Well today I am asking you guys if you prefer either Contra or Metal Slug.

OR

Well, personally, while both are great challenging shooters, one has a better focus. You feel more connected with the characters and the game (even plot wise sometimes) in Metal Slug games, and each area is designed to be a challenge but with practice, you can figure out alternate ways to do things. Not to ention actual branching paths even in the earlier games and much mre fun weapons and better hit collisions as well as the fact that when you push a button the character reacts when you press it which is an issue in later Contra games.

Contras ok to, with it all out action and its main focus n difficulty, even though a lot of the games actually have rushed or badly designed stages which they pass of as being made on purpose to be hard (Which is BS) when that's not even close. Sometimes yes, but not all the time and the fans seem to deny anything POSSIBILITY of that happening, other games do this as well (Megman Zero anyone?) where bad design choices are passed off as challenges including areas where you HAVE TO GET IT. Odd, that must mean it's a flaw.

Contra sacrafices variety in a lot of its games (Not all) for ambushes of enemies and keeping you on your feet and not expecting anything. Metal Slug has ambushes, but the enemies aren't just throw at you, enemies have unique attacks and patterns, some require strategy to get through, you have more ways of attacking either by weapons, animals, machines, and etc. Not to mention you can get bonus items by recusing soldiers, which also makes Metal Slug seem more like an Arcade Adventure game then just a straight up shooter, but it has games that do that as well. Also the enemy reactions and your reactions to certain situations. Metal Slug just seems to be more of a complete game instead of just making run and shoot generic arcade shooter.

SO what's your opinion on the better series?

Contra. One hit, you die. No exceptions (well, shield, but it's like 10 seconds long).

Thus the level design has to be much more precise to facilitate this. Contra 3 and 4 are like music. You can play without missing a note, and if you did you know exactly where and why, and it's ALWAYS your fault because the controls are so fluid.

Metal Slug expects you to take hits and die to make arcade operators more money. It's still really fun but I won't play except on freeplay or Anthology because so much craziness is happening. I can't play 'scientifically' the way I can with Contra.

Though co-op in Metal Slug is way more fun than co-op Contra. 2 players in Contra throws off my groove, 2 in Metal Slug excuses the fact that it has no groove.

You die In one hit in Metal Slug (Unless your driving the Metal Slug) Metal Slug is a lot less crazy then Contra because Metal Slug actually factually has space for you to breath(In terms of having 6 of the same enemy come from all direction on one screen.) and focuses more on the enemies having variety. Some people like the latter better. Some people like the former. Groove?

Groove = my rhythm while playing. Knowing where enemies are, tracking bullets on the screen. It's a very selfish little moment where it's just my character and how things affect him.

You think Metal Slug has more breathing room? Huh. Well, difference in playstyle and opinion I guess. I personally feel almost claustrophobic playing it, maybe because the characters are so big on the screen and I can't jump as much? I don't know. It's like in 3D games when the camera is zoomed in really close - I like having a wide view of the playing area.

DId you play like the NGP version or something because none of the original games even seem to be even close to claustrophobic.

He didn't say that he doesn't believe that you die in one hit. He said that Metal Slug games are designed to expect you to die, because the arcade makers want you to keep putting quarters into it.

That's not even close to how he had the sentence set-up. Even if true, are we forgetting what the early contra games were designed?

Definitely CONTRA! I do like Metal Slug as well, but when you put Contra, Super C, Contra III: The Alien Wars, and Contra: Shattered Soldier in a row it's just too good.:)

They're both rather legendary. But I played Contra first, so naturally, I have more fond memories with it. Well, less than fond at first... But once you get into it and you have everything down, it does kind of have a rhythm to it like the above poster said. It just feels great to play.

Metal Slug is amazing as well, of course. I just prefer Contra.

I absolutely love both series however Contra would likely have more sentimental value...although I did play Metal Slug in the arcades quite a bit.

I love the setup for the bosses in each game. I'd love to see a blend of the 2 games. Metal Slug is much more comical in it's art style & humor than Contra but that isn't a bad thing. In fact it plays well into it's strengths in standing out on it's own.

Metal Slug. I like the original Contra better than the MS games, but overall I prefer the Metal Slug series. I haven't liked every Contra game I've played, I have metal slug. Also, the Metal Slug games have always been absolutely gorgeous, even to this day. Contra looks good, but no where near what the Neo Geo puts out.

Metal Slug by a mile. It was the only good thing I looked forward to every Sunday when my parents dragged me along with them to do the laundry. The first Contra I played was 3 and enjoyed it as well, obviously not as much as I enjoy Metal Slug though. The multi player and single player modes are off the chain, especially when you have a group of friends and switching controllers whenever one dies. I could throw a party just by playing Metal Slug.

It's basically the same story as Contra, just with more of a sense of humor about it. Aliens invade Earth, and disguise themselves as an Earthly military force and proceed to take over the world which you're tasked to stop. (BTW, what's they point of disguising themselves as terrorists? They're gonna piss off the military whether they show up as Earthly terrorists or aliens.)

Not really. Only 1 Metal Slug game involved a exact focus on the Aliens and that was 3. @ they were just adding to the mix. Most of the Story involves stopping a terrorist organization, and then in another game, the heroes join with another team, and later it turns out that team betrays you, then you now have 2 groups that want to take over the world in different ways, then in another game, you track the betrayal group, kill the evil scientist creating doomsday weapons, and the story continues. However, you have to pay attention to the games playing them many times to get some of that info as well, they don't really describe the story during the game is it's vague (but thy do better with that at the end of Metal Slug 4 and onward.) Contra has mixed plots. Depending on the game (including the ones Contra fans say don't exist) but they do good with that so I like both. However, Metal Slugs way of Adventure and trying to have more of an interactive story is better for the soul reason it allows the enemies and boss' to have personalities during the game and realistic reactions. Otherwise they would be tied, and I would probably choose another "Foo tShooter"as the poll says.

Also disguising themselves as terrorists? The Aliens didn't really do that, the Terrorists joined forces with the Aliens, the Aliens tricked them, they tried it again, the aliens tricked them and the entire nation as well as the heroes, and then you go explode their space fortress.

Although I like both, I prefer Metal Slug because it has a less serious tone than Contra.
