Is this one of those games where you have to spend a lot of time doing reaserch about were to find weapons/armor and having to micromanage your party? Also, is this game much more combat oriented than DA:O (I hated that game).

If I hated DA:O, are chances are I wont like this one either?

well have you ever played KOTOR? its basically the same thing like that

yeah you can manage your teammates, and I don't think you need to do any type of research really at all in the game.

but it's your rpg with many choices that effect the endingand the people you interact around.

and yes there is combat

what is "DA"?

but I would recommended that you go on youtube and look up some gameplay videos of Mass effect, usually that helps gives you an idea of what the game is about and if you think it's sutible with you.

DA is Dragon Age Origins. I think that you will like ME. It is different than DA and really an overall better game. You do have to manage your party memebers and get weapon upgrades and stuff like that but it makes it that much more fun for me. It is a fantastic game. But if you are worried about it thenI would rent it first.

It's completely different from DA:O combat-wise (I hate DA:O combat too). - You don't have direct control on your squadmates, you can order them into position and order to activate a certain power, but they will use said powers on their own. - You mostly find weapons by killing enemies. - Yes, it's pretty combat heavy, although there's also a LOT of dialogue. Piece of advice: the first 2-3 hours or so are really boring and may put you off, try to leave the Citadel as soon as possible and thats where the game becomes interesting. Bottom line, if you hated Dragon Age it doesn't mean you'll hate Mass Effect.

oh duh xD *face palms self* DA seems a bit slower paced imo anyways going off with what he said, I think the best bet is just look up video reviews and watch lots and lots of game play if you don't want to spend money on renting

Dragon Age is a little too much KOTR formula for my liking as well. Mass Effect was a much more enjoyable title. The main character is not a mute, (this was such a step back when I played DA) and the dialogue is really interesting. The combat is pretty good too, but the long range weapons are a bit useless because of how close quarters most of the action is, and the powers you can earn are a blast to use.

If you like dialog trees, you'll love Mass Effect. Dialog trees are the future of gaming. There's no better gameplay than listening to a lot of dialog and choosing which branch of dialog you want to hear next. Just ask any BioWare fan.

Well I thought Mass Effect was "decent" at best, but if you hated DA:O and if you found Dialog boring in DA:O, then you should steer clear of MS.

haven't played DA, but I loved Mass Effect. the way the game got you involved in the story by letting you develop your character yourself was genius. it's amazing how simple stuff like choosing the dialogue can get you that much more immersed in the plot, which I don't get with most other games. by the end of it I felt like I'd really gone on a journey with the main character. the repetitive side missions and sometimes messy combat hurt the game a little, but it's still one of the essentials of this gen.

Good post, I agree.

To add to this, having the first Mass Effect is a bonus once you start Mass Effect 2. If you import a completed saved game from the first, the second runs like a true trilogy would.

There's not much to micromanage, other than ME1's dreadful inventory system which was fixed in ME2, it's basically a shooter with stats and dialogue trees, ME2 is more of a shooter than ME1, neither of them had great shooting, ME2's shooter aspect was decent at best, tons and tons of production value though.

Not before he plays Mass Effect 1. He'd miss most of the plot otherwise.

Ok so I got Mass Effect 1 and...
So far the game seems right up my alley.

I made my character look a lot like me, and I love how I can shape his personality through dialog trees and such.

The combat seems like a HUGE step forward from DA:O (even though it was released before it), and I like the whole sci fi theme.

Im only about 20 mins into the game, but I have a good impression of it.

See, the main thing that ruined it for me with dragon age was the TERRIBLE combat system.

Are you playing Soldier class? Level up assault and sniper rifles like there's no tomorrow. Also, either level up shield boost all the way or upgrade your armor with the best shield modulators you can find. Both is even better.

Combat and party management and reserach are far lower than dao and are bad in both rpg and action terms. So i guess not.

With the right add-ons and ammo you can turn sniper rifles into rail guns that kill almost any enemy with one shot and explode on impact so I definitely found them worthwhile in ME1.

Agreed, also there's plenty of situations where you'r on a planet surface and must breach the defenses of a stronghold. That's where sniper rifles really shine.

Compared to what exactly? Pokemon? :P

When I think of the gameplay (not the story or the lore, but the gameplay) of Mass Effect, "complex" is not really a word that springs to mind. I guess maybe if you're comparing it to first person shooters, then it's complex, but compared to other RPGs or games from various other genres, I'm just not seeing it.

well considering as how halo and mw2 are the most popular games on the market.....and idk if the tc plays rpg's yeah its complex compared to throwing a knife in a gun fight....but compared to baldur's gate....its like reading a comic book compared to tolkein or asimov........while its not extremely in depth gameplay wise....it has some complexity ie powers, techs, healing, cover, leveling, customization, etc.....but not nearly as much as a full on rpg.....

Mass Effect has a faster pace than Dragon Age. The story still is the main focus though. If you like shooters, there is no reason you shouldn't enjoy Mass Effect. Of course, the shooter mechanics in Mass Effect 1 aren't refined as games in the shooter genre, but it's not bad to the point where it makes the game unplayable.

Just my personal comparison i despised DA:O But loved The Mass Effect Series (1&2) Footnotes: Played Mass Effect First Hated DA:O The second i started playing it but gave it a 3-hour chance. It may just be the era (space, medieval)

Yea, same deal with me. Except I didnt hate dragon age because of the era, but because of how bad the combat was.
