Hey wouldn't it be cool if instead of Sony, Mircrsoft and Nintendo were to stop all of this console Wars and just but there funds togeather to create the greatest System known to man, gamer and Monkey! That would be so cool, I know it will never happen but what do you think?

No, because it wouldn't be the "greatest system known to man," plus they'd lose the incentive to make new and better things.

Monopolies are always bad, but considering how important microsoft is in the software and sony in the hardware they could join General Electric, Intel, Cisco and some companies more to make the uber-company, making not only consoles but anything. In no time the companies that hadn't fussioned would go bankrupt all you needed would be bought to that company and everybody would work for that company.

I hope that never happens.

Competition keeps the industry on its toes.  Without it quality would suffer.  Also, those three companies all have different visions and philosophies, and would be unlikely to agree on the design of a system. We'd also have less choices as gamers--for instance, I certainly wouldn't want the only console on the market to exclusively use a motion-sensing controller, but some people wouldn't want a console that didn't use the it.

I fully attribute features such as motion control, Xbox Live, Home, Xbox Live Arcade, Virtual Console, dual analogue sticks, demos, hard drives and a lot of the other interesting features that have emerged over the past generation or two to be a result of competitors trying to one-up each other with varying features. You'd lose a lot of that with one system. If consoles start becoming all the same again, then I can understand the argument, but the difference between systems is what makes this generation interesting, and what will continue to fuel faster evolution of console design.
