Ok, so Im a long time Wii owner, and I finally caved in and bought a PS3, seen as there are no games for Wii! (except brawl!) Anyway, so i got COD4 as one does, and apart from the controls, which i cant seem to get used to after being a hardcore goldeneye fan, the game is good and has a decent offline multiplayer. But then i go to play online, and it just seems so impersonal. Every game is exactly the same, just a load of dudes on a massive map most of which are just camping with sniper rifles.

I just find it kinda boring, and part of it is because there are too many players and the maps are too big. I dont understand why there is no option for 1v1 split-screen matches online? I remember playing 1v1 or 4 player matches on goldeneye, and you would get these awesome stand offs, both hiding round a corner etc. I think the reason for this was partly due to the tight level designs, but mainly due to the fact that you could see the other players screen, and knew where everyone was on the map, so you would adjust your strategy to the information you had. I know there are plenty of idiots who say this is 'wall hack' or 'screen watching' or whatever, but I believe it added far more strategy and intimacy.

Also, all the characters on modern day online shooters are so generic its boring. Where have all the diverse characters gone? and Why are we all obsessed with realism in these games?

What do you mean massive map? Cod4's maps are tiny, most of all games on consoles have tiny tiny maps. BF2 for example on the other hand, has massive maps. And seeing each other screens =boring and lame. Lastly, CoD4 is about as far from realism as you can get rofl.

Ok 'massive map' is the wrong way to describe it, what i should probably have said is that its quite open in areas, which allows people to camp and snipe a lot of the time, and there isnt as many close encounter gun fights if ya know what i mean. TBH just forget i ever said that because its drawing away from the main points of the OP.

Also, i think the game is trying to be realistic, but you obviously dont and thats ok, but again its not really the main point.

Dude ur just nit pickin at tiny details and ignoring the main points

See, the thing about COD4 is that camping is impossible unless the other team is terrible. When some guy keeps sniping you, chuck a grenade in there, or shoot him with your M16!

But really though, you are complaining because that game isn't Goldeneye. Nobody wants that anymore. You also complain abouta lack of variety, but there are a ton of guns and maps and gametypes you probably didn't try. Go play search and destroy and then come and complain about no tense standoffs.

I play 1vs1 all the time on CoD4. If you had the 360 version we could set up a match. Also, I have to say the maps are actually pretty small. If you dislike big maps stay away from battlefield bad company.

Take this early time now to get yourself familiar with the game. Try and get good at it (if you enjoy it). Before you know it, people will be offering to have you join them in their games. The awesome part about making new friends online, is that you already share a common interest. It goes both ways though, if you come across somebody who you had fun playing with, dont be afraid to say something. "Hey man, you were awesome, we should do this again". You'll be surprised how eager some folks are. It really and truly makes a difference to go into your favorite game with a team full of friends you know and trust to play well.

Just like in real life though, there are a lot of people who are just anti-social or complete jerks. Most everybody else just wants to have a good time, like you. You can even use websites like this to search for like minded folks. I started and then later joined another gaming "clan" myself right here, in these very forums a few years back. Sometimes it takes a little work, but man is it worth it. I wish you had Xbox Live, id invite you to some games of mine for sure. If you ever get it, look for ShinZero. =)

I run and gun just fine in CoD4. Learn the maps and soon you will be knifing snipers in the back.

Also, screen peekers suck.

The game experience your looking for is gone. All your buddys coming over talking smack and passing the mic. (mic = mote, technically microphone, use to freestyle one day it just slipped out, we got attached to the statement) Why? Online console gaming and widescreen splitscreen sucks. I want one atop of the other not side by side or two boxes with black screen behind it! Screen watching dosen't take skill or strategy, its cheap. And thou Golden Eye was great (WHEN IT CAME OUT... I hated the midget) it didn't stand the test of time and isn't as refined as anything released since PS2/Xbox days. Its your mind reminiscing about "The good old days!"

As for COD4 like anything new to anyone it'll just take time to find your niche, guns; strategy; and so forth.______________________________ Opinion Time: Why characters are generic; its all about eveness (the midget in G.E. was smaller then every other character giving who used him an advantage... thats not opinion... hated him) And well all forces (police, military) ware the same uniform, think about it.______________________________________ Realism is what captivates you, all games strive for it. Its about real physics, life like graphics and sound, something closer to a simulator then a arcade game. (SOMEWHAT!!!) Developers wanna give you an experience as close to the real thing as possible (racing cars, shooting guns) and thats what majority of people want. Even non gamers will say that. Your like an old school guy who misses carburetors. Nothing wrong with that its just times are changing. Once again "Good old days"... P.S. This is a really good topic. Keep'em coming.

Thanks for the replies, I think i need to enjoy CoD4 for the the game it is, and stop comparing it to goldeneye. I suppose if I just practiced more, I wouldnt suck so hard, and then im sure i would enjoy myself. I do kinda wish id got a 360 now, i didnt realise left4dead was not on ps3, and that game looks awesome! Also that zombie thing on CoD WaW looks pretty sweet.

Oh yeah, one last thing. I keep changing the control setting from Default, to Southpaw and then to Legacy etc and i dont seem to be able to find the best, what does everyone else use? And what is prob the easiest for beginners?

No, I agree with you (even about the Playstation controllers, I've never been able to use them). Playing timesplitters 2 with 3 friends on one TV is infinitely better to playing online, and screen watching isn't cheating, it just means there are more encounters with the other players. Someone said "nobody wants Goldeneye any more", well that's just not true. I still play Goldeneye, and I'd still rather play Goldeneye multiplayer than just about anything online. Playing online just feels like I'm playing against bots who have the ability to yell abuse. That Temple level on Goldeneye is still the best multiplayer map in existence, IMO.

^ If people want realism they should play some old/older Tom Clancy PC games, not games with life regeneration, immortal team mates and a fast pace combat.

The online revolution started with Quake I and Diablo I, BTW console boys.

I suppose creating computer games is an artform, and as in any kind of art there is no definitive right or wrong answer. But all I know is I had hours of fun playing goldeneye multiplayer. Its like it has unlimited replay value, something which i think is extremely rare in computer games these days. I suppose people will just argue that CoD4 has unlimited replay value as well, but i just dont feel it. Maybe im getting too old or sumthin, but i know if they had made that remake of GE for Xbox live i would have been playin that for a long time
