I'd go for Splinter Cell, thier games are more serious and fun
The MGS series has always been a little too....homoerotic for my tastes. All the gay references in the names and whatnot and the guy in tight clothes doing slow-motion ballet during gunfire is just about as gross as you can get. Skip this series!
I like the MGS series more, but Splinter Cell is great too... they're very different types of games - Splinter Cell has the Tom Clancy espionage vibe going, with badass secret agents gallivanting around Eastern Europe and that sort of thing, while MGS has a quirky vibe that's impossible to describe but very evident when you play it.
I have tried a couple MGS games and didnt like them almost instantly. I got SplinterCell for Xbox when it came out and have loved Splinter Cell games since. I have bought every one of them as soon as they come out.
Come on, Splinter Cell cannot compare to the legendary solider Solid Snake. Seriously he's the original stealth master. Snake taught Sam Fisher everything he knows.

I do like SC but I prefer MGS.
The comparison lies in that they are both stealth action games. Some gameplay elements are similar in that they can both grab from behind and creep up on enemies. You are right though, they don't play exactly the same, as Sam uses his environments more than Snake.
Splinter Cell is down right boring imo I could not get into the game. I like MGS the best and its also the original stealth action game Syphon Filter and Splinter Cell are only imitators.
They are both great games but even though metal gear has some fictitious elements I feel that it portrays stealth gameplay alot better than splinter cell. Also the story lines and dialogue in Metal Gear are top notch. Just go for METAL GEAR
I've played through mgs1 and 2. I've only played SC PT and disliked it. I usually don't care too much if a story isn't good but the game was just lame. The characters are so plain compared to mgs.
