I started playing Lord of the Rings : War in the North and there have been a few times now where ive had to protect an NPC from waves of enemies while they are unlocking a door or whatever .

What are the most annoying missions like this from any game you have played?

Resident Evil 4 by far, dear god. Escort missions in MMO:s in general, especially pre-burning crusade WoW.

She follows you as close as humanly possible and the only tough areas have a dumpster to throw her in.

Natalya from Goldeneye 64 was far worse... any of them in GTAIV or any other open world game... hell, Sheva in RE5 was more of an escort mission than RE4.

RE5 was a serious pain with sheva getting attacked every 2 minutes. Thankfully i played the entire game with a friend so i didnt experience it too bad

There was one in Spyro ripto's rage you have to escort some scientist guy through a sort of maze and there are these ogre things which he could easily avoid but he smoked some serious drugs before or something and now walks right by them.

The ones that exist.

I really can't recall a "protect the NPC" mission that didn't make me want to throw my system out the window.

Can we include protecting Kratos's wife and child from his murderous clones at the end of God of War? Because that bit nearly sours the whole game for me.

I say yes.

That part on Hard was one of the most infuriating gaming moments ever.

there's one near the end of god of war 3 that's just infuriating. i can't platform while you're f*cking screaming at me! :P santa monica likes to wear their team ico influences on their sleeve, but team ico knew that i would be more attached to yorda because she is a good character rather than her screeching at me the entire time (i seriously thought kratos might turn to stone). also, team ico never threatened yorda with a meat grinder.

Resident Evil 4, no question. But that's not the only one out there that's awful, most of them are.

I really like the way Bioshock:Infinite handles this, by telling you straight away that you don't have to worry about the escort because she can take care of herself.

Ah, I hated that! At point he walks in one direction like he's going one way, then TURNS AROUND and goes another way. Hated that mission.

I honestly hate all escort missions. But the most recent annoyance I could think of was in Devil Survivor. There are several of them in the game. The worst one was where the immortal demon Beldr shows up.

Knight's Contract was pretty much one huge, oh so very annoying protect the NPC mission. During a bossfight where the floor was filled with lava puddles, she would actually just stand in one and die immediately, making it practically impossible to actually beat the boss because you had to freaking babysit her permanently (which prevents you from fighting). Surprisingly enough, out of all the games I ended up selling in my life, Knights Contract is definitely the only one which I don't regret selling.

Protecting Ashley isn't difficult in the least though. 90% of the time she's directly behind you and out of the way, or hiding in a dumpster.

This isn't really protecting an NPC, but there is that one part in Bioshock Infinite that I found really lengthy and kind of tedious.
