Mirror's Edge tanked but EA has stated that they are going to make a sequel anyway and seek to address issues that may have kept people from picking up the original. Pretty cool.

http://ps3.ign.com/articles/937/937174p1.html

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

EA has confirmed that Mirror's Edge will see a follow-up, despite the publisher seeking to pare back its operations in the face of disappointing Christmas sales and the global economic instability.

"While we saw significant improvement in the overall quality of our key products this year, we are disappointed that our holiday slate is not meeting our sales expectations," said EA CEO John Riccitiello in an investor call picked up by gamesindustry.biz. "Given this performance and the uncertain economic environment, we are taking steps to reduce our cost structure and improve the profitability of our business."

However, despite slow sales the warm critical reception afforded to Mirror's Edge will ensure a sequel. "Many times with a new intellectual property, the first edition doesn't generate the units that subsequent editions could generate," Riccitiello continued, "Mirror's Edge is one that was very strongly reviewed, that one's going to go forward. We're probably going to look into some issues around the design to make sure strong IP is married with strong business."

This is just my opinion on this, but the first step is to get another main character. I'm sorry to say but Faith isn't a very good face or design for a franchise. I have many other thoughts on her design, but I'll just leave it there. I just think she's a horrible design.

I disagree with you entirely, Faiths design is excellent, and i seriously doubt that made any difference to most people buying it one way or the other, but as you said, that's your own personal preference. I have Mirrors Edge and find the only problem with it being it's not always obvious where to go despite runner vision, especially a pain when being fired at all over the place, kind of frustrating.

Not surprising, given that they already greenlit a Dead Space sequel despite it underperforming as well.

Im glad, Mirrors Edge was not only a fantastic game but a step forward for first person games in general. It is between this and Fallout for the best games I played all year, its really sad it didn't sell well.

I'm glad they're not going to kill off the franchise. I'm sure most people will agree there's some tremendous potential there, even if they didn't like the game.

So, where was the critical success of this game besides *chuckle* Play magazine?

Good. I would love to get a more complete game with the kinks worked out. The sequel better have a lot of the stuff I see that is DLC for the first game. Like about 100 of those.

I read this from PC Zone magazine was back, and it stands true if you think about Prince of Persia and Tomb Raider. "When a game wants to change it's franchize, they bring in: Boobs, big monsters, Rock music and slow motion depravity".

This means gone will be the pop music ambiance, in comes Slipknot. Gone is faiths black t-shirt and white lunes, in comes hot pants and a crop top with nipples poking through.

Well this is not really a risk since the game will be very popular by the time the sequel comes out and sequels are what publishers always count on.[QUOTE="TristanShand"]

I would probably skip on the sequel. I enjoyed the game a little bit, but not $60 worth. I would pick up the sequel for $30 though probably in a year after release or something. As for the sequel, I think Faith is out. The story is told and they will probably leave it at that or do a cameo but I think the sequel will follow other runners. Hopefully someone with some back story that makes a difference in the game.

I don't know why I didn't pick it up but something about it didn't appeal to me. I guess if I want a First Person game that isn't about shooting things it better have horror involved like Condemned or Call of Cthulhu, or be an RPG.

I thought making a platforming game in first person was a bad idea. Hell, i still occasionally have trouble getting off ladders in Valve games. Mirror's Edge really impressed me, though, between the ease of pulling off complex chains of maneuvers to the incredibly nuanced momentum mechanics. I'm glad they're not giving up on it. Let's just put more thought into the narrative next time.

Still, I can't imagine this ever being hugely popular. Shooters seem to be the biggest show in town, and here you are trying to market something that de-emphasizes gunplay. This is also the sort of game that isn't exactly friendly to beginners. Most of all, though, I don't think the average consumer understands what this game is about. I think the cinematic commercial did more to confuse. People would know it was not really in-game footage and assume, as one usually does with cinematics, that the commercial was not reflective of actual gameplay. Then they'd go to the store and see a box with a homely asian girl staring out at them and handful of screenshots that don't do the game justice..."wow, you mean i get to walk on balance beams!!" Even more difficult, it's not as if everyone who does understand this game has a positive opinion of it. Word of mouth just wasn't gonna work in EA's favor this time.

It's hard to appreciate what's really going on in the game unless you're playing it. The first person view really keeps you from actually witnessing much of anything that you're doing. It's mostly just the frantic motion of hands and feet, but as the person playing it, you at least have an image of what the total motion looks like. The sensations of Mirror's Edge have a difficult time reaching anyone not holding a game controller, making it somewhat difficult to market through commercials or trailers. It's just a difficult sell.

Ummm...the article mentions that EA considers it to be a commercial failure. How is it going to be "very popular" in another year or 2?

Well, if the game doesn't make enough sales in an early enough part of its lifespan, it's easy to assume that the sales won't ramp up after release, so if the sales rate isn't high enough off the bat, it could be called a commercial failure even this early on.

I've bought it, and it's enjoyable, but it's far from what I felt when I played the demo. The main mode has been actually turning south pretty quick for me, and time trail is so frustrating to deal with that it's hard to understand what the alternate routes are at times.

I haven't played it yet, but I hear a main complaint is that the gameplay went away from running away from guards and towards being forced to melee them. Many seem excited about that DLC pack, even those that didn't care for the main story itself.

I haven't bought it yet, but from what I hear it seems like follow things needs to be fixed.

1. Faith's face

2. More open level design to let players run

3. Better story.

4. Make the game longer.

5. Better combat design.

I don't get the whole thing about a character in an FPS game doesn't have the right look, the right face, etc. You rarely, if ever, see it. I mean, you'd never see Gordan Freeman even once if you didn't get the boxed HL games, for example. Third person games I can see, but first person?

The reason I bought the game was because of the demo and was not disappointed at all. It was just more of the demo spread out over 6 hours. The game is not designed with anyone who isn't a speed-runner at heart in mind. It was solely designed for people like me who can run the same thing 50 times over, patiently trying to shave a few seconds off the run. If they turn it into anything that isn't the parkour simulator, speed-running game that it is, I am going to be sorely disappointed. But who cares if they make more money that way, right?

It makes some difference because story is not told in first person perspective in Mirror's Edge. Gordon Freeman? You don't see him other than on the box, and he is nearly unimportant as character because he doesn't speak. Faith has personality and she is a character of her own, so her looks are actually important. Also, if you are going to make main character cool Asian chick, why not make her pretty? Doesn't cost extra to do that but it should help with advertisement.

I bought the game because of the demo, too, and yet I'm not nearly as impressed, perhaps because the part of the Demo that interested me moreso was the maneuvering and exploration, which feels more and more absent the more I go along in the game itself.

Thus far, based on my impressions of the production values and content, this game should not have been priced at 60 bucks. It's still very innovative, and I love the way the game looks and feels (mostly), but that's my feeling on the matter, and I suspect also why several people didn't buy the title.

No every female character in gaming should be like Tifa.... Well seriously, the thing I hated about Faith's design (part of it is because I'm Asian) was that it was too stereotypical Asian girl. Like all Asian needs to have chinky eyes and Asian girls can't be more traditionally Beautiful. As an Asian dude, I found it offensive. I'm not angry about it or anything because I can tell it wasn't their intention, but I can't really see it fondly.

I think the only aspect that makes her seem stereotypical is the tattoo work around her eyes making them appear more 'slanted.' Otherwise, I really don't see what's so horribly off about her design to make the game not purchase worthy on the basis of her design.

I guess it's difference in culture.

To just about most Asian population, Faith would not be considered pretty.

and Asian girls eyes are not THAT slanted. That eyes are way over the top slanted.

Not to mention the flatness of her face.

Dead Space and Mirrors Edge are both excellent I just hope that EA don't sell out Mirrors Edge and make it more urban (although tagging those pristine white rooftops would be pretty cool:P )

I still don't understand the obsession with ragging on about Faith when most of the game you don't even get to see her and the story is not the focus of the game at all. What I find hilarious about the article is that the DICE-designed Faith has breasts that more resemble a real woman while the "Asian taste" one, they are like the inflated balloons we see in mostly every Western-made game.

I think Faith's design is fine. If she had been a more likeable and connectable character I might have cared but DICE really missed the ball with the story and character design. If you haven't seen the concept art, I suggest looking it up, they really had some fantastic ideas going... then they just turned it upside down and pretty much ruined them.

The developers wanted to make a stylish and stylized character who fit with the game they were designing, they're weren't trying to say anything about how Asian woman do or should look. 'Faith will be as beautiful as an Asian woman can be!' was not a phrase uttered during any of the many interviews I read.

Also, as a great admirer of Asian woman (and black woman, and Latin woman and white woman....) I don't see any conflict between slanted eyes and beauty.

I haven't bought it yet, but from what I hear it seems like follow things needs to be fixed.

1. Faith's face

2. More open level design to let players run

3. Better story.

4. Make the game longer.

5. Better combat design.

Faith's face ? are you not a fan of the asian ethnicity ? so how would you fix her face ?

I would've bought the game if the lead character wasn't such an ugly Asian stereotype.

Full price for six hours, no way, it's a joke. Fallout3 and Fable2 sitting right next to it with hundreds of hours. Call of duty4 and Halo3 endless amount of gameplay online. Maybe they should have made a game before selling it.

People with guns trying to shoot you, you want to shoot back, and make it a hot chick for godsake, are the people who made this simple or something.

[QUOTE="TriangleHard"]I guess it's difference in culture.

To just about most Asian population, Faith would not be considered pretty.

and Asian girls eyes are not THAT slanted. That eyes are way over the top slanted.

Not to mention the flatness of her face.

Both designs are beautiful IMO, but while I think the redone is better facially, amplifying her boobs would just be kinda of distasteful IMO...Not every girl, especially one running around and jumping as much as Faith needs to have big boobs, it could be distracting...:P

I like the game, but I wouldn't recommend buying it. You can play it through in a few hours and renting should be enough.

How can I not be fan of Asian ethnicity when I'm Asian myself? Also someone already posted a link that shows how to fix Faith's face.

i just looked at that second pic of Faith and I hope that Mirror's Edge 2 is a game featuring that version of her only this time the game will be in 3rd person and the gameplay involves biking in a city full of cobblestone roads

That 2nd pic is fan-made, so your hope will never come true.
