so, I'm just sitting for days drooling over all those Nippon Ichi games, I really want to get into the SRPG genre, mostly for them. I for some reason never got to play seriously any SRPGs, I'll soon be getting a PSP and I'll get FFT and J'eanne D'arc, but Iv'e heard all those games are pretty tough for SRPG beginners and really bent on your knowledge of past SRPG experience, espicielly the Nippon Ichi games such as Disgaea. any recommendations on what are the best games to enter the genre better? or I should just dive in with to all the games Iv'e mentioned. I'm intrested in FFT: War of the lions, J'eanne D'arc, La Pucelle: Tactics, Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness (PSP), Phantom Brave (PS2), Makai Kingdom, Soul nomad & the world eaters, Disgaea 2 (PSP) and disgaea 3. (Note: Iv'e only gotten Sony consoles and a PC, so unfortunately SRPG games for the nintendo and Microsoft consoles won't help me)

Thanks in advance!

It has SRPG elements but its not a whole SRPG game, SRPG games are like Final Fantasy Tactics and Disgaea.

valkyria chronicles is a great srpg. it has some difficult missions, but they save system is extremely forgiving so its still inviting to new fans. id definitely recommend it. its also good to a see a srpg with high production values. of the disgaea series, ive only played part 2. the production values are low, but the game is pretty solid. its just disappointing that the game gets a bit too grinding focused when compared to similar games like fire emblem. memorable characters are a plus. those are the only strategy games ive played on a sony platform. of the two, id recommend valkyria chronicles first.

If you're looking for more "westerned" style SRPGs, i would recommend King's Bounty and Silent Storm.

EDIT: Oh yeah, forgot about Fallout Tactics.

I'm actully looking to get into the JSRPGs, such as the examples I gave in my first post! I'm fine with the western SRPGs, I got fallout tactics as well myself. Its the very diffrent japanese SRPG genre that interests me, such as final fantasy tactics and disgaea.

You should be fine with the games you mentioned. I suggest you start with the granddaddy of SRPGs = FFT. That should prepare you for the rest.

Also, don't be intimidated by the Disgaeas. The beauty of that series is that it can be as deep or as superficial as you like -- an expert can get really into the system and make a 9,999 level character. But a novice doesn't even need a 100 level character to finish the main storyline in any of the games. As for which Disgaea is best for a beginner - it would probably be the first since the gameplay gets more complex with each game. Personally, I like D3 best though.

Good luck finding the time to play all the Nippon Ichi games on your list. That looks like a zillion hours of gameplay.

I'll add that if you really like SRPGs, you should definitely not overlook Valkyria Chronicles. It is one of the best SRPGs I've ever played. If you own a PS3 and are interested in SRPGs this game should be on your must play list.

If you really want to try out a beginner level SRPG you could try Suikoden Tactics for PS2. (Warning it has atrocious voice acting). It was a fun little SRPG. But IMO you should just stick with the games that interest you on your list.

Here's the list of my all time fav SRPG.

1. Final Fantasy Tactics (PSP version is superior overall, but frame-rate is big issue. If that hinders you too much, try PS1 version)

2. Disgaea 1 (PSP version is the best version)

3. Tactic Ogre

4. Romance of the Three Kingdoms X (I put it in here since RPG element is strong enough to fit SRPG fan's taste. For unlimited replay value, this is way to go)

5. Shining Force

6. Shining Force III (Unfortunately, I can't tell you about episode 2 and 3 since I wasn't able to get my hands on them)

7. Front Mission 4 (Many people will hate me for saying this, but this was my favorite Front Mission game)

8. Front Mission 3

9. La Pucelle Tactics (Lesser known, but the game deserves attention)

10. Valkyria Chronicles.

Those were my three suggestions, too. Particularly Silent Storm, for having one of the coolest combat systems ever.

Strategy RPGs - generally role-playing games where you control squads/armies of customisable characters, which you manoeuvre around areas/grids and fight enemies in turn-based battles.

Final Fantasy Tactics may be tough for SRPG beginners but Jeanne D'Arc? That would actually be one of the first games I'd recommend to a new SRPG player. It's much simpler compared to other SRPGs, a bit more streamlined, and the story isn't difficult to get. It was also a very solid game in my opinion. Since you're buying that, start with that one if anything.

thanks for the comment =)

and well, in each of the nippon ichi games you can sink from 40 (just completing the main story) to a couple of hundreds, I can see myself sinking 80-100 in each one, its not my thing to max the **** out of my characters in games, but I do like to find more hidden things and get more evolved and stronger than just what is needed to finish the storyline, and I'm trying to squeeze 2-3 hours of gameplay a day, sometimes even 6 hours, It'll keep me busy for some monthes but its not like each one of those games require 300+ hours, because after youv'e gotten all the skills classes and such things for your characters and so on, all you get to see more is higher numbers, and I'm more into seeing most of what I can, but when I finish seeing it all, I usually don't bother to level more just to see higher numbers. =)
