Mafia217
fun gameplay
or
a good story
or
fun gameplay and a good story
...
It fundamentaly depends on the genre, each genre needs to have something in specific to be worthwile. For example:
The fundamental element for a FPS is the gameplay, which needs to be solid, and worthwile. Wile for a RPG, or a Adventure game, it's fundamental element is not gameplay, but a good story (it's good to have both though, but a good story is the most important element in a RPG or Adventure)
Replay value and music. Music is huge. Whether its old classics with awesome tunes or new dramatic games the music makes a huge different.

It is hard to explain what makes a game good. There is just something there in the game. It is more than just the game looks great, sounds great or even plays great. A good game is made up of the sum of it parts.
Mafia217
That right. A game can have good game play and still not be a good game, and the same for stories, looks, music, and so one.

Interesting, I'll take that advice into account, as well as the rest of what the players have said. This looks promising.1.Good story first and foremost.
2.Great and lovable characters.
3.Good Graphics
4.Plausible and sensible ending
well it really depends on the game i would think...
consider unreal tournament '99 and quake 3 arena...they have horrible stories...but amazing gameplay...and then state of the art graphics...and these are easily some of the best fps games in existence
now consider baldurs gate 2...amazing story...crummy graphics...and amazing gameplay...yet it is still considered one of the best rpgs out there...same thing with wow
this is a really hard question to answer...cause in a perfect world...ud want all three to be equally amazing...but in reality...especially with the examples ive given u...u dont need all three of these elements to be good...sometimes just having acceptable graphics and really good and fun and addicting gameplay and no real story is all u need...but other times...without a story...u aint got nothing...so im not sure how to answer...
