i have been gaming(pc) since 98 and i cannot remember a year which can beat 98.2007 has a lot of great titles ut there are rehases and sequals.for me 98 would be an immortal year for gaming esp pc gaming.my pc cant play games of this generation and the last game i played was stalker so i dont know what game innovations have been for this year.

I know still 2.5 months are left but we know what to expect from the demos you have played.

in order

1 1998

2 2007

3 2004

ps:what hapened to poll option.

You can't do polls in General Games Discussion. If people answer just the year and don't justify it, this thread will get locked.

This question should be asked when the year is over.

I suspect 2008 will trump them all, but that is because I am an unrepentant MGS and GTA fan.

We should wait until the years up, maybe some of these upcoming games might not be so good.

I honestly think 2001 beats all three.

2001- Halo, Zelda: Oracle of Ages and Oracle of Seasons, Paper Mario, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Castlevania: Circle of the Moon, Ico, Devil May Cry, Golden Sun, Star Wars Rogue Squadron II, Super Smash Bros. Melee, Final Fantasy X

But to stay with your choices, I guess I would go with 2007. I was looking through my collection on IGN based on release dates, and overall, none of those years are clear cut to me, based on what I like and own. I'm giving it to 2007 because God of War II, Metroid Prime 3, RE 4: Wii Edition, Halo 3 (multiplayer), Super Paper Mario, Tomb Raider Anniversary, and Lost Planet were all games I was very happy with.

Third Strike, right Catalyst? Would love to hear what you think about the SF4 announcement.

I would have to go with '98. Very, VERY few bad games were released whilist many, MANY great games were released (MGS, Gran Turismo etc0.

But hey, 2008's definitely looking like a great year to be a gamer...

3rd Strike, Grandia (US), lots of great early Dreamcast games, PlayStation in its prime...

Anyway, I posted on the SFIV thread. Wake me up when we have a developer and gameplay footage.

i think 1997-1999 would be the best ever, because of all the groundbreaking games that happened at that time. FFVII shook up the RPG genre and Half-Life redifined FPS's, not to mention the birth of the Tony Hawk Pro Skater franchise, and some of even the over-looked games and game systems had some good titles out for them, like the Dreamcast with Shenmue. I just think 97-99 shaped gaming as what we know it today.

Umm... what? Really? Your comparing one of the greatest years in gaming history to this year and another pretty okay one? Wow...
  • Resident Evil 2
  • Parasite Eve
  • StarCraft
  • Warhammer: Dark Omen
  • Unreal
  • Banjo-Kazooie
  • Metal Gear Solid
  • Fallout 2
  • Pokémon Red and Blue
  • Grim Fandango
  • Xenogears
  • Half-Life
  • The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
  • StarCraft: Brood War
  • Thief: The Dark Project
  • Baldur's Gate
  • Turok 2: Seeds of Evil

I don't need to say anything... the games say it all.

1998 had 'landmark' games in just about every genre:

FPS - Half-Life
RTS - Starcraft
Stealth - Thief, MGS
Action-Adventure - Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Banjo Kazooie (more of a platformer, but whatever)
Adventure - Grim Fandango
RPG - Baldurs Gate, Fallout 2
...and others.

Most of these games are genre-defining, and few have been topped since then, so I'd say 1998 had the most 'best games'.

Yeah, 1998, out of the three years listed. If only for Grim Fandango, and Half Life. It may have been one of the richest years ever, but IMO it was not one of the most important ones.
