Poll Making a character: Male or Female? (34 votes)

Male 59%
Female 41%

If you've played an RPG or for that fact any MMO you probably encountered the character creation an customisation, my question to you people is: When you make a character do you prefer to make a Male or Female and what role do you pick? (and in the case of a race system like in skyrim also include race if possible)

I play both male and female in every RPG that allows me to.

ME3 would be a slight exception though. Most of my playthroughs have been with the same fem shep in different classes.

As for what I use in Elder Scrolls games, I've always been partial towards the Nord's and Argonian's. But I'll also try most different races in whatever other games.

Honestly, I would sometimes do both, however if it's a male character, then he is usually a mage/warlock type class, female, I usually would make a healer/cleric type class. Both character types would be elves if possible. ;)

I generally make a female character, unless they are overly sexualized, in which case I go for male.

To me, when it comes to playing games that let's you pick male/female, I just pick male for the most parts when it comes to RPG dating girls like in Mass Effect games and so on. I'm not really into playing a female characters in RPG cause it's not my thing, not that I got noting against playing females, it's really not my thing but just so were clear, I'm talking about character creations here not RPG games that don't involve playing female from the start with no creation. Now when I play Dragon's Crown, I pick the Amazon only because she was badass and She got dat Ass.

@Black_Knight_00: Fun fact in the game: APB:reloaded the female hitbox is much smaller as the male, giving you a big advantage over other players!

Depends on what attributes benefit each sex and class I wish to play. Gender only matters as much as it's relevant to the manner in which I want to play. If it'll have no effect, I'll choose male.

I always choose male because I'm male as well so it enhances immersion.

As for race, I usually go for "human" races(like Imperial or Nord in Skyrim) not because I'm racist but for the same reason already mentioned.

I generally create myself first and formost if possible, which means a Male character. But my second character tends to be female. As for class it's usually a pick between anything that does close combat to combat at a distance.

On the first playthrough I always pick something that resembles me the closest so human male. Subsequent playthroughs I'll mix things up with a female character of a different race.

it's game by game. Generally weight options are unsatisfying to me when it comes to males, so playing a male will force me to look like some knuckle dragging moron with shoulders up to his ears. Like in destiny, you get these male characters with thick torsos...and not really in shape looking, but like 1950s "in shape" looking and small heads. Every male character in destiny looks terrible to me, which I why I run 3 females. Is it wrong to want a Hunter built like a free safety and not a Samoan?

when MMOs start getting it through their heads that there's a middle ground between muscle bound grotesque and scrawny wimp, maybe I'll roll a few males. Until then, females just have better proportions when it comes to the sort of dex-based fighters/swashbucklers that I like to make.

if im only going through the game with 1 character then, generally, male tanks/warriors.

if its something like an MMO where i can have more than 1 character then i generally mix and match....which ever has the coolest looking version of armor (it could differ quite a bit in a game like guild wars for example)

if its dungeon siege then female...always. dont ask why. just doesnt feel right playing that game as a male character.

The sexist male in me wants to choose a woman, but the annoying sjw in me wants to choose a woman. I don't like either, so I go for a man.

Wait...

  • In any game that gives me the option, I will always go for a female character. I don't know why, I just do.
  • In games that also let me choose race (DA, Skyrim, etc) I play as a human. Not a dwarf, elf, khajiit, orc, etc.
  • As for class, I choose the warrior (or whatever the game's equivalent is) about 80%. It usually depends on the game and it's mechanics if I choose to try a different class.

I tend to alternate. To me, the character is the protagonist of the story and not "me" specifically so I don't have strong feelings about the character's gender matching my own. In the ME series, I chose a Femshep all the way through and in retrospect I liked Jennifer Hale's voice acting over Maleshep.

In Dark Souls I mostly made male characters, although my agility build PvP character in DS1 is female.

In Skyrim, the character models/races all seemed so interchangable I just didn't care.

DA I did female characters.

In Tomb Raider I picked... oh... wait. Nevermind.

That's a good point. I have no interest playing "myself" in any game. It has gotten to a point where I am somewhat reluctant to play a game that doesn't allow me to at least pick the gender of the character. It's weird, I know.

Yeah... but to be honest with you, I kinda got tired of it after a while. I will agree that her acting was so much better than broshep's acting.

It's 50/50 for me.

In RPGs with character creation, I tend to just focus on making interesting characters - regardless of whether they're male or female. I honestly don't care about their sex, I simply pick whatever matches up with my character concept best.

As for races...I must admit, I do really like dwarves. I don't particularly enjoy playing as the fighter archetype, but there's just something really fun about a race of violent drunks with wild beards.

That last part is kinda disturbing if you are making a female...

Yeah, she was Bastila in KOTOR and she played Naomi and Emma in the MGS series.

Depends on the game and it's funny. I'll play girl only games like tomb raider and beyond good and evil but in games like Fallout and Skyrim im usually male. Saints row games I can never get to get a male character to look any where near me or how I want so Ill make female.

Since i am male i am most in tune with a male character so i of course make that.

Never have if there is a option played as a female, no need to walk in the opposite sex´s shoes.

Depends on the game. Generally I play as a female but for Mass Effect I always play as the suggested male solider John Shepherd, on principal.

I always create a female. Then, for my second playthrough I go with a male. In games which feature a karma system (like Fallout 3), I play nice when playing with the girl, and then switch to the evil path with the male :)

Lately I've been basing my choice on which has the better voice acting, or purely if I want to make a character like, say, Macklemore, then I'll go with the corresponding gender. I remember once when I was really young some friends laughed coz I was playing Pokemon Ruby as the female (April was it?) and that kinda made me feel bad, but it didn't take too long for me to stop giving a ****.

It's not like being male or female will help or break the immersion, even if my character is male, the Me I know still can't swing a battleaxe bigger than myself, so what does gender matter?

Usually I go with a male character because I'm a man. Like, if I'm trying to imagine myself being immersed in that world, then it makes more sense to pick a character that has more of my characteristics. But sometimes I choose a female character because they look better than the male characters and I don't feel like spending the entire game looking at a man.
