Hello all.

So lately I've been playing a lot of Fallout New Vegas. I'm the kind of player that gets bored of his character build or archetype not even half-way through the game and feels like restarting, but whenever I do, I have to do the same story over again and this happens a lot.

So for my question: Can anyone recommend an RPG game to me (Preferably one with character progression like fallout) that can feel "fresh" whenever I start a new game or let me redesign my character mid-game, has a story that can be done in different ways, or that has game or story progression that won't feel linear?

Thanks in advance

If changing your character build mid game is really that important... Mass Effect Andromeda. You can put whatever points you want into any class you want or as many different classes that you want and you can reassign points from your ships med bay. However the story does seem pretty linear and I don't think there is anything you can do to have very different outcomes.

Hmmmmm I can't think of any pure RPGs like that.

If you're looking for "fresh from the start" games, however, I might suggest "rogue-like" games as they are pretty much focused on dying and then restarting.

I know that Borderlands offer the possibility of spending your points on different skills but it cost some cash to do so. You can alter the look the of the caracter. You can't choose a different caracter.

Yeah i would recommend Persona 5 since there are many activities or event that might be missed when you are playing it for the first time.

Mass effect 1&2 felt very fresh when played with different gender and profession.

Skyrim always feels fresh to me.

Fallout 4 is better than the previous Fallout games in this: In F4, close combat tank is actually viable option as a character build, and I had masses of fun playing a juggernaut with a uber power fist and lots of close combat perks. You know you are on the right path when you can beat alpha deathclaw to pulp with your fists!

Also, stealth works well too in F4 as a tactic, if you want to focus on stealth perks. And so on. Also, you can stick with different companion in each new play of F4, which further makes each play totally different.

With Dragon Age Inquisition and Mass Effect Andromeda there is not much difference between roles. The games felt the same for me even with totally different roles for the main character...

Dragon Age Origins was lot better. In it, your chosen role made big difference and kept the game fresh.

Dragon Age Inquisition should suit you although you can't change your character mid way.

Persona 5 or Skyrim. Can't really change the latter halfway through, but so much scope for different storylines

Agreed. Persona 5 or Skyrim. Also recommend The Witcher 3 but you can't change character. There's a lot of story and side quests and you can tackle them however you want, though.

Fable lets you build your character any way you want. Theres really no limits, the more exp you gain the more you can learn, by the end you will be able to be a power warrior brute but also a powerful mage

You didn't list your gaming preferences.

I would point to MMOs like Guild Wars 2 that let you respec at will. Also, you can level a character in a lot of different ways. You can mix in pvp or stay straight PvE. But even if you only do PvE there are so many maps and regions each with their own set of unique events, you need not repeat a single quest outside of the intro while leveling multiple characters.

If ARPGs are your thing, you can try Marvel Heroes Omega, which is now on consoles, though the PC version is quite a bit better. It's a good free to play model as it only requires you to pay for vanity items. With respect to what you're asking for, there are multiple ways to level in this game as well and it's generally pretty quick to hit max level, as the majority of the game focuses on gearing and post-leveling bonuses. Respecing is always free.

Neither of these really features a strong story, although GW2 really does try, with seasonal story updates that are free as along as you log in some time after they go live and before the next phase begins. If you want story and endless respec, that's fairly rare. Andromeda is the most recent example, but as with most story based RPGs, quests are on rails, so you're going to be repeating yourself a lot. Elderscrolls and Fallout are the most free in the latter regard.

If you just want to change the look of your character, most MMOs offer those options, but usually on a pay basis. Games like Fallout and Skyrim, you can do it any time you like on PC just by pulling up the race menu. Hit the tilde key then type "showracemenu."

@babaloofang: You'll always get a different last boss in Dragon's Dogma if you play it online. You can also choose different allies on the fly (Pawns) along with playing as a variety of playstyles. Even though it's bottom tier my favorite is the Warrior class, but everything is fun.

Beating BitterBlack Isle the first time is only stage one of the island, as it will 'change' the second time around.

Ur Dragon hunts are addictive and invite a ton of replay-value, it has online and offline modes. I recommend fighting it online.

*I have two maxed out Arisens on the game. . I enjoyed it too much lol.

Roguelikes may be what you are looking for. Ancient Domains of Mystery comes to mind, since the world, and even item properties are randomly generated each time.

There are 20 classes in the game to choose from. Each game, you are also given random bonuses at start. By that virtue alone, you may in fact be encouraged to try a different playstyle every game.

Ancient Domains of Mystery allows you to start as a mage, and train as a warrior later down the line, to become a warrior with some spellcasting ability if you so damn please.
