The man who created cultural phenomena like the Mario and Zelda franchises wants to make a first-person shooter. Speaking to Kotaku, Shigeru Miyamoto explained that while this genre is interesting to him, he is too busy with other projects to pursue it in earnest.

"I actually do kind of want to make a first-person shooter, but I don't have time," he said.

Miyamoto explained to Kotaku that if he were to build a first-person shooter, it might be different in structure than typical FPS games, and perhaps not particularly violent. He said he was specifically enthused with the idea of a game that allows players to look around and fully explore a 3D space.

"Rather than necessarily the question of 'What kind of weapon do I have?' in a first-person shooter or 'What kind of effect does that have on an enemy?' I think that the structure of a first-person shooter is something that's very interesting," he said through a translator. "Having that 3D space that in theory you are in and being able to look around and explore that--particularly being able to do that in conjunction with another person--is very interesting."

Miyamoto has dabbled in the first-person shooter space before. He served as a producer on Retro Studios' 2002 GameCube title Metroid Prime, though he was not involved in the day-to-day creation of that game.

I think it would be refreshing to see something different for the FPS genre if Miyamoto was at the helm. Any thoughts?

Well Fumito Ueda (Team ICO) said he would like to make one at some point too. Either they want to be part of modern trends or have something special they would like to do in an FPS that others aren't doing and they can capitalise on it

The latter is what I want them to focus on. Bulletstorm, to me, was refreshing in the sense that you had to think about your kills creatively in order to get the highest points possible instead of just aiming and shooting. With Miyamoto and Ueda, I think they would rather avoid the modern trends of today and definitely want to stand out with their own take of the genre.

I didnt really think at all. Was just a very fun brainless romp for me. The stylish kills just came naturally i thought, during the mayhem.

Yeah bulletstorm was a lot of fun because it was so different. And it didn't try to take itself too seriously. You didn't sit behind a wall taking pop shots at guys popping up and down behind cover. I can see Miyamotos FPS being a little more light hearted though, can't imagine him making a game where you shoot people in the face

I'd really like to see what kind of FPS he could come up with so I hope he gets the opportunity to try this someday. I too really enjoy Bulletstorm as well with it's creative twists.

I say, let him. He deserves the opportunity to make any game he wishes. He's certainly proved himself in a variety of genres.

Just what the world needs... another first-person shooter.

If it was any different than the norm, do you think you would hold a different stance on the matter? Miyamoto isn't trying to join the trend, but at least try something different that isn't done in a FPS. It's a change of pace that I would rather welcome, especially if it makes good use of the Wii U's control scheme.

Perhaps, but not likely. Mostly because he mentions he wants to make it exploration heavy, and exploration in first-person usually sucks. The only reason it worked in games like Metroid Prime is because the developers smartly saw it sucked and gave the player tools and implements to actually home in on key points in the environment.

Also, shooters tend to live and die by their weaponry, and I don't know that Miyamoto would be at all adept at designing weapons.

Maybe he wants to drop the shooter aspect and just focus on the first-person. Skyrim with Zelda textures, perhaps?

I can't see it being any better than COD. Any seeing that he works for Nintendo, it's going to be something VERY casual for the Wii U.

Given the fact Nintendo's core gamers key on a handful of franchises (Pikmin's dismal sales show that Miyamoto has a lot fewer fans than Mario) and that they haven't demonstrated much of an interest in shooters (Metroid Prime 1 is the bestselling of the modern Metroid games) I doubt Miyamoto's attempt would end well commercially.

Sounds like he's more interested in the first person perspective than the FPS genre.

Miyamoto doesn't even have time to wipe his ass anymore, which is a shame. The guy is a true game-design visionary, and Nintendo relies on him far too much and spreads him way too thin. I'd love for them to give Miyamoto a few years designing a new game, but it'll never happen. He just pops in and out of different project for damage control, barely enough to make a difference anymore.

To me, Retro studios is the new "Nintendo", they're the only team seemingly capable of doing justice to Nintendo's franchises these days.
