I thought this might be a fun and interesting thread for us.

Each of us shares a strange game, accessory, controller, or console from gaming's history. Give us a brief description or history on the item, and preferably a picture to go with it so we can see this oddity from years gone by, and then let another person do the same. This would work much like our "Top 100" lists.

Rules:

  • Please post only 1 item per post.
  • Please allow others to post before posting another item.

So, let's see what we can learn about together. I'll go first:

1. The Aura Interactor Virtual Reality Game Wear accessory for Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo

Interactor

If you wear this, supposedly you can feel the pain when your character onscreen is attacked. Right, because that would be awesome. dohWho's the guy sitting around the conference table going "Wouldn't be great if when your kicked in the game, it actually kicks your arse?" I bet he was in Fight Club (we don't talk about Fight Club). I've never actually used one, but from what I hear, it's nothing but a plastic vest that has a rumble-feature.

Nintendo e-Reader.... reads cards so you can get extra content in games for the GBA or play full games. I had one for some reason back in the day. Still have a couple of the Pokemon cards, but not the device itself. It allowed you to play games you've played hundreds of times already, or get some "DLC" onto your game.

  1. The Aura Interactor Virtual Reality Game Wear accessory for Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo
  2. Nintendo e-Reader for Gameboy Advance
  3. AlphaGrip AG-5 PC Gaming and Text Entry Controller

Controller

This monstrosity was supposed to make using your PC easier by doing your email or spreadsheets with the ease of a gaming controller, and double as an actual gaming pad at the same time. Just look at the pic, do I need to explain why it failed?

The Nintendo 64 Bio Sensor:

Pretty darn stupid if you ask me.... and they attempted to bring back a similar product with the Wii. Only compatible with Tetris IIRC, but still lame how desperate Nintendo can get. In Tetris, it will change the speed of the blocks depending on your heart rate.

Less obscure than some of this stuff but I'll pick the R.O.B. for NES. Seems like a cool idea but it was about as much fun as watching the floors change on an elevator.

  4. N64 Bio Sensor
  5. R.O.B. the Robot for NES
  6. Trance Vibrator for PS2
    trance

A "Special Package" version of the PlayStation 2 release of the game was sold in Japan only, including a USB device called a Trance Vibrator, which pulses in time with the music. The intended use of the device would be to hold it, put it in a pocket, or sit on it while playing (a pouch was provided to protect the device); similar to the DualShock, it would vibrate in time with the music, but stronger than the DualShock's own feedback, helping to extend the synesthesia to the player's feeling of touch. While not explicitly marketed as a sex toy or masturbatory aid, it has reportedly been used as such[8]; in fact, in 2007, ScrewAttack ranked the Trance Vibrator the #1 best gaming peripheral in its "Best Gaming Peripherals" for this reason.[9] The devices are available from various aftermarket retailers for (as of 2006) approximately $60 USD. The trance vibrator is also compatible with Space Channel 5: Part 2 and the Japanese version of Disaster Report.
Reverse-engineering efforts to allow the Trance Vibrator to attach to and be controlled by a PC have been successfully executed in Japan, resulting in a device driver for Microsoft Windows XP and Windows 2000. Sam Hocevar also wrote a driver which is part of the Linux kernel.[10]
The Xbox 360 version, Rez HD, uses up to three additional controllers for the trance vibration functionality in the game.

Hey, I have one of those.

I can't really think of any strange accesories, just games. This one is particular...

It may not be as uncommon as other stuff on this thread, but it's definetly a strange bird. Very early motion-controls.

The ColcoVision Atari Converter.

Expansion Module No. 1

Expansion Module No. 1 allows all cartridges compatible with the Atari 2600 VCS to be played on CBS ColecoVision console.
When the Expansion Module is plugged into the Expansion Module Interface, the widest possible library og video game cartridges can be played on the CBS ColecoVision system.

Alternatively, existing Atari owners can purchase the CBS ColecoVision videogame system and still make use of their existing software library.

Game play can be controlled using CBS ColecoVision game controllers which plug into the Expansion Module No. 1.

----====----

Coleco Industries was quick to release their Atari Converter For ColecoVision.
They find out that Atari Not have patented their Atari 2600 Videogame system.

Yeah, imagine if Nintendo released an add-on that would allowed you to play Sega games on the SNES. Lawsuits would be sent left and right.

Surprised noone mentioned this but the

power pad

this was my first foray into motion controls as a kid. It's more like pressure sensitive controls where you step on the pad and the onscreen character responded. I played an olympic game with my family alot with this thing.

Wii Fit before it was cool! I played the hell out of Track and Field back in the day so I just didn't think of the Power Pad as being weird.

How about the Bandai Super Controller? It was just this shell that went over the top of an ordinary NES paddle.

Another one I dreally think of as weird. Everyone had one! They had 'em for other systems too but the NES one was the coolest by far. For SNES and Genesis it was mostly like "Start out w/ ten extra lives" but the NES had stuff like "Super mega ultra jumps where you never land and can hop off into bizzarro world" and all manner or weirdness.

I had a set of these that were VERY similar, but instead of a ball-top joystick, it was just a stick.

The Super Scope for Duck hunt. This thing is supposed to be a bazooka though you can't tell the size from this picture. I've never mangaged to actually hit the duck with this gun. This and the light gun were really Nintendo's first big motion techonology even though there was no motion tracker in them.

Not for Duck Hunt. Wasn't even on the NES. It was for the SNES. And the PowerGlove on NES was actual motion-control used before this on the NES. I always wanted one as a kid, and would still love one. But from what I've heard, the PowerGlove worked terribly.

Man, some of the games that were played with this accessory were awesome. I LOVED battleclash.......and its sequel... fighting Giant mechs with weak points and attack patterns..... and the game that came with it was pretty challenging too. Super Scope Six i believe it was called. came with six mini games and a bonus that you unlocked. awesome arcade action. you seriously felt like a BADASS with this thing on your shoulder as a kid. oh, and check out the games i mentioned on emulator, they support the super scope and the SNES mouse.

My sister's and I had a lot of fun with that game. It gave kids a lot of neat toys back before computers were commonplace. In the last couple of years I've discovered that people have done some really cool stuff with the composer making fun little versions of songs like Thriller and Final Countdown, even medleys of videogame music through the years.

LOL it was way ahead of it's time. I remember having a blast with the whacking mosquito game. It included the WORST mousepad ever created though.
