Just realized a game I got years ago was a bootleg.

Last night I sat down to play Final Fantasy 1 for GBA. The one that has the first 2 on it. I played for an hour or two then saved and shut it off. I turned it back on later and the save file didn't exist. No warning of corrupted data, no notice. Just gone.

I bought this game from a suspicious ebay member that had a high approval rating. I got the game and it didn't look right, but it still played and saved initially. Now, it doesn't save at all. I don't intend on running through the entire Final Fantasy game without saving.

Any suggestions?

Early games used to have an actuall battery inside .. maybe you can open the cartridge without damaging it ans see what 's in there? I once played an ff game on my Ps1 ..I think it was ff9 .. my memory card broke and I ended up playing a huge chunck of the game without saving .. just leaving thePs1 running.

if you're playing on a gba i mean, really, what's the harm in leaving it on? especially if it's an sp or something with a charger. unless... you're playing on the go, then you'd have some potential problems. the only alternative would be to troubleshoot the battery... but i am pretty sure the only way of doing that would be to change the battery.

I believe that GBa games don't use an actual battery for saves, I think they use some sort of solid-state flash or something. Some GBA games have batteries for clocks, and the old GB games have batteries, but I don't think that GBA ones do.

This is my concern. I'm fairly sure that this was a flash based memory system on official carts that shipped. Knowing that mine has a battery instead pretty much says it all.

It's most likely a bootleg. Pirated GBA games are very common. There's websites that can help you tell whether yours is actually a bootleg copy. Do a google search.

Yeah, if you open up the cartridge and see a battery, then it's most definitely a bootleg.

The good news is that those batteries are pretty easy to replace on your own. I've replaced dozens of them in original Gameboy and GBC cartridges, and I had to replace the one in the bootleg GBA game I received.

Of course, if you just received this game, the course of action is to immediately contact the seller and tell him you know he's selling pirated games and that you're going to report him. Most likely he'll just refund your money (assuming you paid through Paypal).

Order from Amazon, not ebay. That's all I can suggest.

Noted. I stopped using Ebay a while ago. I switched to Amazon a few months ago. I got really sick of getting bootlegs all the time. When I order from Amazon, these problems don't happen to me. In fact, everything I've bought from Amazon has been legit so far.

I bought this game 2 years ago so the chances that this guy is still there are slim. Oh well. At least I learned my lesson before I dropped a ton of cash.

Ah well. Just install another battery. It's not tough. There are probably 100+ guides for it on the net.

farrell2k

yeah, it might not be a fake. try looking up battery replacement online before you just throw it away.

Yeah the Gameboy Color with its HUGE carts had batteries to keep the saves.
