First look at MAG

The Sony blog has the first screenshot of MAG, and I thought I'd pass it along. What are your opinions of this game? I'm not really doubtful that they can pull off the 256 players thing from a technical standpoint, as they wouldn't be claiming it if they couldn't do it. I'm curious to see how the matches will play out. It could be a mess if no one wants to follow orders or play as a team, or it could be flat out incredible.

They just have to make sure that anyone who doesn't co-operate gets screwed; both tactically and in terms of game rewards/penalties.

This is third person, I presume?

Not sure.Either way I'd have to get it for PC as I don't have a PS3 at the moment. Though by the time the game comes out I'll probably have one. And this isn't the first game coming out thats doing something like that. Remember Huxley? I just hope they don't do a monthly fee....which they most likely would have to do...probably going to be using their own servers.

Squad based gameplay is a good way to prevent battlefields from becoming a cluttered mess of deathmatches, but I'm wondering who would call the shots, I mean, who would determine which squad gets moved and where do they get moved? Headsets should be mandatory for this game.

They should package headsets with this game.

The screenshot is too small for me to really judge the graphics, but i do like the parachutes. Though it would suck if I got sniped before I even landed. :|

I have faith in Zipper. They did realtime character visual damage on the PS2 before anyone else did, and they have been working on this for the past two years, so yeah if any team can make it happen, it's zipper.

P.S Dont make fun of me saying 'realtime character visual damage'. I didnt know how else to put it. :P

I thought I remember it coming to the PC as well.....maybe I was just seeing things? Either way I'll probably have a PS3 by then anyways so it wouldn't really matter. I just pray theres no monthly pay.

If you really want to go it alone, get one of the million of other shooters that are built for single player.

I agree. This isn't Halo*. It really seems designed from the ground up to encourage team play and to provide an epic war experience. I can't imagine that a game like this would be fun to play as a lone wolf... well, unless you were sniping.

*- I love Halo, and wasn't knocking it in the least.

I really hope its good, i've always really wanted a game like this. Hopefully they can really create the feeling of being in a war.

Now just make a Warhawk game like this, and i'll be a happy camper.

IMO they really should try this with a street gang style game like The Warriors before they try it with a military setting. It would allow the garanteed chaos fit into the story of the game rather than distract from it.

An interesting tech demo style game would be the previously horrible State of Emergency except with all the NPCs replaced with online humans.

Squad based gameplay is a good way to prevent battlefields from becoming a cluttered mess of deathmatches, but I'm wondering who would call the shots, I mean, who would determine which squad gets moved and where do they get moved? Headsets should be mandatory for this game. SteelAttack

According to the claims of a purported insider (someone who was part of a focus group) posted on Kotaku a few days ago, human generals are going to set the broad strategy, though I wouldn't be surprised if commanders on the ground are given wiggle room.

Here is that article:
Insider Describes the World of Sony's MAG

I liked this bit of speculation:
Some speculated/wished that at high command levels, the game moved back into some sort of top-down/RTS interface. That sort of happens. "Everyone is in the field," Orange said, "but the person in charge is capable of looking at the map and commanding the overall group or individual troops. He is also capable of things like airstrikes and parachute drops. He could either control and babysit from far back, or jump right into the action with a weapon himself."MAG insider

This was the biggest news in E3 for me, if even half of whats promised gets out in the final result it will be worth the purchase. I am surprised by the graphical quality in that shot though, i expected it to take more of a hit for the amount on screen at once. I guess time will tell.

IMO it has to be like Battlefield 2/2142, where you have a heirarchy. You have one commander per team that calls the big shots, then smalelr-scale orders trickle down the line of command. It's just so cool when it all works out right: you're playing as squad leader when suddenly the commander tells you "artillery incoming!" and then you tell everyone in your squad to pull the hell out before fire starts raining down from the skies...

sorry, had a little flashback there. :)

it sounds cool from a technical standpoint, but i dont think its for me. id like to try it out but it feels like things would get too discombobulated. im imagining 256 chiefs and no indians.

The size of the battles is nice but then you actually have to have that many people playing. Thats a tall order to fill.
