I spent years trying to finish teh first King's Quest, and yet it's beatable in under 2 hours.
I'm still going to nominated Daggerfall. First time through took 6 months of playing an average of 3 hours a day.
I bought Viewtiful Joe the day it came out and have been stuck on the final boss since then, so I guess four years and counting for that one. I recently tried it again after not having played it for a couple years. I have the other boss fights down to a science so I don't know why I can't figure that fight out; it makes me feel really stupid every time I try it (don't tell me the strat plz, would suck to give up now :D ) I have also never beaten Frozen Throne or Starcraft Brood War simply out of laziness. I'm good enough at SC to finish the final level (I'm on the very last level) but I have just never finished it and I don't know why, which is weird since SC is one of my favorite games of all time. Those three are the only ones I can think of that I still actually want to finish.
Final Fantasy VIII and The Legend of Dragoon took me a few years to beat, although I didn't play them non-stop like I would today. KOTOR I & II also took me a while to beat and even longer to beat it with both light and dark side endings. Star Ocean: Till the end of Time was also ridiculously long, but I think all the mentioned games are spectacular and deserve to be played through at least once.
There's plenty of PC games that can be stretched out to last insane amounts of time, but if you're looking for a console game with a definitive ending then you'd be looking at Dragon Warrior/Quest VII. If you k now what you're doing, zip through it without hitting the casinos or taking up a single side-quest (of which there are many), you might be able to finish it in about 75 to 80 hours. However if you're playing itwithout a strategy guide and take some mild interest in the side quests there's no way to finish it in less than 100 hours. If you take on the final challenge that's available after winning the game tack on another 10 hours too.
First time I played it I remember when I finally finished the first disc and I looked at the game's clock and it said I'd played for 75 hours. I got scared knowing I still had another disc to go.
I have to go with DQ VIII as well. I got it when it was released...played it about halfway through and then got bored.
I picked it up again last month and I'm pretty close to being finished. If I can't figure out what's happening or what to do/where to go in a day, I drop it. I judge.
Oblivion took me 100 hours to see the end of the story, but that's because of all the side quests i did in the process..
Xenogears, Tales of Symphonia (both 45 hours to see the end) and Baten Kaitos (60-70 hours) are some of the games that took me more time to beat... and what great games they were:D
If you counted up all the times I've played through Castlevania IV, I'm sure the number would be staggering. Here are the games that stand out as "longest" to me subjectively, though:
Blood Omen 2. Tiny nuggets of good voice acting and storyline that ties into the rest of the Legacy of Kain universe surrounded by hours and hours of uninspiring gameplay. Just remember that it was never intended as a LoK game originally--it was originally a new Chakan game that had Kain crammed in at the last minute.
Final Fantasy VII. Oh. My. God. I played more than 40 hours into this game looking for the fun. It felt like 40 years with the lame, hackneyed dialog, uninteresting characters, constant random battles, and the endlessly repeated summon animations. Finally I realized that there just wasn't any enjoyment to be had in the game and quit, but not before losing hours of my life I'll never get back.
Hmm, well to get through the main story I would say FFXII took me the longest at 65 hours, no side quests involved.
Most time I've put into a game besides an MMO would probably be Pokemon Ruby which I've put over 200 hours into...
Just speaking in general though what game has taken me the longest real life time to beat? Well I got Baten Kaitos and started it the day it came out in 2004 and I am still sitting in the last dungeon as of today...
I think it's Baldur's Gate II.
Final Fantasy VII was big too.
I playing Neverwinter nights at the moment and don't seem to be getting anywhere and it's been 5 hours since I gained a level. I think this is going to be a lonnnnggg gameas well.
