Ive played Persona 3 and 4 and thats about as far as my knowledge of the series goes.

I want to play some of the other SMT games (PS2 only for now) and looking at the games, im slightly overwhelmed. It looks like theres quite a few sub-series each having a few games within.

Id like to play all eventually but which are best reccommended? I really liked student by day, shadow killer at night aspect of Persona 3/4 so i hope some of the games are like that (although ive been told none feature Social Links).

Some sort of ranking would be much appreciated. Thanks.

I highly recommend you Nocturne. It is third and latest game on the core SMT series.

The Digital Devil : Avatar Tuner series are only good if you get both games. Individually they're rather on the short side (specially part 1) and are more restricted in the gameplay department than nocturne, although they have more story development and character interaction.

^ Basically what that poster said.

Nocturne and the Digital Devil Saga games are great.

Nocturne is the greatest JRPG ever released IMO. But if you're into something that's more plot heavy, go with Digital Devil Saga. Just don't compare them any of the Persona titles, those games are practically a genre unto themselves.

Just incase you are like me and live in the PAL region, Nocturne is known as Lucifer's Call (which sounds much cooler and actually makes sense) and Digital Devil Saga: Avatar Tuner is just Digital Devil Saga. Yes, there is definitely a 'saga', Panzer just forgot it, thats all. Lucifer's Call has much more to do, it's not heavy on the side quests but there are a lot more than in either of the DDS games. Honestly DDS1 bores me. I bought the second game first because it was there and the first game wasn't. If I had bought DDS1 first, I probably wouldn't have even thought about buying the sequel. DDS2 is a great game. Lucifer's Call is much better though. Be warned however, it is NOT an easy game. You will die... a lot. But at the same time you should have much more fun. It's even got a large optional area of the game and alternate endings. The plot moves pretty slowly though. So if you prefer your games to be plot driven, go with DDS (although things in terms of both gameplay AND story don't pick up until DDS2). Devil Summoner: Raidou vs The Soulless Army isn't a bad game either. It doens't keep my interest for too long and I never beat this one but it's not bad. Worth looking into. I know you said only PS2 but just for future reference, if you have a DS you'd probably like to know that an SMT game is available on that as well. I don't know what they're like but you could get the original Persona games for the PS1. Persona 1 also recieved a remake on PSP.

Oh right, so Nocturne is Lucifers Call? I assumed they were seperate series.

Anyway ive ordered DDS 1+2 and after that ill try Lucifers Call. I also saw Persona PSP on PSN so thats what ill play after LC.

Thanks for the recommendations guys.

The persona on the store is the PS1 version which I thought was lacking compared to the newer ones, 3 and 4. Lucifers call and Digital devil saga 2 are excellent games though. I haven't played DDS1 yet though.

I haven't played Lucifers call, but I have played the digital Devil Saga games, and I wasn't really a fan. They were ok, and I finished them, but the games are pretty much just walking through mazes and getting into random fights too often. Same as the first persona game on the PSP.

I first got into the series through Persona 3 and 4, but none of the other ones I've played were half as good as them.

I agree, they are both great games. If you ever get a PS or PS3 try Persona 2 as well or the PSP remake of Persona.

I still need to start with the SMT series myself. I got a hold of a mint Nocturne (Lucifer's Call) copy for just 5 bucks, but I heard it was really hard, so that has me put off until now.

Well, after my stroke of luck the only copies second hand I found have the price of regular games IF there are any available. So it depends on how much you're willing to spend.

I'm pretty sure Nocturne had a second print run (at least in America), so it shouldn't be as hard to find as other games.

You're going to see the game over screen several times, there's no getting around that with all of the variables. It's all worth it.

Usually that bothers me quite a bit though.
