So, yeah. I just bought a Saturn and I have a few questions. Before I get to that let me tell you what I'm getting:

  • System, chords, and, controller
  • Marvel Super Heroes Vs Street Fighter
  • Vampire Savior w/ 4mb Ram Cart
  • Limited Edition Policenauts
  • Rockman X3
  • Fighters Megamix
  • Street Fighter Collection

Thing is, the particular System I got is a Japanese Saturn (all games are japanese as well). I believe it is the original Saturn model if it matters. Now I've imported so much software I've lost track of it all, but I've never imported hardware. Do I need to buy some kind of step up/down power converter? Or can I just plug the system in and be ok? I'd rather not start a fire or something :P.

Also, any good JP Saturn games that don't break the wallet? I'm mostly interested in games similar to the ones I already have, though I am looking out for a copy of Princess Crown and Akumajō Dracula X: Gekka no Yasōkyoku (aka castlevania symphony of the night). Maybe Rayearth as well. Also, Shmups :D.

Both U.S. games and JP games are fine. Just keep the U.S. games to games that aren't super famous (virtua fighter, hotd, daytona usa, etc). I've owned a U.S. Saturn in the past and know most of the famous games already. As for the JP games, little to moderate JP text is fine but I'd rather not have to deal with games that are super text heavy.

Thanks for the info.

japanese systems will work in the US because they have the same power stuff in it and the same tv output. if it gets too much power a fuse will melt.

the japanese saturn may run slightly warmer than a N.A. model, just give it enough vent room just to be safe, but i've never needed a convertor for my saturn.. shmups and fighters are very import friendly (not alot of reading involved). guardian heroes is a great game, japanese version has a bit of reading but it can be skipped through and the great gameplay makes up for it, shin shinobiden (shinobi) is cool,layer section, gekrindan, strikers 1945 series. go to racketboy.com and check out the saturn section.

Get an Action Replay 4M Auto Plus, it allows you to play imports, use cheats and it also works as a 4mb RAM cart. You can get one from Play-Asia, and it's a requirement if you are getting a Sega Saturn.

And if you can afford it, get Panzer Dragoon Saga.

All of my imported consoles have worked fine using US power, the Saturn is no different.

Hey unknown37 - I know your a fan of fighting games so check out Fighting Vipers - I imported the game myself because Pepsiman is an unlockable character in the JP version but not in the NA version.

Almost everyone here did not even read the original post carefully. Unknown37 got a hold of the JAPANESE MODEL...not the US version. Anyways... The japanese version does not need a power converter. You can plug it straight into the wall but make sure you have it in a cool area because it does get warmer than usual. Try to keep the 4mb Ram Cart in the Saturn at all times and do not keep removing it too many times because the hook-in is very sensitive over-time and will not read the RAM Cart easily (you will eventually have to jiggle it around a bit for the saturn to recognize it if you put it in and out too much)

I can go on and on here about SHMUPS & FIGHTERS.

Shmups

* Radiant Silvergun
* Batsugun
* Guardian Force
* Gun Frontier
* Battle Garegga
* Blast Wind
* Metal Black
* Cotton 2
* Cotton Bommerang
* Layer Section I & II / Galactic Attack
* Kyukyoku Tiger II Plus
* Sengoku Blade
* Twinkle Star Sprites
* Game Tengoku
* Shippu Mahou Daisakusen/Kingdom Grandprix
* Hyper Duel
* Thunderforce Gold Pack 1
* Thunderforce Gold Pack 2
* Soukyugurentai
* Shienryu
* Gunbird
* Konami's Deluxe Packs (Gradius, Salamander, Parodius and Twinbee)
* Chatting Parodius
* Sexy Parodius
* Strikers 1945 (?)
* Image Fight/X-Multiply
* Thunder Force V
* Darius Gaiden

Fighters

* Darkstalkers
* Vampire Hunter
* Vampire Savior
* Street Fighter Alpha
* Street Fighter ALpha 2
* Street Fighter Alpha 3
* X-Men: Children of the Atom
* Marvel Super Heroes
* X-Men vs. Street Fighter
* Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter
* Street Fighter Collection
* Capcom Generations 5
* Fatal Fury 3
* Real Bout: Fatal Fury
* Real Bout: Fatal Fury Special
* World Heroes Perfect
* King of Fighters '95, KOF '96, and KOF '97
* Cyberbots: Full Metal Madness
* Waku Waku 7
* Astra Superstars
* Pocket Fighter
* Asuka 120% Burning Fest Limited
* Samurai Shodown III and IV

This list wast taken straigt from Racketboy.com, I might have missed a couple. Most of the fighters are really cheap on ebay, the only ones in the $50 range might be Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter, Waku Waku & Street Fighter Alpha 3. Most of the Shmups are expensive ...atleast if you are purchasing online ranging between $30-$300. I'm a collector myself so I try to hunt them down for the best deals and in the best shape possible. Good luck and have fun!

I understand enough Japenese to get by in most games, it's just I'd rather not have it where the game is basically just text, since I don't know it that well.

My understanding of it is probably comparable to the literacy level of an American first grader's english level.

Already have one around here somewhere. A friend gave it to me but I have no idea where it is :P.

I'll probably just buy a new one.

if you like fighting games, then I highely recommend Dead or Alive, as its both a great fighting game and one of the best looking games on the system

I would tell you to get Panzer Saga but because of its price......maybe not

Street Fighter Zero 3 is defenitly worth getting in my opinion as I think its the best in the series andthe saturn versionbetter then any other version on a home system.

Real Bout special (its a long Japanese name I cant remember), is a great 2D fighter.

Burning Rangers is a great game to get, if you can find it for a decent price.

Resident Evil, if you dont have it for another system.

that should start you off

Thanks! So which of those are the cheapest? I know the saturn shmups can cost an arm and a leg, but at the moment I don't have a lot of money. There are some exceptions, but I'd rather not spend more than $15-20 a game.

As for the fighting games, I'll look into these.

  • Cyberbots: Full Metal Madness

  • Pocket Fighter
  • Asuka 120% Burning Fest Limited

I've played most Capcom games and own a Neo Geo, but those are few you mentioned there I've never even heard of. So I'll definitely check them out.

I would get DOA but I already have 2 and 3, and I don't have the money for it unless I see it for like $3 shipped.

I'd like to get Panzer Saga, but yeah It can be pricey :P. I'm planning on probably getting the other panzer games though.

I'll probably pass on Alpha 3 since a friend of mine already has the arcade board of it, though I might get it eventually.

It's called Real Bout Fatal Fury Special. And I have a superior version of it already.

I'll check out Burning Rangers cause I've never heard of it, thanks for the suggestion.

As for RE, I have the GC remake so I'm good.

Thanks for the suggestions!

$15-20 ... I would say...

-Layer Section

-Layer Section II

-Darius

-unfortunately...that's it...unless you get really lucky on ebay.

-my personal favorites are Soukyugurentai & Batsugun that are definitely worth the money.

-Pocket Fighters is another Capcom fighter ...with mixed characters from other Capcom fighters...in chibi (mini) form. I enjoy it myself.

-Asuka 120% Burning Fest Limited is just another 2D fighter with female characters.

-the rest you can just check out on youtube to see what they look like.

if you know enough Japanese, then you could get the Japanese version of Panzer Saga, its actually quite cheap in comparison, and the game is amazing. oh and good luck finding Astra superstars, that game is extremely rare, ive found only one copy on the net and it cost over £100. also if you want a good platformer, get Astal, a 2D platformer thats not expensive and very good. and of course, you need to get NiGHTS into dreams, its a must

Sadly with all the shmups listed above, no one's mentioned Gradius Deluxe Pack, Salamander Deluxe Pack, Detana Twinbee Yahho! Deluxe Pack, Parodius Deluxe Pack, Jikkyou Oshaberi Parodius Deluxe Pack, or Sexy Parodius, all quite good on the Saturn, and all games that I already own for my Saturn.

Rockman 8 Saturn isn't so bad either, the stages are just as irritating, but the Wood and Cutman cameos are quite nice, not to mention no Fudd Light in this one. Super Adventure Rockman is a nice one too, kinda in the vein of Dragon's Lair.

Again, no one bothers reading previous posts carefully.

All of those titles were mentioned in my post. Read carefully.
