My birthday is coming in a month and my parents agree to get me an PC gaming laptop.

I know what your saying, "BUILD YOUR OWN" I don't want to and I feel like a PC gaming laptop is a good way into getting PC gaming.

So the budget is between 500-1000 dollars, and looking for a good gaming laptop that will last me 5 plus years.

Thank You!

Finding a good gaming laptop for under $1000 is a hard task. You would almost certainly have to make compromises. Perhaps hold off a month or few to save more moneys? Then you could grab something like the Asus G75VW for around $1200 (do shop around for a better deal when the time comes). Of course, even then there are drawbacks, but you'll get plenty of fun out of it.

I agree with Lhomity, ASUS laptops seem to make pretty good gaming laptops, not to mention they are the biggest manufacturers of motherboards in the world, so if anyone would know how to build a laptop around their own hardware, its them.

My ASUS K53E has an 2nd gen i5 processor (4CPUs) ~2.3GHz, 6GB DDR3, and Intel integrated HD Graphics 3000

That is by no means impressive, after all I didn't buy it with gaming in mind, yet I am able to play some slightly taxing games like Portal 1 & 2, Banner Saga, Minecraft, Antichamber, Bastion, Hotline Miami, Scribblenauts with almost no overheating, provided the vents aren't being covered up.

Also, as Lhomity said, anything under $1000 isn't going to last you the 5 years you want if you plan on playing the very latest games. Here's a slightly more powerful model for a few bucks more: link.

So yeah, I vote ASUS :p

Don't do it! Build a desktop or you'll regret it. Paying similar price for 50% performance and not being able to triple your performance later on for the price of a 200 dollar gpu upgrade is the biggest waste of money in gaming that I can think of.

Just because you want it, that doesn't necessarily mean it exists. ;)

A $1000 laptop won't play modern games maxed -today-, much less games 5 years from now. I've owned several and generally if you want something that can hang with a desktop then you are going to be spending closer to the 2k and up mark.

What kind of games are you talking about? The new Haswell CPUs come with HD4400s and up depending on the model and those might be enough depending on the kinds of games you want to play, but otherwise you'll have to go with a discrete GPU model which will increase the size/price. What size laptop were you looking to get?

Go for Asus if you can't find a sub-1000 alienware, they focus on a laptop's gaming performance more than other companies hence their "Republic of Gamers" line. My Vivobook was 600 and it plays games like gta4, assassins creed, sims, mass effect on medium to high settings no problem.

Pretty much this, especially if you and your family are on a budget. It's the rational choice for anyone who ain't a Hollywood hot shot, or just plain stupid.

I would advise against gaming laptops. Buy/build a desktop PC for gaming.

Try out some different asus ones however one that I would recommend is the Lenovo G700 17.3-Inch Laptop, its got all requirements for gaming, its fast and easy to use and its around $600-$700, I'm using this now and its one word: wicked. It definitely beats my crappy desktop before :)

This, not to mention that gaming laptops are notorious for overheating very quickly. It's just not worth putting down the money for one when you can get way more out of a custom-built PC for the same price.
