Is this what it felt like when 2D died?

The more I hear about motion control, stereoscopic technology, and upcoming (read: 1 week after game release) DLC, the less I care about gaming. I'm just 21 and already feel like an old man reminiscing about the days when games were just games. Normally I just ignore fads but I'm noticing that since the 360 kicked off the latest generation I've been buying less games each year. Anyone share my sentiment?

No I don't share those sentiments. I've been an avid gamer since the Atari 2600 days and right now I'm enjoying gaming more then I've ever have. Not only am I buying more games these days but I'm also buying them from a wider selection of developers as well.

I dont agree but i do wish games were just games, where DLC's did not exist. Sure I enjoy them but the game industry to no ones surprise uses them to there advantage.

I can share some of your sentiment here. I love 2D gaming and I really like that graphics continue to get better but I really hope that gaming doesn't take us in a direction that is completely different than the traditional way of gaming. Too much motion control and what not is a bad thing to me.

These threads always seem to pop-up from time to time, "I've grown tired of gaming", "it's not the same as the old days"....

I'd recommend taking a break if I were you, or maybe you are growing out of it. Peoples' likes and dislikes change all the time, perhaps it's not what's going on with gaming, but with you. No offense or anything meant. I find when I start feeling this way a new game comes out that reinvigorates my passion (Mario Galaxy, Batman: AA).

Try coming back later?

No, back when 2D switched to 3D everyone knew it was the future. Stuff like stereoscopic technology and motion controls are gimmicks which is nothing new to the game industry. Stereoscopic gaming and motion controls are actually nothing new and have been around since the 8-bit days, it's just that this is the first time where they actually don't suck (although to be fair I hear that the Sega Master System's 3D vision glasses were actually pretty decent). I've also found that I'm less into gaming now than I used to be, but that's mostly a result of me starting a career now and having a lot less time to play games than back when I was a child or teenager and basically had nothing better to do in my free time.

Tc your just spending too much time in SW, take a break from it (like when you were a little kid that you knew nothing about the gaming world/industry, things seem more simpler and enjoyable. SW also takes the fun out gaming)

Holy crap! This is me to a T!!!!

I'm not overly excited with some of the interactive control methods being introduced to gaming but I will watch with interest whilst it develops! As with all "big" changes the key to success is doing it right. Remember when the shift from 2D to 3D first happened? There were many games with terrible controls, poor camera angles/motion, etc.

IMO, gaming right now is the best it's been. We're at the peak of the current "style" and about to move into something new. As long as they learn from the mistakes made with previous innovations and concentrate on making games enjoyable rather than just innovative it's going to be great!

PS : Can't wait for Natal Pitfall. Got my launge room all setup with holes, snakes, ropes and ladders!

I share some of that sentiment. I've also not been interested in most of the new generation, not enough to warrant buying a console anyway. But I'm buying more games than ever ever ever! I just buy old systems as much I can. Ow, and I'm finally starting to get some use out of my PSP, that's a welcome change, since I bought it at launch and always regretted it so far.

I really do miss the old NES, SNES, and GENESIS days so much. Each game was a lot of fun. Now lots of games are like shooters... I like shooters but I miss original games like MK 3, SMB3, SONIC.... all this generation. Games are changing... in a new vision. I equally enjoy this game generation as much as the 2D. I just wish I still had my Genesis and my NES still. Still got a SNES though, still want my GENESIS back.

Maybe you weren't meant to play always, some of my friends have stopped because they haven't found as many action adventure and platafformers than before, nowadays there's a lot of emphasis in FPS and they don't seem to like it, maybe neither do you.

I'm not a big fan of DLC or motion control myself, but I think there's still good games out there being made. I'm more interested in handheld games than anything though, but that's just me. The 3DS is the most exciting news I've had to look forward to in years.

I share some of your sentiment. I myself am wondering why can't a Gaming System whether Console or Handheld be about games? Why does it always have to feature these practically useless things such as Chat. Live talk through a headset during a game. Sure the Wireless aspect is nice; yopu don't hav to worry about cables of any kind (GB, GBC and GBA). but on the other hand I don't need a Shop Channel, a Forecast Channel, etc. Thats what I have a TV for. (Wii- thats you). So, its both good and bad; all this new stuff.

Yeah, I kinda do miss the days when there was no motion control, DLC, Trophies and stuff like that, when the only award you got for completing a game 100% was the feeling of accomplishment and not a platinum trophy or points for gamerscore. Yeah I feel your sentiment, but that doesnt prevent me from buying games, I think as long as games stay fresh, new, and original I will still keep buying. When games start to feel stale and repetitive then I might lose interest. I like all this innovative stuff that these companies are doing, but I would just rather use a regular controller rather than use my body, hell if I wanted to exercise I would go outside (Psh yeah right :P) So yes I kinda share your point of view, but times change, we gotta learn to live with it, nothing lasts forever, but we do have fond memories, and when we feel like it, we can dust off those old SNES and Playstations we all have stored in our attic and feel that warm nostalgic feeling that is old school gaming. Im sorry if some of that doesnt make since or I started to babble a little bit, its 2 AM here and im tired.

There's still plenty of quality games being released, and that's all care about.

All the stuff you mentioned doesn't bother me in the slightest as long as goood games still get released, and as I said earlier, they are.

not for me. one of the aspects of gaming ive always had an interest in the technology side, i suppose thats the geek in me. for me game are better than they have ever been. i would rather play RDR, SMG2, Uncharted 2 or Batman AA than ANY 2D game.

if i felt like you i would of stopped gaming a long time ago

I haven't come to a conclusion on how I feel about the current direction of gaming. I know that my dream is to be able to play in a virtual reality environment (like the Holodeck on Star Trek), and the current trends are helping us towards that direction. As for the gimmicky motion controls, not really a fan. Gimmicky 3D gaming, not really a fan of that idea either. I'm not a fan of gimmicks. Until they get it right I'll stick to my K&M setup.

I Agree, I've always thought that would be the coolest thing ever. and once we can do it (or do do it) I'll be one of the early adopters for sure. but gaming In general is changing and I'm not sure how much I like it. 1 thing I hate now about gaming is that alot of good games never see PC releases anymore. While we have pirates to blame partly for that. Idk. But as for the topic at hand. I say Screw motion control. Its fun for a while... but its just not Gaming... (glad none of this is really coming to PC... or PSP) (which I play alot). So as for Me... I have my Re-wired XBOX Original Plug to USB cable I made (for my madcatz steering wheel), My Shortened, Wired Xbox 360 Controller (White, getting a Black one soon) and My trusty Keyboard and Mouse.

Nah, I'm enjoying games a lot these days. The only thing I worry about is that a lot of games seem to be getting shorter. Maybe it just depends on which games I play, but in the N64 days I thought a 20 hour main game was normal, whereas I now have a lot of games that have 6-hour campaigns.

Motion control for me has become just a second natural way of gaming. I already hate playing shooters with a regular Gamepad, and it can really enhance platforming and adventure games when implemented well.
