Just asking around about games that have had you engrossed in the universe. For me, the games I have found to be the most immersive have been:

Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars

Machinarium

Beneath a Steel Sky

Syberia

I know they're all point-and-click adventure games, but I have always found them to be the best at getting you involved in the storyline.

KOTOR

I really got attached to my teammates and the game was able to get real deal emotional responses from me. The only response other games get out of my is a "hell yea" when I see a cool looking move or something.

We don't allow poll threads on gamespot. I'll leave this thread open if people do more than just list names of games in their posts. When responding to this thread please tell us why the game was immersive for you.

BioShock comes to mind. It starts off perfectly, too, with the plane crash. You survive and find your way to this odd underwater transport which kicks off your visit to Rapture. There are plenty of crazed people that just want to kill you, and you have no idea why. Piecing together the puzzle is great, with twists and everything, and I think the game is very immersive. I wanted to know why I was there and what happened to this place. It was a great experience.

mm yeah. Well the main purpose I was aiming for (and forgive me for not including it in the topic) was to have people explain why the games were so immersive for them. I'll start with saying that the four games I've listed above, save for probably Broken Sword, all have very "spartan" settings. You learn the story through documents, conversations, and anything but cut-scenes. I find that this helps in that there are no "checkpoints" in the game, instead a new puzzle or scenario atop a new one; more like real life where nothing is straightforward. With games such as these, I believe it's much easier to become immersed because the goals are not always apparent and encourage exploration to learn what is necessary. As for Broken Sword, it is much more linear, but it includes enough real history in the game to keep me enthralled. I found myself not playing these games for a quick thrill, but rather gradual understanding of a new universe.

Probably Counterstrike. Strategical thinking, listening for opponents, communicating to teammates, precise mouse movement, etc. The game requires your full attention if you want to win.

The MGS series is easily the most immersive I've played. The movie quality story, music and cutscenes made it so good.

Resident Evil 4 Wii Edtion and Assassin's Creed were the most immersive games I've played so far this gen.

I also played the demos of Metal Gear Solid 4 and Dead Space and they seem to be very immersive as well.

The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. No question. The music, the art style, the gameplay, the story. Everything about the game just sucked me in. I could spend eight straight hours playing without realizing twenty minutes had passed. Ah, the memories.

Bioshock was the first thing that comes to mind. The first time you enter Rapture was just breath taking.
