The game actually forces you to choose between ordering a bacon omelette or a belgian waffle.

Here's the clip:

You actually have a third choice if it offends you: don't play. It's a game, get over it.

Vegans are an insult against humanity.

Get over yourself, choosing to go against your nature and not eat meat does not make you special.

It's arguably not in our nature to eat meat, because humans are herbivore. But even if that was not the case, it by no means excuses the cruelty that occurs regularly at factory farms, cruelty that should not be supported in any way by anyone.

If you want to eat meat, go out and hunt for it instead of paying the death camp industry to do the dirty work for you. (while pretending it's in actually in your nature to buy rinsed, refrigerated flesh packed in stryofoam and loaded with antibiotics)

In real life, you could order something else from the menu or just not eat there at all, neither of those are options in this particular diner scene. Not even a "I'm not hungry" or "maybe later" which would have seemed like reasonable script choices for this sort of game. But it seems they were weirdly hell bent on putting animal product in Maxine's mouth and, more to the point, making YOU responsible for it. The point is they are very, very passive-aggressively denying that vegans even exist, or that animal welfare is even an issue. This, in a game that is trying to be a serious drama about moral choices and their consequences, and in a realistic setting.

I think making a new thread should require a $10 deposit, which you only get back 6 months later if the thread wasn't stupid.

If the protagonist isn't vegan, and the food isn't real, why should anyone care?

If you want to play a vegan character, go play Dungeons of Dredmor instead.

The Belgian waffle would contain milk and eggs, making it a no go for vegans, right? And I suppose any animal in captivity is an animal in captivity too many? Even actual free range animals aren't allowed? You know, eggs and milk from chickens and cows with plenty of space and good care...?

Also, it is important to realize this character is not you, nor is she your creation. She's merely someone you control in a limited way. She's her own person and she apparently isn't vegan. You'll have to accept her personal traits, otherwise you could potentially complain about and demand to change everything that relates to her character.

Plus, a game about moral choices and their consequences is not a game about ALL moral choices and their consequences. There's only so much you can fit into a story. I do agree that "I'm not hungry" would be a pretty reasonable and logical option (especially since she seems to be there to meet someone, not necessarily to eat), but I don't think your particular reasoning is enough to justify a change.

"You know, eggs and milk from chickens and cows with plenty of space and good care...?" <-- Yes, I'm sure the animals used to make this one particular breakfast were well taken care of. They obviously built an entire farm just for this one breakfast. It's a fictional story so you never know.

"Plus, a game about moral choices and their consequences is not a game about ALL moral choices and their consequences." <-- That's because the game devs evidently didn't see it as a moral issue. To the game's credit it does seem to tackle some issues such as abuse. (which I find interesting about the game) I guess that's partly because the game is made in the present day, and those are the issues and subjects that exist in our vernacular. If the game was made long enough ago, slaves might have been waiting on Maxine in that diner and she probably wouldn't have given it much objection, since it would have nothing to do with the plot to have her do otherwise.

What a bunch of utter nonsense.

Who have given you the idiotic idea that humans are not by nature intended to eat meat? Because who ever have given you that idea needs to get his biology 101, history 101 money back or at least retake those courses.

I sense a bit of sarcasm there and that's understandable, but well, as you say, it's a fictional story, so it might be a little easier to simply imagine all the eggs and milk came from animals living a good life...

Yeah, I can imagine animal welfare is not on everyone's awareness list. It's relatively easy to ignore and that's of course disappointing. But I doubt the "I'm not hungry" option would make people think about animal welfare. I don't think it'll make them consider the consequences of what food they eat, because the setting in question is too casual and the subject isn't part of the narrative. So I'm afraid only people who are vegan or invested in animal welfare will notice it, which would make it ineffective as an in-game example of a moral choice.

Man, I agree with you, but A) is this the place to preach? A gaming forum? B) by pointing out trivial matters such as a dialog choice in a videogame, you undermine and ridicule your cause and plea. C) Humans are not herbivore, they are omnivore. As a vegetarian of 17 years myself, I have always admitted that I am the exception to the rule, not the other way around.

Choose your battles, or you'll end up chasing the wind.

Anyone may be forgiven for thinking this is just a game....silly me for not realising it is a soapbox for real world commentary..

I think we should also chastise those people that are against people constantly rewinding time, nothing but trouble those people much worse than arguing against veganism.

Stop the mistreatment of time rewinders !

Agreed, that was some solid advice! And it's cool to know that your a vegetarian because I have thought about doing it myself.

About 85% of my diet is made up organic foods and chicken and fish are the only meats I consume! I might eat a steak once a month(Moooooo @popeanonymousxv) but it's nothing I can't live without.

Rather than allowing this game of choice and consequence to play out naturally you have come out all guns blazing making judgements and claiming that somehow a particular group are being victimised.

So perhaps by getting your knickers in a twist before the story has played out in its entirety you are in fact proving yourself to be just as ignorant and insulting as you claim the devs of this game series are being. For all you know episode 3 could centre entirely on this dietary choice and we could find ourselves freeing abused animals as part of a storyline.

My personal opinion is that this game is a work of fiction and should be treated as such. Fiction is fictitious!!!!!!! and therefore holds no obligation to appease every facet of humanity that interacts with it. If every story was equally fair to every aspect of human variation then a story would be impossible to tell.

Nitpicking is fun. Maybe the character isn't vegan or the restaurant doesn't have vegan options. Boom problem solved.

This thread reminds me of a situation me and some of my friends were in a few years back. We were huffing down some tacos outside of Taco Bell after a night of wine, women and song. These two emaciated looking fellows walked up and started harassing us, saying we were to blame for animals being slaughtered and all that jazz.

We asked them politely to leave us alone, hung over and tired as we were. They kept getting closer and closer, pointing fingers and yelling at us. One of my pals stopped eating his beef taco, opened it up and smeared it in one of the dude's faces. He just started crying and ran off. Funniest thing ever.

This thread is either one of two things:

1) A trolling attempt

2) A discussion of the merits of being Vegan.

Either way, it doesn't belong in GD so I'm locking it. Thanks.
