***UPDATE***
Yesterday 12/4/2007
Kotaku reported that the Kane and Lynch site dropped the Five Star "Ratings"
As usial I'm a little late in getting around to posting this.

GameBump.com reported yesterday that the official Kane & Lynch website flat out lies about the score given by both GameSpy and Game Informer claming both gave the game 5 stars. The first problem is that Game Informer does not use stars and actually gave the game 7/10 and, GameSpy gave it 3/5 stars.

The second problem is the review quotes shown on the Kane & Lynch Web site are not in the reviews of the game and were most likely taken from E3 hands on previews.

The GameSpy review score is 3 stars. or 6 out of 10 (sound familiar)
The Game Informer review score of 7 out of 10 would be 3.5 stars

Images are posted at GameBump.
I checked the sites, this is fact, not rumor.

~edit~ ratz forgot a link

Well if you make a bad game wouldn't you want to make it sound better than what it is? This doesn't matter though because most educated gamers know it's a bad game.

Wow. On top of everything else huh? That's almost too much. I'm starting to think life is parodying itself...

The site builders thought that their colleges has already bought those ratings from kotaku and gamespy. Don't blame them.

Sure, I just finished watching Heroes, so all I have to say is, "we must bring this company down!"

Does anyone also think it's a little unusual that Gamespot hasn't reported on this? I couldn't believe this story was true until I visited the official web site...man, can Game Informer and Gamespy sue?

I must say, Eidos is the new Britney Spears. Total trainwreck and kinda fun to watch them self-destruct. But please Eidos, keep wearing your panties.

I don't blame you one bit, I would not have believed it either if I had not seen it myself.
That's why I made sure to provide all the links, saved screen shots, and double checked everything first.

I made damn sure I would not look like the liar if someone tries to pull a fast one.

I believe they can. Sony Pictures was actually sued on behalf of moviegoers, and ordered to pay $1.5m a couple years back for falsifying review quotes. So I suppose that in this case not only can purchasers of K&L sue Eidos, but there're probably also opportunities for GI and Gamespy to sue for defamation. I'm just sad that I'll have to wait for a long court case to go through before I can cheer for justice.

Taking all things into concideration, This is awfully shady, I've been all over these forums for a while getting a fair view of both sides of the situation. This is what I have come up with for the defenders of eidos:

1"They never said that was a review score"

2:"Those starsare reallybullet points"

3:"Those comments were up way before the game came out, including the stars."

What I have for the attackers of eidos.

1:"There is updated information, therefore there is no reason to use the old quotes"

2:Bullet points are used to seperate different points. What are the stars being used for here?

3:"By placing 5 stars next to a comment that says the game is great, You are inviting people to assume the game got a 5 star review.

I am on the side against eidos, because It seems shady to have those comment on the main front page, shown one at a time with the stars (they even have a glowing exploding effect to the graphic) visible in front of each comment. since neither of these sources (to my knowledge) review games in stars, it looks like eidos has already been preplanning an escape tactic in case somone noticed.

EDIT: I see now that gamespy does in fact review with stars. I don't know if this helps or hurts their cause.

Well, in movie reviews, most critics use stars. However, if Gamespy only gave the game 3 stars, it makes the cynical person in me wonder what the website is implying. It's just bizarre on the whole that the site would lie about the scores.

This is worse than when publishers put selective quotes on the box. Like when a reviewer says "this game is absolute crap. However, there is a moment of beauty to be found in the first five minutes"but the box says "this game is... a... beauty"

True Gammit10, I was just putting this post together that says something similar.

I would like to add that picking a single quote out of a review to make it seem like it is a positive review is not an uncommon practice and it happens all the time. They could have easily taken this quote from the GameSpy review and used it and be doing nothing wrong. Missleading? Sure, but not a complete lie.

GameSpy quote: the story driving Kane & Lynch is one of the best you'll play this year.

Now this is of course totally out of context since the next line reads "However, the game also feels like it was pushed out for the holiday rush; its flaws are painfully evident, and for everything it does right, there's something else that feels like the butt of a gun smashed against your nose." but at least the quote would have been truthful.

The quote that was used was taken from a E3 preview and the game in reality received 3 out of 5 stars so what they did is a flat out lie.

I'm sure most educated gamers would have learnt to ignore the reviews and play the games anyway, in order to determine whether a game was over- or under-rated - especially when the reviews are varied (most sites gave Kane and Lynch a 7.0 or above).

For example, all of this recent controversy is forcing me to buy Kane and Lynch and see for myself whether all of the hate is justified.

seriously what the ****?

Are they trying to go with 'any publicity is good publicity?'

Obviously the game is not good enough to stand on it's own, so are they trying to create some kind of attention to the game? If so, wtf is the point? It still shows the game is major garbage and it ruins the company image further, which is terrible because Eidos already has not so great image by making bad Tomb Raider games for nearly a decade.

Wow thats crazy, a company claiming to have a amazing product. I always wondered why every game that games out says "Game of the year" or "Best (insert genre here) you will ever play." /sarcasm. Any self respecting gamer will try the product and not listen to reviews/raitings and find out for themselves if its whats its hyped up to be. What if agamespotreviewer said (Insert Game)was a horrible game and nobody would like it (Jeff saying on no, Kane and Lynch is terrible not worth retail, which btw i know plenty of people that love the game). If you truely believe what they say then you are simple minded, not being rude, but come on this goes on every where. Hell any movie that comes out says its the best thing on the face of theearth. In the end its the consumer that chooses how the product is rated.Damascuss

There is a significant difference between hand picking a review or even quoting a review out of context as I illustrated in a previous post and using a quote that was not in the review and openly misrepresenting the score. The K & L site says that GameSpy gave the game 5 stars when in fact they gave it 3.
Likewise they say Game Informer gave it 5 stars when in fact they gave it 7 out of 10

Its not a question of believing what they say but them lying about what someone else said.
Perhaps you missed this post.

And as for you, nice job on insulting people that actually enjoy the game. I guess since I see the game as fun makes me not apart of the educated bunch. But hey, you are one of those Jeff fanboys, what was i expecting eh?

What!? I enjoyed the games as well guess I'm un-educated as well then? If I made abad game I wouldn't go around lying through my teeth and mis-interpretating quotes from other websites, that makes them look bad.

The funny thing is that this is not such a bad game after all. It's a decent shooter with fantastic scenery and some severe problems that prevent it from reaching the top of it's genre.

All companies like to present the figures in a way that makes them or one of their products look better than it is. Even the UK government is guilty of this.

Every game, movie, etc. uses quotes/scores to make it look good regardless how it really is.
