeria, Skies of Arcadia, Breath of Fire IV

Below is a list of all the JRPGs I played. Can you tell me if there are JRPGs (no pre-Playstation ones) I haven't played which have as many as possible of the following:

-good story (not like FFX)

-fun/cool characters (as different from Baten Kaitos characters as possible)

-interesting/fun bad guys (like ShinraCO from FF7, Lezard from VP:S, or the scheming noble from SuikodenV)

-good voice acting (like in FF12 or Lezard from VP:S)

-moments or dialogue lines that can GENUINELY ENTERTAIN YOU! (like Lezard from VP:S)

-that are not horrendously naive (Grandia 3, ugh ugh ugh)

What I played:

ARC: Twilight of the Spirits

Baten Kaitos

Breath of Fire 2,3, 4, Dragon Quarter
Chrono Cross
Dragon Quest VIII
Final Fantasy VI,VII,VIII,IX,X,X-2,XI,XII
Grandia 1,2,3
Legend of Dragoon
Legaia 2: Duel Saga
Rogue Galaxy
Skies of Arcadia
Star Ocean (3):Till the End of Time
Suikoden III-V
Tales of Legendia
Tales of Symphonia
Valkyrie Profile 2:Silmeria
Wild Arms 1,3
Xenosaga II

Yeah, that's the first thing that came to mind when I saw your list. Shadow Hearts 1,2,and 3 are all worth considering.

Also up for consideration would be the Digital Devil Saga series, SMT Nocturne, and Persona 3.

Persona 3 has good voice acting (imo) and a good story. It's something special.

And shadow hearts 2 has a brilliant story like Suikoden V.

I'd just like to add at this point, that I've never understood when people are giving praise to gameplay in JRPGs. I mean, it's mostly the same derivative stuff we've seen a million times already. Maybe sometimes there's some useless minor tweak added in the combat, which is fun for 10 rounds and matters not after that.

The only RPGs where I've seen something new (combat) is Tales series and FFXII...and even those battles became boooooooring in the long run.

What I'd like to see implemented JRPGs is that kind of crazy magic system I've seen in some D&D games I've played (like BGII-Shadow's of Amn for example). It makes mage battles and battles against strong enemies really interesting and addictive.

Thanks for those tips, in any case.

READ MY BLOG!

I DID!!! LOL!

And I mostly agree. I also don't like MMORPGs. And JRPGs really should change in many aspects.

Why can't there be hybrid games, where there is a lot of cinematic cutscenes and dialogue and where the game is more plot than subquest oriented, but where the game as a whole is more like western RPGs in regards to nonlinearity, battles, and choice in interaction.

Well, I guess Mass Effect is something like this, though I haven't played it (yet).

PS. I didn't like Oblivion though.

-good story (SMT: Nocturne has a very different story than other JRPGs, it's good)

-fun/cool characters (fun I don't think so , it has a dark/demon world, but there are cool characters like Dante!)

-interesting/fun bad guys (WOW full of bad guys, but they don't last long (some does) u see how bad they are then u kick thier @SS)

-good voice acting (no voice acting)

-moments or dialogue lines that can GENUINELY ENTERTAIN YOU! (it's will!!)

-that are not horrendously naive (not a chance)

Heinous-Uranus
ok I suggest SMT: Nocturne , my thoughts are in ur quotation.

I don't get that game. It's not the bad graphics and very routine gameplay that bothered me; that game just wasn't exciting. It didn't grip me at all. I think the characters were pointless and uninteresting, the storyline was unimaginative, and Kefka - I had heard a lot of him - turns out to be some clown with a stupid laughter who isn't interesting or cool at all.

FF6 is probably the worst RPG that I've played, right there with Chrono Cross.

I don't know, it seems that other people have some kind of tolerance for completely uninteresting characters that I lack.

Look, I've played a lot of JRPGs (more than you have), and I have seen some crap, and I've seen some great stuff, and this game has the great stuff. Were you playing a fan translation or something, because the one I played had quite a bit of personality. And Kefka's the type of guy who doesn't take crap from anybody. Why should any villain?

OK, I have to admit, I only played to the part where the world got destroyed, but up to that point there wasn't even one mildly entertaining moment.

Personality and charm are the things that could have saved this game with poor graphics and repetitive, frequent random encounters, but there wasn't the slightest sign of either.

It was so uninteresting that I can't remember a single line of dialogue, nor the plot at all.

Then you shouldn't really form a valid opinion until you've finished it. Who knows, you may like blasting through kefka's tower.

The game had quite a bit of personality and charm, especially in the music area. And the game had some pretty good graphics, and no more random encounters than any other game of the time. FF7 had frequent random encounters.

I can remember quite a bit, and I've played through an utter crapload of JRPGs.

If you're looking for a good story, check out Xenogears. But be prepared to put in a good chunk of time. I put in 80 hours into this one. It starts out kind of ordinary, but it really picks up and becomes really interesting. It's also got really great music, from the composer of the Chrono series.

The winners are the first two Suikoden games, Xenogears, Paper Mario series, and Shadow hearts.

If you don't mind action, then there is also Vagrant Story, Tales of, and Brave Fencer Mushashi.

Unfortunately, a lot of those cost quite a bit of scratch ($125 for Suikoden 2-$15 Shadow Hearts: New World), so do more research before deciding.
