Yes its worth it. IN fact all the Metal Gear Solids are worth it. IF you have a PS2 you might as well pick up the Essential Metal Gear Solid collection which has all three games including the original MGS for PS1 for $30. Of course the PS1 graphics won't look so hot now but playing it for the story alone is worth it.
you have to be the biggest rookie to life and gaming if you think its not worth it, when the game first came out the graphics were the best of any other game, this game sets the best moods out of any of the metal gears, its so classic and has alot of stuff to offer, i bet you wen u play it your gonna be surprised at the amount of depth this game has
definitely get this game. if you have a wii or gamecube, get the remake, it is called twin snakes. it is basically MGS1 with all the enhancements of MSG2 (first person shooting, up to date graphics etc.)

it's a ps1 game, so the graphics is kinda old now. but the gameplay and the story line are still the best most notable the voice acting and the presentation of the game and is a definite classic! so if you just want to play games with good graphics, then you might be disappointed with this game. but if your a metal gear fan, then its a must play and it shouldnt be miss.
I J U S T started it, bought it on ebay $10 shipped. Check it out, its still a great game. Also, if you dont want a game based on a picture, you dont belong on a game forum. Leave.
In a word yes. Sure it doesn't look as good graphically, but it was the PS1 days. It has excellent voice acting and a great story (as far as I have played it, haven't completed it as yet :P)
If possible go for the Gamecube remake. Same story with some enhancements, plus better graphics.DuckyX
For the love of god, do not do this under any circumstances. The "remake" is an utter travesty and an insult to the original game. It lacks all the storytelling genius that made the original game so brilliant, plus snake isn't Goku - he cannot jump onto moving missiles >.> .

I can't see why some people actually think the remake is better then the original. Other then the graphics and the gameplay theres no way its better. The cutscenes, voice acting, are all better in the original.
If you are concerned about the graphics, and want the experience of playing the "original" version of the game, then you can always get the PC version.
