Simple question really- Which do you think is that better fighting game series, Mortal Kombat or Street Fighter, and why?

Personally, I'm an MK man, and always have been. I'm a big fan of SF too. I've played bout of the series' since their early days (Street Fighter II, and the original Mortal Kombat), but I've always found MK more entertaining. It's got deeper characters, better storylines, and is a much bigger universe. Also The gameplay in MK has changed dramatically from generation to generatio, but it has never lost it's charm. The fact that MK is so much darker than SF makes me enjoy it even more, as it doesn't feel as cartoonish.

Mortal Kombat is a fun distraction, but there's nothing about it that wants to make me get good at it. Street Fighter, on the other hand, is all about learning the game. The reason MK has had to reinvent itself so many times is because when viewed as a fighting game, it doesn't stack up to Capcom, SNK or Aksys products. The characters are interesting, but I don't think they're any more interesting than those in the Street Fighter universe. Street Fighter is better because its about more than just gore and fatalities.

One of the main reasons I love Mortal Kombat is because it's not just all gore and fatalities. Sure they are a part of it, and a crucial part of it's style, but it's not the be all and end all of the game. There is a lot more to MK than blood and guts.

It's not? Search for posts about MK vs. DC Universe and see what the MK fanbase hated about it (hint: it's lack of gore and fatalities).

As I've stated, it is a crucial part of the games appearance, and one of the things that seperates MK from other fighters, but it's not the only thing about the game. It was lacking in MK Vs DCU, but that's to be expected in a crossover with superheroes. But the gameplay was still there regardless, and that's what matters.

I love them both, however MK has lost its charm with MK vs DC. They need to go back to build on Deadly Alliance but make the gameplay a bit more deep and balanced. I use to enjoy deception and DA but they began to regress with further releases, hopefully next gen whenever they decide we will get a good MK game.

I used to not like MK3. Prefered MKII, as most people do, but once you "get" how MK3 works it becomes leagues better than any addition to the series. So much so that, imo, it blows the snk games out of the water. MK3 is an extremely well balanced and deep game.

I prefer MK (up to MK 3, after that they lost it), but think Street Fighter is the superior fighting game.

MK is my thing. the special moves are easy to do and i like the combos. mk vs dcu is fun with the new gameplay they added for it. i am looking forward to the next MK when/if it releases.

It's supposed to be 2-D isn't it? A re-invention of the series?

MK is fun but the quality of the game went down after Deception. Street fighter is just awesome.

Unfortunately, no. Boon said that he refuses to go 2D because he believes that to make 2D MK game would feel like a step backwards.

That's funny, because a lot of Street Fighter fans feel like the new one is a step back because of the 3D

hmm... street fighter...

I am talking only about in the arcades tho, but there was something oddly heartwarming when walking into an arcade and hear the music from Street fighter 2s intro.

Such a catchy tune, and such a nice game, I like the character design, or rather I loved it, I did prefer super streetfighter 2...

I spend countless hours at arcades playing that game, alot of people were, noamtter who you were and how you looked, if you were one of the crowd around the SSf2 machines you were simply "one of the guys"

If it was not in an arcade I think I liked MK better, and I spent nearly as much time on MK2 as I did with SSF2, but the personality of street fighter was just... hard to explain really, I liked almost all of the caracter designs, I loved the stage music, and the areas art design. It was simply a place that sucked you in, took you out of the dreary rainy days, into a world with sunshine and a flurry of punches :P and honestly, who does not get a giddy smile on thier lips when they hear the yell of a special attack?

MK was just a bit less appealing to me I loved the scorpion and Baraka characters alot, and the game had alot of really cool characters, but it lacked the animated feel of SF, and it felt less lighthearted.

MK had one quality game - UMK3 - the rest without exception crumbled under the pressure tournament players applied to them. Meanwhile, time-tested Street Fighter has always been a competitive mainstay and never fails to get the technical attention that it needs, making it my pick by default.

Yea, I hear that. The days of old were great, SF II just had something about it that kept it fresh and it always had a sense of new things to discover. I remember spending countless hours trying to master Guile's handcuff bug exploit to piss off strangers. The arcade owner would get pissed at me as he had to reset the game all the time.

Ah, good times.

Street Fighter is the better series, but I still prefer Mortal Kombat's Asian mythology themes and overall storyline. I just wish future MK games have a better representation of martial arts.

Part of why MK doesn't have as much impact as before is most of us have been desensitized and gore doesn't make a game stand out anymore.

Apparently they're trying to change that desensitized thing in MK9. Apparently the fatalities are gross, so much so that Ed Boon has said he hopes this doesn't get an AO rating. We'll have to wait and see I suppose.. With that said, I've always been a bigger fan of Street Fighter, even if I may have forgot it during last generation of systems. Both games are nostalgia for me, though. I pretty much grew up playing SF2 and MK2. Both really great games.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and estimate that 100% of the people who start this thread (because let's face it, it's not nearly the first) prefer MK over SF.

Anyway, Mortal Kombat tends to be pretend, half-ass fighting games that are all about LOLs. Street Fighter (the good ones) are real fighting games that are worth playing and honing skills in. My opinions.

For me it's Street Fighter. I enjoy playing Mortal Kombat games for a bit when they first come out to check out the fatalities and what not but the mechanics of the games always feel a bit wonky to me and I end up losing interest in them fairly quickly.

I'm really not as big on fighting games as I used to be but I would go with mortal kombat. When I was a kid back in the 2-d days I used to play the mortal kombat games like crazy.Although I do like street fighter I think mortal kombat had simple yet deep game mechanics while street fighter is a more technical fighter but its simple at the same time also.

Still yet I played mortal kombat way more.

Tough choice. I love them both.

I guess I'd have to say Mortal Kombat. I just feel more of a connection to the characters, and I like the story a lot more.
