Having played and loved Mass Effect, I wanted to explore Bioware's catalog a bit. I'd somehow missed out on Knights Of The Old Republic (Xbox) when it came out, so seeing it was on the list for BC on the 360, I picked it up a few days ago. As I played, I began noticing some strange problems in the game - the opening cinematic, who's framerate was so sluggish, it almost stood still.

Then, as I played on, I realized parts of the spoken dialogue were missing. In the middle of a sentence of dialogue, the sound would just cut out completely. This happens very frequently, and throughout the entire game. Needless to say, this takes you out of the experience completely.

I've asked around about this, and this is indeed an emulation issue affecting this game. But my question is, why would you even bother adding a classic like this to the list if you are going to make it unplayable? And no patch?

I looked on Xbox.com's "known glitches" page for emulation before I bought the game, and nothing was there.

Anyway, just a heads up for everyone. I had no idea this was being handled so poorly in some cases.

Yep, KOTOR was on the games that put me off Xbox 360 "backwards compatibility" forever. Slow framerates and various glitches can strike at any time... and what happens if you're say, 20 hours into a game when it happens?
I've still got an Xbox, and I'll still play Xbox games on it. This even includes the downloadable Xbox games... it's the exact same broken emulation, just in a downloadable form with DRM.

I'm with you, the 360's backwards compatability is pretty broken. Often I hear this loud static pop and I frequently need to restart my Xbox 360. I would suggest that no one buys any Xbox Originals either by disc or DLC until these problems are resolved.

KOTOR 2 was even worse.

Kotor 1 also had sound synchronization problems. If you passed through Dantooine, you'll know what I mean.

If you liked these games that much, try the PC versions. System requirements on boththesegames are not that much

Thanks for the heads-up about the originals. I almost DL'd one last night, but now I think I'll pass.

Can't they come up with some way to fix this (even though we all know they won't bother)?

There is a part in the undercity where there's absolutely no sound for 15 minutes straight. :|

It really sucks about the BC on the 360. That is one of the things that made me cringe when I heard the PS3 was going the emulation route on all the new units. It totally turned me off on taking the plunge with either system.

The rest of this is a bit off topic so let me apologize for that in advance.

I wanted to give you Knights of the Old Republic (first one) fans the heads up that it is in the Star Wars Best of PC box set. That set is 35 bucks on Amazon and you may be able to find it for less. That set includes 4 other great older games that will all run on fairly modest systems. Empire at War might chug a bit on a weak system but it's the RTS and it should not take too much away from game play if it does. In that set you get,
KOTR 1
Empire at War
Battlefront
Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast
Republic Commando

A 14 day trial for Galaxies is included but that's more of an advert than a game.

All of those games are great and the set should provide even the most A.D.D. gamer with 40 to 50 hours of solid game play at the very least. I was one of the people that missed the boat on all of these games so I made out like a bandit. Another thing that is nice is while the games are on 2 DVD's they all boot from the same game disc so it's nice to have them all loaded on the laptop for trips and such and only need the one disc.
