I'm about 35% done with the game and it's really just boring the hell out of me because so far just about every mission is the same. Go kill this guy. Go kill that guy. Go kill a group of guys. I mean, there is zero variety. Do you ever get to do anything fun in this game or is it the same dumb mission over and over? Please, don't spoil anything, but if possible just let me know if the missions ever change.

Fanboys of the game will say they will, but they won't. I have always loved the GTA series but I too had to force myself to finish. It's not a bad game, but just didn't live up to the hype or scores imo. I recently tried to play it some more but after running over a few peds and shooting a few pigs it just lost all of it's appeal. I can't even force myself to get the rest of the achievements.

I've been asking myself the same thing. While the missions really do involve the same thing over and over again, the set up is usually enough of a hook for me to see it through. The main issue I have is that damned social calls. I don't want to be penalized for not wanting to do something in a free roam video game, especially something with no bearing on advancing the plot. It undermines what GTA is all about.

There are slight variations, but it doesn't change in a major way. It remains "steal this car, kill that guy, fly a helicopter, deliver a body, fight through this building etc..." To me, the missions are varied enough. Whenever you get sick of them, you can do some other stuff, like search for random characters (some are very interesting), steal cars, do some assassination missions, go bowling etc.

I'm sorry you're not enjoying it. I think it's a fantastic game, albeit one that doesn't quite deserve a 10, in my opinion. It's a solid 9-9.5, though.....

Funny you mention this. I didn't buy GTA when it came out as I had exams and knew I would get distracted. About a week ago I went to a friends and started playing GTAIV. It just felt so familiar: it felt like I was playing the other three GTA games from last gen; from the driving, to the story, to the city.

I think you are right.

I got about 55% completion and then I couldn't force myself to play it anymore. There is zero variety in the story missions. It doesn't have any of the great features of Saints Row or San Andreas. You get calls constantly to hang out with your friends. The leisure activites get boring and repetitive real quick. There's nothing to spend your money on. Extremely limited clothing options.

Guess I'm not alone in my feelings for this game.. It's too bad, because I really want to like it. I mean, I paid sixty bucks for it and I expected it to be awesome because it was worked on for so long and because it got solid 10s by almost every reviewer. Eh...guess I can't place my trust in game reviwers anymore.

There are deinitely some great things about the game, but I still find it to be quite boring. Oh well, at least Prototype looks badass.

Now that i beat the game, I still have almost 35% not completed which makes me angry. I beat the story and the assassin missions, but i dont know how to get 100% except by finding all those flying rats, which i rather not do because it is boring. Is there anything else in gta4 besides killing flying rats that can raise your percentage up?

Yeah I think I speak for a lot of people when I say that Rockstar definitely didn't uphold it's standards. This was most likely due to the major rush to get the game out. There's glitches, no real story, and no variety.

GTAIV's mission structure is pretty uninspired. It doesn't take long to realize this. Drive here, kill that guy, drive there, get new mission to repeat the process. I think maybe the developers thought that throwing in dating, and various other outings with friends would spice things up. The problem with that line of thinking is how doing stuff with friends isn't much fun at all, and becomes a chore pretty quickly.

I did finish the storyline, but I think the only thing that kept me going (not including my own will to finish) was how even though the missions all boiled down to the same thing, within the huge environment i often had crazy things happen to me.

I can actually sit down with a couple friends and play a game series like Metal Gear Solid and have the spectators enjoying themselves just watching the game be played, and the storyline unfold. But GTAIV's story is very much "just there" to set up the next mission, and has very little to set it apart.

It's a great game, don't get me wrong. But I find that whenever I sit down to play, I just mess around for a bit, and then move on to something else.

Didn't you all know that's what you're signing up for when you get a GTA game? How are the other ones any "better"? I think people enjoy the games (myself included) because of the fun factor of the missions - they're not that repetitive as new characters are constantly thrown into the mix- and the story (GTAIV especially for the story).

Um, gee.. the other ones had lots more activities and features, not too mention less one-dimensional characters.

GTA IV is pretty much just that. Wait until you get to the endless mob missions, then it really gets bad.

Thank god I'm not the only person on here to actually like the game. It has a few flaws, but when people start speaking about the "lack of content", "no story", "one-dimensional characters", "no variety", I start wondering whether they even played the same game as me.

The only things that really bothered me were that acquiring property has been taken out, and that there are still no mid-mission checkpoints. Most of the criticisms on this thread, however, I completely disagree with.

This is the only game I've ever played that's hated solely because of high review scores. How anyone can argue that it's a poor, boring game is totally beyond me...

I feel ya. Though I love the GTA series, I usually just do the missions and camp out at 80-95%, just screwing around with cheats and such.

But I was able to finish IV and LCS.

For me, I beat the game and really don't necessarily desire to go back. I mean, there ARE thing's that I like about the game, but at the same time alot of those thing's don't need to be done. I'm currently playing alot of other games but not playing this one. When I get tired of the others, I'll come back to this one.

Me and my friends made up wierd free roam games when we play. For example we play helicopter jump. Where everyone gets in a helicopter with machine guns (can't remember name) and we fly past Central Park and try and jump in the lake. You can make some variety if you have some friends. But I will admit that YOU HAVE TO HAVE FRIENDS otherwise it is boring.

Are you that closed-minded? How can you ask "How anyone can argue that it's a poor, boring game"? Have you read any other posts in this thread? And BYW, this criticism comes from people who played the game. Don't believe me? Not that I care, but check my gamer card.

most of the missions in gta revolve around killing people, but thats like complaining about shooting in a fps game, what did you expect to be, SMG are something? GTA is about killing people most of the time and that will never change, do I find it be all that and a bag of chips nope, I find the serie's to be fun, but a tad bit overated because of the lack of mission variety.

It's fine that most of the missions deal with killing people, but there are a lot of other other aspects of crime life that they could have been explored. I guess I just expected some more creativity in the missions. For a game that claims to be a totally open-ended do-whatever-you-want game, there really isn't that much you can do.

i think the cause of all the missions seeming to be the same is that rockstar wanted to make it more realistic and story driven so you won't get to do the mission where you steal the jetpack because that would totally mess with the story

I think instead of adding so many pointless missions they should have upped the graphics and made a better multiplayer. I had to force myself to play through most of the game as well, and most of the missions were boring as all hell, with the exception of the Clover mission, which is probably my favorite of any GTA.

Also, they went a little overboard with the pigeons. 200 in the whole game? god damn, I got bored after like 20 haha.

well, i own GTA 4 and sorry to tell u that the missions dont change much, what mainly kept me going is the storyline. however if u get cheats to it and have a creative mind, u cant entertain urself pretty good. i fly as high as i can in a helicopter then nose dive into the ocean. just for the heck of it. also if u dont already know, the statue of happiness has a big grin on it's face, is holding a cup of coffee instead of a torch, and if u go inside it it has a large beating heart held up by chains. I was also flying around in the helicopter and found a building that said "GETALIFE". I also read the news on one of the computers...gotta tell u its pretty interesting. I dont no about u but i can keep myself pretty entertained.i well,

This is what I've never overly liked GTA for. However the story has been better in past games, like in the San Andreas it wasen't just killing people. Mostly was, but not always.

I was really blown away by GTAIV, until MGS4 came out. Now I can't even go back to finish it, playing Civ Rev, NCAA09 (tonite) I don't know what it is but this one just doesn't keep me coming back like SA did.
