I think the gen could last a while longer. I'm thinking 2013 at the earliest for the next gen consoles to be released (not just announced). Part of that is the fact that the consoles either already are expanding, or are going to expand the things they can do with certain accessories.
Wii has the Ballance Board and Wii Motion Plus. The Ballance Board has been used in certain games, but I think there's still a lot that can be done with it. Sega's testing the waters with its new Super Monkey Ball game, which seems like an interesting idea, and I am looking forward to seeing what else can be done with it in the future. And of course, Wii Motion Plus will give devs much more flexibility in terms of what they'll be able to accomplish with their games in terms of motion controls. I'm reluctant to even mention this, because I honestly have no idea how it could be used in games, or what Nintendo's intent with it is, but there's also the Vitality Sensor... :P
As for PS3 and 360, both of those consoles have their own interesting additions coming out in the future. Natal seems like it is an interesting idea which, if used well enough, could make an interesting addition to the console. For example, after seeing what they did with Milo, I was thinking about how interesting it would be if they could somehow create a game along the lines of Fable using that to intereact with the people in the world. PS3 also has its own version of motion controls coming out, and I'd like to see what they do with those to change or enhance their games.
Overall, even without these additions, I could see this gen going for a bit longer than expected. The different systems do seem to still have enough potential to last a while longer, for devs to work with the system to create some interesting new games, or sequels to old ones. But with these additions, I wouldn't be surprised if it continued through 2013 or maybe even a bit longer.
