This reminds me of another Mass Effect gripe I have. Despite a decent amount of customization choices for your character, 90% of the time you wind up with a seriously busted looking guy or gal. Like, keep the helmet option on ugly. After about half an hour's worth of trial and error I just whipped up a Lando Calrissian and moved on, couldn't fight the ugly machine any longer.

I think the idea there was that they wanted the character to be gritty and war-hardened in order to fit in more with the general story. From a continuity standpoint, it wouldn't do to have a pretty boy/girl as the main protagonist in Mass Effect any more than it would have made sense to be able to dress your Saint's Row character in a pink tutu.
Still, though, I tend to agree with your point, which is more customisation = better. I managed to create a couple of faces that didn't have scars (or at least not noticeable ones) and seemed to be pretty decent looking, both guy and girl. Keep trying.
yeh i had the same issue. I made about ten different dudes and spent about 2 hours before i managed to make a guy that didnt look like a complete retard (he/shes supposed to be the saviour of the universe). Im pretty happy with my characters though, so it was worth it rather than be dissapointed when i was looking at the dude 100% of the game. The preset characters are terrible, they should have worked on making them look more normal, you wouldnt find weirder looking people out in the streets.

Uhh I don't think you tried hard enough, the girl I made was extremely hot (well for a virtual character), and the guy I made was mantastic (well I heard from a girl he was mantastic).
