What are some of the most annoying enemies you've come across in games you've played? I'm talking about enemies who, for whatever reason, are either unreasonably cheap, or force you to do things that go against how you would otherwise play the game. Here's 2 of my most hated:

The flying fish from the Ninja Gaiden games: They just don't behave like, well, any other enemy in the game. They come at you in a swarm and kill you quickly unless you were already swinging your weapon before the first one grabbed a hold of you.

The tickers in the gears of war games: They make the game's whole idea of taking cover get thrown out the window. How much good is it to "take cover" when you've got suicide bombers just going around it or coming in from behind you and blowing themselves up without any regard for their own personal safety?

Oh yeah, I remember those damn purple birds from twilight princess. But Metroids? Come on, that's what the entire game series is NAMED after!

Bombs from almost any Final Fantasy. I hated them, always blowing up, killing someone in my party and ending the match right then so you skew my experience and someone has slightly less than everyone else.

Two words: Medusa Heads.

Even in the later Castlevania titles that you didn't have to worry about instant death, they proved to be a remarkable annoyance.

Any enemy that constantly respawns or swarms; like ElMikeO stated: the flood and I'll state those "birds" in Morrowind.

Headcrabs from Half Life.

Borrobots from the first Sonic the Hedgehog.

Zombie Dogs from the Resident Evil games.

Princess Kitana from Mortal Kombat 2.

[EDIT] Oh and the Blockheads from Okami.

Im going to second Medusa Heads as most annoying. They were really bad way back in the NES days but only because they would knock you into holes. Since the new games are more kind when it comes to instant death (it generally doesn't exist) they now petrify you. I was playing order of eccelesia on hard mode lvl 1 and certain parts you will get petrified, then get hit twice and thats the end of you. Even in normal mode you can lose a huge amount of health just by getting petrified over and over again.

I wouldn't consider infinitely respawning enemies to be a specific type of enemy, as it could be any enemy, just a poor game design decision.

I don't see why not. If the difficulty in defeating them is so high that it diminishes the enjoyment of the game, then yeah, they're an annoying enemy.

What if that enjoyment is restored by getting a kickass new character 10 minutes later :P?

I think the most annoying enemies are ones that use the exact same model of an enemy you were fighting 20 levels ago... only in a different color.
