it does have level scaling.
personally i didnt like the game. it was good for the first disc....and then it just went south. the characters are just rubbish and the story is real nonsensical gibberish imho. the battle system is also poor (it basically discourages u from using magic and u need to spend ages capturing it which is a bit silly). by the end....i really couldnt care less what happened to my characters so i just stopped playing. gunblades are very pretty though.
Enemies level up too as you do. But I think that's better, for a more challenging gameplay. For me, FF8 is better than FF7.jamestabang
exactly
FF8 is excellent game. very good graphics, beautiful cg movies, excellent soundtrack which you'll listen later so many times. great character and story advancement, its better love theme than FFX. easy battle system, cool moves. etc etc. its a game that you should play.
But I heard the game has level scailing, which is a HUGE turn off of the game for me, can anyone confirm that FF8 has level scailing?catlin_czirr
Trust me it won't even matter since overall the games pretty easy. I haven't even noticed the level scaling until you told me. I think every monster however has a level limit.
final fantasy 7 was superior in a lot of ways... but i loved the sheer volume of side-quests that FF8 has. So many summon spells that take a lot of work to get... King Tonberry, Ghost Train, etc.
If you take on this game, I would recommend a good strategy guide (or GameSpot walkthrough) so that you don't miss these incredible fights/extras.
All that said... I played FF8 all the way through once, and haven't played it since.
FF8 does have level scaling, the big turn off for me was drawing magic, it takes FOREVER. seriously do you want to spend 15 minutes drawing one spell over and over just to fill up to 99 casts? then once you junction them to your character its great that you get bonuses for them but in mid battle you think "is it worth losing that STR boost to cast Fire?" also you really don't have to go out of your way to get new weapons until the very end of the game which is lame imo (and it takes awhile to get the material to make the new equipment) i couldn't play all the way through it and stopped caring i think it was on disk 2. z4twenny
completely agree. if they had made it so that you had to draw each spell once, and then get the bonus for it, then that would have made a whole lot more sense.

same here. even each FF game surpasses older ones, FFVIII is still my favorite game. the story development in that game is the perfect
The story was definately a little blah and underwhelming when compared to FF 6 & 7..and I quit playing it halfway through (but that's how I am with every RPG I play). And that card battling game was terrible as well IMO. But if you like RPGs then go for it.
FFVII was more fun to me.And I liked the characters way better.
VIII was good for the story. But I hated the gameplay.
Skip 8 and go to 9.spazzx625
This. Seriously though, if you want to play VIII, you'll probably love it or hate it. On level scaling: it happens, but if you play normally, you should be fine. The only time the scaling becomes a problem is if you've level grinded a lot but not built up your characters/Guardian Forces well enough. If you level grind and go for good development, it isn't a problem (but controlled levelling and such ain't my cup of tea).
The story is all over the place, but the music is top notch. I played it really late, sometime between 2004 and 2006 I reckon, but I still enjoyed it. Just not as much as IX ;)
I would like to try VIII again. I tried to play through it twice, got stuck in teh same place both times and quit. The game just didn't hold my interest for some reason.
I beat VII on the other hand, and immediately played through it again. I think I used a walkthrough the second time to beat it with the side quests. I still need to do knights of the round table though.
I just recently beat IX, awsome game. Get it at least, because whether or not you play it right away, it's going to be a rare game.
So now I am playing FFX, and it's really great too. I think I am appreciating it more now that I beat IX. I am playing FFIV on the side, and digging that as well. (It's in the Chronicles pack).
But it's that new appreciation for FFX that makes me think that trying VIII again might be rewarding.
FF7 is way better than FF8! FF7 is awesome in absolutely every way.
The card game in FF8 was cool, the graphics were good at the time and the music was great. The story is good even though a bit weird, but still immersive. On the other hand, the weapon system is terrible (you just hope that the required items drop, or else you have to look at a walkthrough), the draw system is annoying and time-consuming (equipping magic). Every time you use a good magic, your stats decrease...
I will probably play FF8 soon, since I've only played it once.
VIII is lame compared to IX...Get IX if you enjoyed VII.Xavier_12

9 is the worst ff title because it didnt try anything to surpass its predecessors and after cool characters of FF, they ruined this with 9. FF9 is the only FF title doesnt fit FF franchise. there is nothing cool in FF9 and its childish style doesnt fit in a FF title. it would be good game if it were a different game but its just pressured by its name. also its end very bad too which makes the game worse. its nothing more than a 8.0 score game. ( I meant these about being FF title, FF9 is not a bad game )
The problems with the gameplay is the Junction System and the reliance on Summons. My assumption on the development of FF8: "Everybody thinks the summons in FF7 are awesome!!!! We should maker players use summons all the time!!!"LoserMike
I mentioned earlier in this thread that the battle system was my least liked aspsect of the game, and what you just mentioned was the core of it. I remember fighting boss battles where it'd pretty much came down to summoning over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and...whup, still about 50 hp left...over again. And lets not forget having to watch the entire animation sequence of these summons for every time you do one.
The junction system was just poorly designed in general.
I enjoyed FF8 more than FF7. FF7 story was just something that Ive already seen before(Mad man taking over the world got to stop him). Also FF8 had awesome CG scenes and soo many twist and turns. Over all the combat of the two is pretty much the same. The only real difference is magic. Found FF12 a complete failure. Combat system ripped off FF11 and my god was the story super boring.zaku101
I completely agree. I enjoyed FF8 more as well. As for FF12, i could not even finish it. However, I still enjoyed FFX the most.
Just thought I would stop back into this thread to let you know I picked up VIII for $30 new, shrink wrapped and ready to rock today. I am going to finish X first (I think I will probably be finished IV at the same time) and then it will be time to try VIII again.
In my opinion, I love FF IX.

Why did you spend $30 on a sealed copy when its $14.99 on amazon?
Nevermind they raised the prices on amazon to $19.95 but it can still be found on eBay for $15 or here for under $20
