lol. I'd say 5 years is fair.

Yahoo story

I think she should serve the exact amount of time the guy actually spent in-game(max 5 years).

I have played other mmo's and this has happened a few times lol. Only it was more karma than revenge. People would share info and use it to cheat. So when one person would get mad they would log onto the other persons account and delete the characters. We never called it "murder", its more destruction of personal property(heh maybe virtual murder lol, but that raises legal ramifications of virtual suicide when you delete a character yourself and dont even mention all the virtual pro-life religious freaks). But I guess in a way it is.

In that yahoo story's example the guy didnt really do anything to deserve losing his character. How much REAL LIFE time did he waste on it?? I think destroying something somebody else spent alot of time on making SHOULD be compensated for whether it was virtual or in real life.

The fact that this is a virtual character is inconsequential. If you destroy someone's personal property you have to pay for it. Some of these virtual things are pretty valuable, I've heard of people selling things for hundreds and even thousands of dollars.

I agree with the ruling. He invested five years of his life into this game, god only knows how much money on subscription fees (and possible RMT)...at that point you have a legitimate property with a substantial time and money investment involved.

So when considering punishment for the destruction of legitimate property, you have to take into account the time put into it and the money spent on it. She should do five years and have to pay up five years worth of subscription fees, at the very least.

If I spent 5 years writing a novel and my women decided to destroy all my work id be pissed. Or if I spent 5 years making a movie, or whatever. Destruction of valued property is a crime, its just most people dont view an online character that way when they should. I don't even like MMOS but I gotta feel for the guy. Serves her right.

This is a ridiculous, he was in contact with her for a long time and they were married in-game. ANYWAY, if Maple Story can't roll back the character TOO BAD. This has happened plenty of times before and there is no legal action. Maple Story should just give him his character back from what he remembers (They are the ones who make the money on their frivolous doo dads you can buy for $). Lastly jail time shouldn't even be considered.

some people need real LIFE!

maybe both of them should be arrested for wasting police's time...

Well if you take out the "game" part of the story, then it makes little bit more sense.

The article wrote that she "killed" the game character, and I'm thinking what actually happened was she deleted his character.

Anyway the point is that she damaged someone else's property that she didn't have any rights to. It would be similar to her coming into your home and breaks a TV.

The laws broken here have to do with unauthorized access to a computer system, a very serious crime. What she did falls into the category of hackers that steal bank account info or company secrets... she just had a different goal for logging into someone else's account. Just because the account she accessed was a game rather than a bank account or something doesn't change the fact that she broke the law, which has the benalty of up to 5 years in prison.

The loss the guy suffered would be handled in civil court, not criminal court, where he could sue for damages but not jailtime. At least, that's how it would work here.

Lets say his hobby was fixing up old cars.

He's been working on a particular car for five years and he's pumped lots of money into it. One day his girlfriend gets pissed and smashes the car up. Is it a waste of time to call the police? Is the guy crazy because he wants retribution for the destruction of his property?

Of course not. It shoudn't make any difference that this is a vitual character.

Wow, this is hilarious.

But seriously, the police have every right to arrest her for hacking the game. Mind, I don't think she should be severely punished at all.
