In my opinion this genre was basicly a "one hit wonder". When EQ first came out people were amazed at this new engaging and imersive gameplay being able to play with people across the world etc. Then came SWG, DAOC, EQ2, CoH/CoV and WoW. But every other mmo that has come out after these has pretty much failed big time.

After hearing about how much people dislike AoC, and WAR on the horizon. I fear the worst for this genre... If WAR doesn't deliver what we want; what else is there? Sadly WoW will remain king again for a few more years who knows... This is why I have given up on mmo's. I think because of the such HIGH amount of content required to be put into these games with making them its hard for developers to come up with something really unique and great. SWG/EQ, EVE, and WoW were one of the few games that really delivered us a great experience, all the others pretty much tried to copy them sadly.

I'm not sure what you mean. MMOs seem as big as ever to me. WOW alone is bigger than most all those others you mentioned combined. Lord of the Rings is going strong, AoCis selling well.

If anything, they seem to be lacking the diversity they once had. All the big MMos these days are in a medieval setting.

I think too many MMOs are based in medieval, fantasy settings. They would have to be really different from each other to warrant a strong, stable fanbase. That is why I have high hopes for the warhammer 40k MMO because it is NOT another elf and orc game :)

Most of these games are based on the old Dungeons & Dragons formula. It works great for single player RPGs but was never meant for long term games like World of Warcraft. Because of that you end up with lots of grinding style quests (boring!) and is starting to get old. We need a new design formula.

Guild Wars is based on Magic: The Gathering and it turned out really well. Hopefully the MMO's coming up will try something new too.

AoC is awesome, just very buggy and unbalanced. Once they iron out the problems it will probably be the best MMORPG out there IMO.

WoW is one of the most played games in the world. AoC has hit over 1million copies sold. LotR online is still thriving. I wouldn't say the genre is dying, more thriving.

Those subscribers are what you call addicts. One's who are desperatley willing to play any mmo as long as its decent. Maybe I should of rephrased what I said and say MMORPG's are lacking quality more and more over time?

Actually with every MMO that comes out people expect it to be the "WoW killer" and when it doesn't appeal to people cause it cant topple WoW, hints why you don't see a lot of people saying good things about the majority of MMOs out there.

Personally theres a lot of MMOs that are coming out with good diversity of genres, like AoC that just came out a few weeks ago,WaR,Stargate worlds,Guild Wars 2, Huxley and those are just naming the ones I know of

I only play free MMORPGs. I would hate to pay $15 a month just to play a game. That to me is ridiculous...and feel like a loser with no life. :?

But make a game free, like Guild Wars, and I'm there.

Also, Tabula Rasa seems like the biggest recent MMO flops of all-time. Has anyone else seen this disaster coming? I did. I knew it wasn't going to be a hit.

Just because they don't have million of subscribers, doesn't necessarily mean they've failed. EVE does really well even with small amount of subscribers. No other developer makes as much free content as CCP does. LOTRO is very successful too, couple hundred thousand subscribers is quite enough. Not even Blizzard was expecting 10 million subscribers with a billion dollars coming in each year.

Actually, MMOs are bigger than ever. It's just that there's so many more games and virtual worlds out there now.

The thing that I was worried about was that all the MMos that are going to ocme out in the future are just going to be WoW clones. Because imo WoW was really not that great of an mmo compared to some of the classics, DAoC for one. After playing AoC though you can see some differances as they tried to be alot more mature than WoW. I havent played the pvp yet so I am still going to wait for my review till I play that though.

Warhammer though so far through beta looks like a game that might switch the balance though. The pvp is slightly differant, and there are some pve systems that are put in the game that makes it quite differant than other games that are out. I really believe though that if all the mmos that come out in the futre are just WoW clones then the genre will slowly start to die out. But that wont be for awhile imo.

This thread looks like a good opportunity to discuss that other "one hit wonder" genre, the First Person Shooter.

Erm, WoW just hit 11,000,000 subscribers. So if by dying off you mean becoming the most profitable genre in video game history, then yes they are dying off.

On top of that, AoC sold 1,000,000 copies in its first week. This market is very strong. Your logic, not so much.

They arent dying off. They are just being created less due to their prospective playerbases being gobbled up by the casual pandering WoW machine.

11,000,000 addicts. lol. for everyone who quits a new person subscribes. growth in subscriptions indicates...growth in use. how is the genre dying when its expanding??

i also love how there is always one clown who cries about subscriptions in threads like this. get real. its cheaper than buying a new game every 4 months. wth.

Whether that's true or not, I could care less. Traditional style RPGs are what I largely prefer anyway.

And with Bioware working on a MMO project, I think we can hope for some really innovative, new storytelling and questing in the genre.

Or you can expect the same boring dungeon design copied and pasted over and over and over, exploration involving finding rocks and scanning them, a really crappy inventory system, all that good stuff.

You could indeed, but people told me offline that I was too much of a pessimist and I should try to cheer up every now and then, so I am trying the rose coloured glasses, starie eyed approach :)

The sad thing is, those Mass Effect sidequests are about on par with any MMORPG quest.

Though I have no idea how it makes sense to play Simon Says in order to unlock lockers or recover artifacts or dig out minerals, or that you can unlock things by squirting gel on them.

i hate to burst your bubble, but Warhammer isn't the 40k one. it's just warhammer orks and humans. and DAoC implemented RvR gameplay better than anyof the other mmo's out there. large scale pvp is very good from mythic. I'm looking forward to Warhammer online.

There's a 40k MMO on the way as well though, he might have been refering to that one.

Also PC Gamer US had an interview with the devs about this game. I was referring to the 40k game. I am not really interested in the fantasy game because of too many similarities with WoW.

My problem with MMO's is kinda doing the same thing in leveling up for so long just to earn two hours of something different in one mission. I never really obbsessed over MMO's

I think MMO's will always have one game that's really popular for a long time. That's just the nature of the genre. It used to be Everquest and now it's WoW. Pretty soon the player's will get bored of WoW and move on the the next big MMO.
