I LOVE Lego Marvel Superheroes because of how well the story mode was done. BUT it's mess everywhere else. Poor hit detection. Absolutely lousy partner AI. Glitches like getting stuck in objects. And the rotten fixed camera. These issues, among others, plague ALL Lego games that I've played, and the developers NEVER bothered to fix any of them! It's just annoying that such fun and charming games have to be mechanical disasters.

Anyone else feel this way about Lego games at times?

I kind of agree. I'm actually shocked that more kids don't find them mind numbingly frustrating. My kids aren't old enough for them, but many of my friends who have kids play all the way through them. I find them annoying from a gameplay perspective, and I enjoy very challenging games.

Yeah... was playing Lego Batman a while back and I get stuck for the stupidest of reasons, not only are the mechanics rather stupid and inconsistent, but they also don't explain them properly either.... I didn't say anything at the time because... you know.... Local Co-Op..... I'm biased like that.

@JustPlainLucas:

You could try Disney Infinity 2.0, They also have Marvel Super Heroes, and even though they are not Legos they are toy-ish kinda looking, infact they look just like the figures they come in..... about that... I know its a bit of a gimmicky cash grab but its significantly much better Mechanically speaking compared to Lego Games..... BTW Spider-Man has the best Playset.

I dont disagree: Floaty shallow controls and movement has been plaguing the games for awhile.

Lego games' strength lies variety they offer and the assymetric co-op gameplay elements. My personal favourite is Lego: Lord of the Rings; it's suprisingly 'open-world' with elements of exploration involved more than most games in the series. I personally dislike how some Lego games hamper the co-op gameplay in favor of sticking to the events of the source material. Harry Potter did this alot, constantly taking the 2nd player out of action/gameplay/involvement.

I always thought they looked crap, but i finally gave lego city undercover a go because it looked better than others and i wanted to see what the fuss was about.

It just confirmed my suspicions :/ I don't understand why some ADULTS like these games, it boggles my mind, it's not charming like mario it's just stupid

Not that there wasn't *some* fun in there but yeah, crap gameplay and every lego game looks like it plays exactly the same.

Hmm, i can agree about the AI but i really didn´t notice any major glitches or bugs in any of the lego games i played.

So nope dont feel like that and i enjoy most lego games, its nice to have a good humoured game, i can still laugh at how they made green lantern in Lego the movie videogame... not to mention "eeeeeeeeeeeeeeverything is awesome" :D

We need more games like that who doesn't take themselves too serious.

I've only played Lego harry potter and Lego movie. The former seems fine, but the latter has its share of bugs. It's not as ironed out as it should be, and they fucked up porting it over to the PC because one of the dance sequence still has XBOX buttons appearing on screen.

I've played only the early Star Wars versions and i bought Marvel Super Heroes as something me and my son can mess around with on occasion. He's really too young at the moment though. Not so young that he cant perform basic controls but young enough that he can't understand goals and tasks that must be completed. I have SOME interest in the game but not enough to play it myself and progress through the story, unlocking more characters.

Let me just say whoever is developing games for lego is an idiot. People who enjoy legos dont want to play this shit, They want to make their own objects and worlds. I don't even understand how Minecraft could possibly have come about when legos have existed long ago and have been involved with the games industry still well before that. It just stands to reason that this concept should have been covered by lego a LONG damn time ago. Instead we get all this stupid movie/comic themed crap with adorable characters occasionally "building" any random object needed to clear an obstacle.

You are right and both Lego The Movie and pretty much all the lego games are not highly successful and have a lot of people watching and playing the games.

@amillionhp:

Exactly..... I raised this issue after I bought Disney Infinity..... when I'm building stuff in the Toy Box I always think to myself "this is exactly like Legos..... so why didn't they do it 1st ? Why aren't they doing it now.... "

Well I believe its because, as far as the Lego games have come.... they are still suffering from the stigma of Licensed Property..... and you know how those turn out..... they are not shovel ware like the good old days but games based on Licensed Material still can't go toe to toe with original games.... there literally only a handfull of exceptions like X-Men Origins Wolverine and Captain America.... maybe even Spider-Man..... (why can I only think of Marvel Games?).

I don't think we are going to get a Lego game in the vein that captures what actual Legos were really about..... not for a very long time..... so we use "Lego Surrogates" like the Aforementioned Disney Infinity and others like Little Big Planet, Minecraft, Project Spark, Hell, even Trials appearently.

It becomes a pixel hunt at times for build-able blocks, but I find them fun. I think the camera in Co-Op is terrible though.

I bought Lego Marvel Super Heroes last year, and I would buy the Lego Harry Potter Games, Lego Star Wars Original Trilogy (played Episode I-III on Gamecube), and Lego LoTR games in the future. I think they're charming and offer a lot of variety in characters.

Well, one glitch in Marvel that sticks out in my mind is when I destroyed a respawning object as Hulk, and then the object respawned on Hulk and got him stuck. No amount of "HULK SMASH" could free him. In fact, the only way to get him out was to blow up the object with the other character and kill Hulk until he finally stopped respawning into the object that was respawning on him.

Oh yeah, there's also the "push" that keeps happening when you try to build an object while you're standing too close to a ledge. Face the wrong direction, and your character will get pushed right off the ledge.

But yes, I agree we need more games that don't take themselves seriously, and Lego games excel in that regard. Also, another favorite of mine is the The Simpsons Game, because it pokes fun at all the gaming stereotypes and cliches.

It's BECAUSE I love Legos that I play these games. I love going around smashing objects and collecting studs and building kits that I remember seeing when I was a kid. Recognizing particular pieces, things like that. I think a Lego game that lets you do nothing but build would be a pretty boring game. These Lego games simply provide adventures with clever use of licensed IPs that people can simply romp through.

If thats what you want then I believe there's quite a few that do that much much better than Lego Games.....

Or is it just the Lego Skin that you find so appealing about the Lego games ?

To me, growing up with legos was always about Creativity, being able to create abd do whatever I want, Even the Lego Movie places an extreme emphasis on it, so much so that it almost ruined the movie....

Me and Amillionhp are just saying "why cant we have Lego Games that capture that same spirit of creativity? "

Well, the Lego skin does have a lot of charm for me. It's easy to overlook the games' shortcomings, because obviously, I'm still playing them. But I get what you're saying. It would be nice to have Lego builder games for people who simply want to build and create. There are Minecraft Legos coming out... so why not a Lego Minecraft?

Oh i would fully expect an actual game to come about in conjunction with the building mechanic. That said, i'm aware that we couldn't really have a completely functional game comparable to the typical everyday variety while also maintaining an extensive building mechanic. In other words, some give and take would have to occur between the two concepts. That is fine. Minecraft manages to give us a survival mode that populates a world that is fully customizable.

Here is what i would suggest for a lego game concept. Separate the games by the themes they are sold as toys. Drop the licensing garbage for a bit and instead work with original lego themes.

So in other words for a "Lego City" themed game, i would probably go with something that uses sandbox elements like GTA but instead of running around stealing and killing, maybe they could focus gameplay on a rescue mission sort of thing involving fire, police, hospital, coast guard stations and so forth. Add a construction team and incorporate simcity building mechanics along side it and you've pretty much got a decent game there. Just make sure all buildings/vehicles thrown up by the player are 100% custom built from scratch instead of pre designated. There doesn't have to be a lot of them and they could add an unlock mechanic for greater variety/amount of pieces available depending on progress through the game.

Castle series should be easy enough to make. A typical RPGish type with adventure/RTS elements thrown in. This one should be so easy i dont think a lengthy explanation is required for ideas. We already have so many games like this. Just none that have fully customizable armies and fortresses. Again same as what i proposed with the City game, we don't need the entire world fully customizable. Just the player controlled faction armies and a few castles/structures and call it a day. Completing adventures/quests will yield more options on the building mechanic giving players incentive to continue through the game.

If i'm not mistaken, i do believe there were Lego mmos that were attempted and failed. I'm not sure how many other lego games there really are besides the recent licensed ones. Or what kind of customization all of them offered if any.

Lego City Undercover's the closest to that, without the creative building element. Also, I do believe there was a PC game that let you build whatever you wanted called Lego Island? Not sure it did well. I'm also somewhat certain that Lego already knows they have an established audience for the games they're making now and probably don't want to compete with the juggernaut that is Minecraft.

@JustPlainLucas:

They are not really going to be directly competing with Minecraft. Minecraft is about collecting resources to build up a completely customizable world. The only real gameplay associated with it is a survival mode aside from pure gathering.

To begin with, Legos have detailed pieces that would significantly cut back on what Minecraft would otherwise require many blocks arranged in a certain way. There are also lego characters to collect and customize. Other functional vehicles like cars and helicopters. Minecraft doesn't offer anything like this for players to create.

I don't think Lego needs to be concerned about competing with Minecraft as long as it isn't too similar. What i'm suggesting and what i think many lego enthusiasts would appreciate is quite different.

If thats the case then they're main nemesis would be Disney Infinity, although the Infinity games have onr gigsntic flaw, Lego can shoot past them pretty quickly if they solve it first, Little Big Planet 3 already sorted this issue out, but the game being buggy and exclusive means theres still hope for Kego to set themselves apart.

Man, I gotta say I love playing Lego games. I agree with all the problems people have brought up. They definitely exist...but so what man. They're hella fun, especially the co-op, and especially as a way for me and my son to play together for nothing but pure fun. We played together first when the first Indiana Jones game came out...like 5 years ago? Some of the best times ever. So I really couldn't give a rip if the hit detection isn't the best. Fun is fun, and that's all it should be about.
