it's an idea for a game I have. Think about it. Your character starts out in school, where the enemies are math problems and such, and bosses are tests, while minibosses are quizzes. Then when they get older, your character has to battle their checkbook and bills with money and things like that. A silly idea, I know, but what do you think of this? Would it work or not?

It'd be funny to see as a flash game, but I don't see anyone taking something like that seriously :P

I once joked with my friend about an RPG set throughout 13 years of public schooling. Bullies, teachers and wild animals were the foes, while you banded together with friends. Every year you'd be granted access to new gameplay mechanics, all relating to various subjects you take.

That was a fun waste of time.

I've actually had this sort of concept floating around in my head for quite some time.

How would you get this to work? Would it be first-person? Would it be an MMO (or at least multiplayer, with each server being a school?) How would dialouge work?

The ideas I've come up with so far:

Skills separated into three main categories; academic, social, and physical.

The skills would be things like "Math Proficiency", "Proactivity" (the higher it is, the less likely you are to procrastinate. You might even get homework done during school), "Quick Thinking" (which would allow better conversation options), "Running Speed", and so forth.

You would move up or down a scale in terms of social popularity with the teachers and students (seperately) depending on your conversations and such.

Classes would be handled either by a cutscene based off of your skillset, or merely skippable (and you could view the results afterward somehow).

Bathroom needs would be handled not by a meter, but by subtle indicators. There's really no way to indicate pain in first-person other than a red outline or saying "oww" outloud, so I would do that.

Grinding for tests would be studying (devoting your time at home or at free periods in school instead of other things).

Tests themselves would be the same as classes, and you get the results back later (just like in real life).

What's kind of sad about all this is that we're discussing making a game about real life as realistically as possible, when we use games as a means to escape real life. :P

Same here.

TC, it sounds like a nice idea but I don't think it'd gel properly. Might be a good idea for Facebook though :)

People dont to play a game on what they currently have. They want to play a life where they cannot regret the decision to marry their highschool boyfriend, or are still working at taco bell after 5 year, or that they live in their parents basements because they cant afford to move out.

Hence why the Sims is so popular.

If you have to play Life the RPG, avoid the public school development tree. It drops your intelligence stat to borderline levels.

Part of that reminds me of the Persona series - at least, the school part and the daily routine. I think that it needs an injection of some other element to keep it interesting, though.

Well, I don't know about you, but demon hunting, the end of the world and supernatural murders are pretty routine to me.

Games like that already sort of exist, i.e. Persona, Shenmue, dating sims, visual novels, etc.

Well, let's say each class in a grade is a dungeon, and math problems are enemies and such. Bosses are tests. It would play like an RPG, but the presentation is like a test or something.

Anyways, this was just an idea, I'm not serious about it or anything. Just a weird idea I had one day.

Someone will steal this and somehow make it an actual game now. Never give away your inventions. Lol. On a side note, I think the idea has been drawn out through the SIMS series. I understand it's not EXACTLY what you originally mentioned, but it's not much different either. Also, there are already enough "learning games" out there that would only make it different by adding a character of your likeness into the game. If you actually have to KNOW the answers, then a lot of people aren't gonna play it. If you just have to pretend to know the info, then people would like it more, but I still don't see much difference between that and the SIMS or Digimon stuff from back in the day.

If that's the case, then I remember playing a game sort of like that a long time ago on the Sega Master System called Alex Kidd: High-Tech World. In that game, you explore a castle (kind of like a dungeon), where you walk into different rooms and have to answer questions or solve puzzles about school subjects like maths or general knowledge (kind of like battles). After eventually leaving the castle though, the gameplay changes to become more like a standard platform RPG.
