Ive been wanting to get into the Mega Man franchise and see what the fuss is about, so yeah, i stumbled across this and i hear the first three games are great, so its even more cool to now play them with new graphics and music!

So yeah, how do they compare to the original games? Are they as good or better? Or are they abominations that shouldnt exist

I'd suggest getting that as a collector's item almost, and buying the Anniversary Collection for actual playing, since it contains Mega Man through Mega Man 7, and both Power Battle games.

Rockman Mega World is not included in the Anniversary collection, it still remains exclusive to the Mega Drive.

And as expected the games are much better on the Mega Drive than on the flicker master. Besides the improved visuals and music, they also feature various gameplay tweaks, fixed some glitches and added some extra gameplay.

The game was only released in Japan and Europe however, you cannot play it 'normally' on an US system.

It was also "out" in the US for a limited time on Sega Channel, which is the only time I "officially" played it.

As for the question, get it over Anniversary Collection if you can. As someone who lives in the US, I'd love to play it legally. Hell, I'd pay $60+ to buy an NTSC-U/C version to play on my Genesis if they'd just release it. That's coming from someone who owns MMAC on the Gamecube.

Edit: I forgot to mention that the music alone is worth skipping the NES/Famicom versions.

Definitely not. The music is worse and the gameplay is much slower. The original NES versions may not be as pretty to look at (not that there's a huge graphical improvement with the MD version), but they play better and are ultimately more fun. Do yourself a favor an just get the Mega Man Anniversary compilation.

Mr_Matthews

I have to disagree with you there. I find the music to be better in Wily Wars than it is in the originals, especiallyin Mega Man 3. With the flute sounds in several tracks, such as the Title and Stage Start themes, it felt like Protoman was there with you the entire time. It was almost eerie sometimes.I don't know if the effect was intended or not, but that's what I got from it. Also, the ending theme for 3just sounds much better than the NES version.

Yeah, not a big improvement. :|

The graphics music and gameplay are better on the MD. The original FC versions are not worth bothering with.

I gave it a try, the games look really nice, fantastic use of colour. Ive played the SNES and PSone 2D games, and yeah it wasnt as detailed, but heck there was just this really cool smooth and yet just enough detailed look to it. Same for music too, its a bit more low-key so far, but it sounds JUST RIGHT I havent played the originals so i cant judge, but these feel like excellent updates (on the audiovisual side at least).

Yeah, I'm still going to have to go with "crippled gameplay" and "gimped music."

I played the originals pretty fanatically, so it was pretty obvious to me that the games simply ran slower. This was especially obvious during the boss battles (look no further than Quick Man, if you need proof).

Also, the musical tracks were a huge letdown for me. The original Mega Man trilogy had fantastic music. When "updating" the music for the Mega Drive version, the team in charge of the project either didn't or *couldn't*duplicate the variety of "instruments" from the original tracks. As a result, the music sounds muddier, with the harmonizing bits being less distinct.

Enhancedvisuals or no, this was clearly a pretty lazy "update," with not enough improvements being made to compensate for the sacrifices. It's perfectly playable (especially for those with little to no experience with the originals) and it's worth having as a collector's item (I'm glad I own it, for one), but it's in no way superior to the original 8-bit versions.

Well ill take what you said into account, most people who diss MD version of staunchly Nintendo franchises have never played them or not properly. Ive also taken into account that P_Z probably thinks that FC stands for Flickering Crap:P So far my experience has been good, its just that it might not be an ideal way to see why people rave about the earlier games on the series hence why im asking.

Rockman is a Capcom franchise, not Nintendo's. And I actually like the FC alot better than the SFC, but in this case Rockman I-III are pretty much the definitive titles of the FC series, and they're better on the MD. But if you have a soft spot for old flickering and glitchy games, and need to play them that way to make you feel more 'hardcore' or something, then by all means try the FC versions. Otherwise just skip them over.

Offcourse, it is a Capcom franchise, i could tell by the bootup screens:P Its just that when people think off really old long-running Japanese franchises, they seem very Nintendo such as Contra or Castlevania (okay not good examples but yeah) where they took a stab or two at a Sega outing (which Nintendrones will insult with no knowledge of them whatsoever). Thankfully, as we all know Japanese support greatly increased with the Saturn... Its just that sometimes its best to play the originals and then see the remakes, gives you more appreciation, but seeing as you are saying the originals are so bad by todays standards ill just skip them.

Contra began on the arcades , the FC Contra did not came out until after Super Contra was released on the arcades, and it also came out for the MSX2. Akumajou Dracula, or 'Castlevania' if you will, was on the MSX2, arcade, Sharp X68000, and PC-Engine before it came out for the MD.

Offcourse im perfectly aware of that, but people associate them with Nintendo Like the Final Fight series which started off in the Arcades and had some abominations released on the SFC.

Panzer, you're sort of missing the point. He's saying that when the major releases are on another system first (Mega Man and Castlevania in this case), people tend to stupidly associate them as franchises owned by that system's company. For example, some people think that Spyro and Crash are owned by Sony, despite all the multiplatform releases, as well as some GBA exclusives. I've also seen someone reference Banjo-Kazooie as a Nintendo game, despite the fact that they were holding a copy of Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts& Bolts for the XBox360.

Of course, some of these people still think there is such a thing as the Playstation 360, so go figure. -_-;

Well, thankfully, I'm neither a Nintendo or a Sega fanboy, so I don't get all rosy-eyed when thinking about old franchises. But just because a game has better graphics doesn't mean it's a better game. The original NES versions of Mega Man I-III are better because they were simply programmed better. Oh, and hating the FamiCom doesn't make the MD version better, either.

Just out of curiousity, how much are you planning on paying for Wily Wars?

No off course not, but its just that the general consensus is that people think the MD sucks because it had lame ports of MK2 or whatever:P As for getting my hands on the game, believe it or not, i have a Mega Man fanatic friend, he kindly lent his copy (yes i know, story sound convenient given the alternative ways of playing older games...)

Nintendo fanboys? The worst, IMO. ;)

I have both of the warring 16-bit systems, and I love them both. However, I only have about a dozen SNES games and around a hundred Genesis/Mega Drive games. More often than not, the Sega versions of multi-console releases perform a bit better than their SNES counterparts.

Get it, it has 3 of the best Mega Man games in one but with better visuals… (not so much on the sound department though, I prefer 8-bit music) still it's the same game play and very fun to play. If you have a PS2, GC or XBOX get the Anniversary Collection, you get Mega Man 1-8 in one disc plus 2 fighting games. Be sure to check out the Mega Man X series as well.
