I am going to buy metal gear solid 4 for ps3 so i was wondering if i should buy all the previous games and beat them, or just learn the whole story online. Also, are the games still fun?

Play 1,2, and 3 before you play 4. It's just too awesome of a series to skip to the end.
The games are still incredible to play to this day.
Technically you should play 3, 1, 2, 4 to do it in order. Or you could also skip 3 since it doesnt really prelude too much 4 besides a couple of characters but you'd be missing a great game.Kurushiowhy should i play them in that order? would it be better if i played 1,2,3,4 or 3,1,2,4?

3,1,2,4 is chronological order, but I'd suggest playing them 1,2,3,4. 3 is more powerful if you've already played 1 and 2, IMO.
Even though 3 happens before 1, 2, and 4 chronologically, you should still play them in release order. Obviously Kojima intended for them to be played in that order or he would have released 3 earlier. Plus, you would be missing out on a lot of stuff that you pick up in 1 and 2.
Well Snake Eater is probably my favorite game ever, and the other two are also close, so yea, you definatly need to play them. They still hold up today and even though I have yet to play the fourth, playing the previous three will definatly make the experience better.
Oh and play them 1-2-3-4 in order even though on the timline 3 comes first. Mainly because MGS is a story with intense focus on character growth and playing them in that order brings about a better realization of two of the series key characters; Big Boss and Revolver Ocelot
yeah, they have the essentials pack for sale as well.
MGS is still PS1 format i believe and 2 and 3 are obviously playstation2.
if you just play 4...without playing the others first, you are going to wonder "What the **** are they talking about" on a regular basis. plus, its good to know the whole story and all the characters involved
also, there is portable ops on the PSP...it takes place after MGS3. its not 100% necessary for the story really but a good play for that handheld

It's like watching Episode 1 in the star wars trilogy first.
if you are hardcore...a few hours a piecebut thats after you played through one once.
it also depends on how you play. i took my sweet time playing through the first time for each game(15-20 hours, no joke). i just beat mgs4 yesterday(my 4th time)in like 6 hours...im not good enough for beating it in under 5.
it also depends on watching cutscenes, which if its your first time you will want to watch. i know in mgs4 the time for a cutscene is added as your playtime as well
get Twin Snakes instead of MGS1. The remake is much better. Play them in order MGS1: The Twin Snakes, MGS2, MGS3, and MGS4
why should i play them in that order? would it be better if i played 1,2,3,4 or 3,1,2,4?Don't play them 3, 1, 2, 4. Just because they're chornological doesn't mean they should be played that way. Kojima intended fans to play them in the order they were released. So play them 1, 2, 3, 4.[QUOTE="Kurushio"]Technically you should play 3, 1, 2, 4 to do it in order. :Edit: Take note that you need a PSone memory card for the 1st MGS. Unless you get it from the PSN store when it comes out.
I can only speak for MGS1 because it is the only MGS I have played. You must play this game. It is the greatest game experience I've ever had. It's not a game, it's an experience. It is dated and the graphics haven't aged well, but it's unrivaled in its scope and vision.
The story, the cinematics, the surprises(which prolly aren't surprises after this long time), you must play this game. You really will say "whoa" after finishing it.
They are all fun. I'd start out with the first level or two of MGS4 and then try out 3, than either 1 or 2 (it doesn't matter much because enough of one is revealed in 2) then replay MGS4 from the start all the way to the end. If you start out with one or two, you might loose interest in the games at first.
Lol, im in the same boat. I just brought 4 and want to play the rest. Got 2 and 3 fairly cheap and just need 1 now to start. So yeah i'd say so and i aint even played them :P.

MGS1 is gonna be on the PSN in exactly 1 week and you can play it on your psp :D i can't wait.
yeah get MGS 1/2/3
about MGS3, if you can get the subsistence edition, its an expanded edition that in addition to the main game, gives you extras like the original Metal Gear games from the 80s, they are actually pretty good.
YES!!! Three of the best games of all timeI am going to buy metal gear solid 4 for ps3 so i was wondering if i should buy all the previous games and beat them, or just learn the whole story online. Also, are the games still fun?

Subsistence is REALLY expensive everywhere. Instead he should get Essentials, it includes MGS 1, MGS2 Substance and MGS3 Subsistence (only without the second disc)yeah get MGS 1/2/3

Darkman2007
The first game is short, but its gripping from the very second you put it in. Very few games match its presentation, its astounding something like that was achieved back in PSone days. I would suggest playing it on an emulator, cleans up the graphics HUGELY.also, how long would it take to complete all these games?
