I’ve decided that I’m looking for games that aren’t necessarily straight-up platformers, but rather ones that are mixed with beat ‘em ups, or have more action.

I wouldn’t necessarily mind just an action platformer, 2d or not, but a game I looked up that really caught my eye recently was Jackie Chan: Stuntmaster for ps1. It looks like a really fun mix of Beat ‘em up and platforming. Whatever you call it, the game looked fun.

I didn’t really find many games that were like it though. Gekido: urban fighters looked cool, but seems like more of a straight beat ‘em up

The first game that comes to mind is Shank. Guacamelee is another decent one. Way of the Ninja follows a similar formula but it's much more about stealth than standup combat.

Viewtiful Joe is a great choice.

Did you mean a platformer and a beatup or one or another? If you search for a good platformer, try Flashback from Ubisoft. Ori and the blind forest is good too but a little "gay"

There is also some 30 years worth of older beat em up games. You can run a console emulator or visit web sites that use them such as http://game-oldies.com and play games like Double Dragon, River City Ransom, Streets of Rage, Final Fight...etc or if you want a real challenge that will make you rage, there's Renegade. For a mix of platforming I know theres Bad Dudes and quite a few others I can't think of atm.

@gmak2442:

A game that features a mix of the two. I'm not sure there are a bunch.

@clrockny24: jack and daxter could fit, not too strong on beat and up though but good platformer.

I just bought Rayman Legends couple days ago and that game is really really good, probably the best platformer i have ever played tbh.

Probably a little late to the party, but Onikira just came out on Steam and it sounds like exactly what you're looking for:)

I'll just list plain Beat em ups, because a hybrid of the two is for the most part mediocre unless it's solely single player. If you want that, try Metroidvania games.

Dragon's Crown is the best Beat em up you'll find on PlayStation 3/Vita.

Castle Crasher/ and Guacamelee if you don't have access to 'said' devices.

Streets of Rage Remake if you're a P.C. gamer.

And no offence to a certain user but Shank 1 and 2 are pretty bad games. Personally would only recommend them as a last resort. Scott Pilgrim, ReShelled, Double Dragon Neon are superior choices.
